- Obvious Android Malware App Missed by Google Bouncer & Most Antivirus Products
I always love seeing Android phones packed to the gills with Antivirus software. The latest session to come out of DefCon goes to show that Antivirus on Android is not only a good idea but sadly it might not even help. Craig Young, a researcher at security firm Tripwire, showed off a pretty easy exploit at DefCon. He posted a proof of concept app in Google Play that steals an Android users Webtoken for their Google account. The app pretended to be a stock viewing app for Google Finance and was on Google Play with a description that clearly said it was malicious and should not be installed by users. When installed it would ask for permission to access a URL that starts with weblogin and includes finance.google.com. If you do then it will log you into Google Finance and everything would work like a charm but it would send your login token to an attack server to be used to login to EVERY OTHER GOOGLE SERVICE including Gmail, Calendar, etc.
The really scary part is that Google's Bouncer scanner that is supposed to find such malicious apps and block them totally missed this app. Better yet most antivirus and antimalware applications also missed what the app was doing except for one privacy advisor application. Alexandru Catalin Cosoi, the chief security strategist at antivirus vendor Bitdefender, said it best to PC World stating that:
"Today’s presentation showed that with enough ingenuity and effort you can easily bypass apparently well protected systems"
It took a month for the app to even be reported as malicious in Google Play… In other words even BlackBerry users should keep a close eye out on the apps they install and the permissions they give to the apps. This goes even more so on Android where users live in a warzone of malicious applications. Even though this vulnerability was reported to Google in February only parts of it has been fixed since. So far Google has stopped you from ripping out every single data there is about a user through Google Takeout but has not blocked it for Gmail or Google drive on Android.
Kudos to PC World for the report

Переслать - Dear BlackBerry… Please Let Us Hide Icons on BlackBerry 10… Pretty Please?
The BerryReview team has been having a blast digging into BlackBerry 10.2 this weekend. I am impressed that BlackBerry is getting back its flair for the small details and usability again. The thing that really disappointed me to discover is that we are still at square 1 when it comes to app management. BlackBerry has so far decided to not allow users to hide icons in the application drawer. This is something BlackBerry users have been able to do for years and was taken away in BlackBerry 10. I have asked a few friends at BlackBerry and they recommended I just put icons I want to hide in folders. This has led to me having a slew of hidden icon folders just to get the crap out of the way but sadly even that is limited to 12 or 16 hidden icons per folder.
So I have to ask our dear BlackBerry 10 OS developers. Can we please get you to see the light and banish this ridiculous restriction? You have to understand our desire to hide a redundant phone icon when there is a phone icon on every screen…
Pretty please?

Whomever at BlackBerry who is responsible for this change. Please take a bow… Then make this a BlackBerry 10.2 Cascades control that any developer can add on to. (If it isn’t already)

Переслать - Samsung Announces BBM Coming Soon to Google Play & Samsung App Store
In an interesting move Samsung has put out a press release that BBM will shortly be available for Samsung Galaxy devices in Africa. The app is confirmed to be "coming soon" to Google Play and Samsung's App Store. There is still no official date especially since we have until late September for them to hit their "end of Summer" deadline. Check out Samsung's announcement below:
Samsung to offer BBM in Samsung App store for all GALAXY Smartphone devices
5th August, 2013 – Today, Samsung has announced that the upcoming BBM™ app will be available in the Google Play and the Samsung App store soon and available to all Samsung GALAXY smartphone consumers across Africa.
Says George Ferreira, VP and COO of Samsung Electronics Africa: "At Samsung we are all about collaboration, innovation and driving consumer experience based on choice, value and customisation to suit every lifestyle. As such, bringing a top tier messaging service such as BBM is another way that we are expanding the catalogue of our messaging services and offering customers an amazing way to stay instantly connected with colleagues, friends and family."
BBM will form part of Samsung Messaging Hub as a complementary addition to the current slate of propriety and third party messaging services that Samsung customers enjoy – all aimed at empowering consumers to connect with each other in better ways using text messaging. Offering BBM on GALAXY smartphones in Africa will give Samsung customers access to the BBM social network, including BBM chats, multi-person chats and and BBM Groups, which allows BBM customers to create groups of up to 30 people, as well as the ability to share photos and voice notes.
"It is important to strike a balance between developing high-tech smartphones that carry brands in to the future and creating a sustainable ecosystem that primarily supports the needs of consumers that use these devices. Value added services are considered a prerequisite in the fast-paced, challenging environment that exists today and as a result, we will continue to drive innovation through our smart hub functionalities to ensure our consumers have the choice which they desire," concludes Ferreira.
"BBM provides one of the best and most robust mobile messaging experiences today. BBM has always set the standard for mobile instant messaging and we are thrilled to bring this experience to Samsung customers across Africa," said Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President BBM at BlackBerry. "BBM is loved by people who rely on fast, trusted messaging, along with the immediacy that our delivered and read statuses bring. Samsung customers will soon join the BBM nation in its love of the "D" and "R" notifications."
The companies have also agreed to joint marketing efforts to showcase BBM for Android to customers and to mobile users across Africa.
At launch, the app will be available for download from the Samsung and Google Play Stores, at no cost.
