- Canadian Minister States That They Are Keeping a Close Eye on BlackBerry
Canadian Government Industry Minister James Moore took some time to talk to Reuters yesterday about what he called BlackBerry's current situation. He stated that it was "unfortunate" that BlackBerrys new Q10 and Z10 phones have not taken off. He went on to say that:
"I know that they’re facing their challenges and they’re adjusting their firm internally in the way that best suits their interests," he said. "And all I can say is, we wish them well, and we’re keeping a close eye on the situation."
On top of that he was asked if the government wanted BlackBerry to stay Canadian in terms of foreign bids. To that he vaguely replied that:
"We want them to do well, keep employing Canadians, keeping putting out innovative technologies and platforms, and we’re paying close attention."
In other words they have their eye on it and have not made any public decisions yet.

Переслать - BBM for Android and iOS User Guides Leak Out!
If you needed any more proof that BlackBerry Messenger is coming soon to Android and iOS then this leak should reassure you. BBNews.pl spotted the user guides for both BBM for Android and iOS. They are hosted on BlackBerrys servers and link to the apps that are not yet available. Still it does show that you will be able to send messages, location, voice messages, status, BBM Groups, and more based on your BlackBerry ID, number, or QR code. This document also says that screen sharing, voice, and video will be coming later this fall which is really sad to hear.

Переслать - Foursquare updated to 10.2.1.674 for BlackBerry 10 Devices
Foursquare has always been very dedicated to BlackBerry users, and as of late it is really showing. They seem to be rolling out some good updates every couple of weeks. Today they update Foursquare for BlackBerry 10 to version 10.2.1.674. It brings some enhancements like an updated Business Details section that now shows hours, and payment methods, making it more informative. It also adds a few other minor but important changes like being able to set your profile picture within the app. Everyone should see the update in BlackBerry World within the next 24 hours.

Переслать - WSJ Wireless Savings Calculator Is A Great Way To Compare US Wireless Plans
A friend of mine pointed out a really cool mini-utility that the Wall Street Journal has released to help navigate the maze of current shared wireless plans. They have created a really simple wizard that lets you set your needs and then show you what it would cost on each carrier. Its a great way to compare the plans side by side for your actual situation.

Переслать - Mr Heins, Tear Down This (BlackBerry World) App Wall!
I was having a candid conversation with a friend yesterday about strategic moves that BlackBerry could make to quickly boost BlackBerry 10. One of the main themes that kept coming back was how badly the BlackBerry World team has failed the BlackBerry community. Just take yesterday's revelation that almost 50,000 apps in BlackBerry World are spam from one developer or the basic fundamentals still missing in BlackBerry World. I have advocated quite a few times that BlackBerry simply open up the door for OTA (Over The Air) application installation but sadly BlackBerry has arrogantly stuck to BlackBerry World.
This arrogance smacks right in the face of the very active "Sideloading" community for BlackBerry 10 and the many limitations BlackBerry imposes on them. There are even multiple commercial services dedicated to bypassing this user unfriendly restriction BlackBerry places on their devices that did not exist on legacy BBOS devices.
By opening up OTA application installation BlackBerry could boost their app availability by hundreds of thousands of apps. Many Android developers already publicly offer their APK files for installation. Others are easily accessible and would open the door for everyone to get Google Maps, Instagram, Candy Crush and MANY more such apps on their BlackBerry 10 devices. On top of that it would also allow for all the apps that BlackBerry has so far restricted due to asinine policies by not forcing BlackBerry to be part of the transaction. It would have even simplified the BlackBerry Maps bug that hammered BlackBerry support earlier this week.
BlackBerry continues to allow BlackBerry 10 to be held back by the embarrassment that is BlackBerry World. At first BlackBerry advocated that these limitations were imposed because developers asked for them and they would improve security and visibility for apps. So far BlackBerry World has failed on both fronts on top of limiting functionality for BlackBerry 10 and PlayBook users.
Its is way past the time for BlackBerry's CEO, Thorsten Heins, to either clean up shop at BlackBerry World or simply make life easier for BlackBerrys real customers. What do you think?
PS: This plan should be easy to implement for Android apps but BlackBerry would have to find a solution for Cascades apps where you can extract the source code from the BAR files.

Переслать - BlackBerry Maps 10.1.0.805 Bug Details Confirmed Along With Workaround
BlackBerry has finally gotten around to confirming the BlackBerry Maps 10.1.0.805 application startup crash bug in their knowledge base. Ironically they recommend the same workaround that we mentioned yesterday. They have also confirmed that the issue is only on BlackBerry 10 OS versions older than 10.1.0.4633. This just goes to show that BlackBerry has to get their $#i+ together and start pushing out OS updates much faster than the current rollout pace.
Check out the details below:
After upgrading to BlackBerry Maps 10.1.0.805 the application crashes when opened
- BlackBerry 10 OS

Переслать - BlackBerry's Certicom Encryption Patents Could Prove Quite Valuable
BlackBerry paid $106 million for Certicom back in 2009 in an interesting bid to expand BlackBerry's encryption security. BlackBerry has 130 encryption patents that include a near monopoly on elliptic curve cryptography. This encryption method is not as commonly used as the RSA and Diffie-Hellman but mathameticians claim those older methods may be rendered useless in less than 5 years. Currently only BlackBerry and the government use the elliptic curve cryptography, which is considered much more secure, due to the expensive license that BlackBerry demands for the standard.
Technology Review claims that this might actually end up being one of the more valuable BlackBerry assets and one that could possibly be sold off separately while allowing BlackBerry to keep a license. Currently only a few companies have licenses to this advanced technology so the right company, or maybe even BlackBerry, could extract a good amount of value from licensing them.
