Переслать - ONE App Developer Responsible for 47,000+ Apps in BlackBerry World?
Some of you may have noticed that a few developers have been exploiting the free submission of apps to BlackBerry World and using it as a promotional tool. @gpheheise pointed out to me that the worst offender by far is S4BB. As of this article BlackBerry World is reporting that S4BB has over 47,000+ Apps in BlackBerry World. The first 20-30 actually seem like good to decent quality legitimate apps and then it rapidly goes downhill. There are tons of city guides (Gdynia, Poland anyone?), audio books (is an audiobook an app?), phrasebooks, and more available for BB10 and many times also BBOS.
What really struck me is that these apps are actually borderline legitimate apps though they are really stretching the definition of an "app." They offer different content in a similar wrapper so they show up in BlackBerry World's search. Since they are actually legitimate apps I do not think that BlackBerry can keep them out of BlackBerry World but you would expect BlackBerry to discourage BlackBerry World flooding. I actually wonder how many of these 47,000 apps have ever been purchased or downloaded…
Either way having 47,000 apps definitely skews any BlackBerry World statistics. I am sure other App Stores have tons of spam and fart apps but I was not aware that BlackBerry World was similarly afflicted by a single developer. This just goes to show that BlackBerry should be focusing on the quality apps instead of the quantity of apps.
What do you think? How should BlackBerry handle this sort of BlackBerry World app flooding? Are they doing the right thing by letting them in and letting users decide if they should buy or ignore them?
PS: Is anyone else curious how long it took BlackBerry World's crack squad of reviewers to review these 47,000 apps from one vendor? Could that be why it takes so long for an app to be approved?

Переслать - Having Issues With the Latest BlackBerry Maps Update? Downgrade Now
We didn't mention the last update to BlackBerry Maps because it caused issues on my device. Since then I have found that version 10.1.0.805 that was supposed to fix defects and improve performance actually did the exact opposite for MANY people. Many users found that the app would crash immediately upon launching it. Dan let me know about a fix spotted by fbf2012 on CrackBerry to downgrade the version of BlackBerry Maps if you updated. BlackBerry has downgraded the version available in BlackBerry World to 10.1.0.790 and you can install it through your desktop browser.
Just go to the BlackBerry World Webstore. Login with your BlackBerry ID and search for BlackBerry Maps. Click the download link to download the downgrade to your device. Let us know if it works!
Kudos to fbf2012 and Dan on this one!

Переслать - BlackBerry Link for Windows Updated to v1.1.1.41
BlackBerry has pushed out a small update to BlackBerry Link for Windows. It is still unclear what exactly the update brings but my guess is improvements in the sync engine and backup functions. You can pick up the new update for yourself directly from BlackBerry.
Thanks Zooby for the tip!

Переслать - BlackBerry VP Marty Mallick Explains How BlackBerry is "Aggressively Recruiting" Apps
BlackBerry VP Marty Mallick is responsible for making sure 3rd party apps come to the BlackBerry 10 platform. He sat down with eWeek recently to explain "the holdup" and how "BlackBerry is aggressively recruiting apps." Its an interesting interview with Mallick coming off as defensive at first though it explains what BlackBerry is doing to alleviate the problem. I think this was the most telling part of the interview:
"So, to your question of whose end is the issue on, I’d say for the most part … it’s a business decision from those application providers, [regarding] when is the right time for them to support a new platform," BlackBerry is doing everything it can to encourage the vendors, including offering tech support, free tools and "opportunities related to their business," Mallick said. For each vendor, it customizes its pitch.
"We really look and say, ‘What are the motivators, what are the obstacles preventing you?’ In some cases, it’s marketing support. … In other cases, it’s maintenance," said Mallick. "To be clear, in cases where it’s warranted, we do offer funding, to help bring people to the platform."
Mallick also pointed out how eWeek's top 10 list of apps missing on BlackBerry 10 are all companies that BlackBerry has relationships with. BlackBerry has already presented them with a package expressing the opportunity and the support BlackBerry would give them.
Its a good interview to read over at eWeek. Let us know what more you think BlackBerry should be doing to accelerate app growth of high demand apps.

Переслать - eBay for BlackBerry 10 Updates to v2.3.0.25 – Remains an Android Port
I was really hoping eBay was working on a native app for BlackBerry 10 due to previous design leaks. Sadly that has not materialized but eBay has updated their Android port in BlackBerry World. This version has fewer bugs and seems to run much faster. Pick up eBay for BlackBerry 10 in BlackBerry World and let us know what you think!

Переслать - Free Metogol Soccer/Football Game for the BlackBerry Z10
This is one of those times where I am sad I have my Q10 more than my Z10. Pete pointed out Metegol, a slick new game spotted by James@CrackBerry which is free for the BlackBerry Z10. Metegol has you controlling a team of four Soccer/Football players as you control them to score on the other team. You have to avoid each opponent as they get close to your player with the ball. Altogether it is a pretty fun game and easy to pick up. If you like soccer/football games I highly recommend picking up Metegol for BlackBerry Z10 in BlackBerry World.

Переслать - Analyst Claims BlackBerry Has Scaled Back BlackBerry 10 Manufacturing by 10%
Jefferies Peter Misek is usually a BlackBerry bull but now he claims his checks show that BlackBerry has scaled back build order plans for BlackBerry 10. Supposedly they have scaled back by another 10% in August after being scaled back from 2 million to 1 million a month in July. Not the greatest predictions for BlackBerry but this could be due to Q5 filling up the channel together with previous Q10 and Z10 builds. Misek is still saying that BlackBerry is a Buy target due to aquisition/LBO offers. Either way always take analyst predictions with a huge grain of salt…

Переслать - BlackBerry Lays Off Another 100 Employees in Waterloo
News of another 100 laid off BlackBerry employees just hit Waterloo today. 570News is reporting that BlackBerry has confirmed another 100 layoffs on top of the previous 250. We are hearing that these are also in product testing areas so it could be BlackBerry is just outsourcing that. Either way BlackBerry had the following statement:
"as previously stated, we are in the second phase of our transformation plan. As such, this week's employee reductions, demonstrates another step forward to scale our company correctly for new opportunities in mobile computing. Our evolution as a company is ongoing and is in no way easy, but we are realistic about what is required to move our transformation forward in a timely manner. We will be as transparent as possible as our plans evolve."
