- BlackBerry CEO Says Axing BlackBerry 10 on PlayBook "Was a very tough decision to make"
There has been quite a bit of fanfare about BlackBerry breaking their promise of bringing BlackBerry 10 to the PlayBook. My buddy Kevin went to the Annual Shareholders Meeting and had a chance to talk to BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins about the issue and how much it has hurt BlackBerrys reputation. In short it confirms what we already assumed about BlackBerry 10 not being a good experience on the PlayBook even when pared down.
Here is what he told CrackBerry when pushed on the issue:
“That was a very tough decision to make. I could have done it, but you would have loads of comments on your site – ‘How can Thorsten allow such a crappy product to be launched?’ … It was one of the toughest decisions I had to make because I knew I would break a commitment, but I also made a commitment to quality before that. … I can’t take the hardware back and provide them with 2 GB hardware. I can’t exchange the part – there’s no way to do this… I stand by the decision, as tough as it is. I apologize to the users that I couldn’t get it done. What I did I did because I want them to have a quality experience with BlackBerry 10.”
Sadly BlackBerry did not plan for this scenario with a conciliation of any sort or damage control messaging. Thankfully they are considering some sort of loyalty reward for PlayBook owners. Its just a wonder that they had such a disastrous announcement of this letdown for PlayBook owners.

Переслать - More Confirmation of BlackBerry A10 Coming This Year and Pictures of BlackBerry 9720
We have been hearing quite a few rumors about a 5" BlackBerry Aristo device called the BlackBerry A10. This device is set to be the king of the BlackBerry 10 pile and rumored to launch this year. Now the BGR has confirmed that rumor by stating that the A10 is scheduled for later this year. Its also set to have a SuperAMOLED screen instead of the AMOLED screen on the Q10. The device is targeted at gaming and will supposedly pack 2GB of RAM and a dual core processor. They also speculated that the processor and GPU will be separate like the iPhone in a device the size of the Samsung Galaxy S4 but with more rounded edges than the Z10.
They also scored some more comparison pictures of the BlackBerry 9720 rehash. I am still not sure what the purpose is of this device but it seems to be more targeted internationally…

We have been playing with Local Search with Yelp for the last few days and it seems pretty decent. Hopefully Yelp will get their act together soon and release a proper BlackBerry 10 app but until then Local Search with Yelp uses their API to bring us similar data. Search is limited to just a few countries including the US, UK, and Canada but more are hopefully coming.

BlackBerry Charts New Course by Officially Adopting Its Iconic Brand Name
Announces Election Results for the Company’s Board of Directors
WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwired – July 10, 2013) – BlackBerry(R) (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSX:BB) announced today that the Company’s shareholders have approved a special resolution to change the Company’s name from Research In Motion Limited to BlackBerry Limited at the Company’s annual and special meeting of shareholders held on July 9, 2013 (the "Meeting"). Articles of Amendment have been filed to effect the change immediately.
The Company first announced that it would adopt the name of its revolutionary BlackBerry smartphone on January 30, 2013. The move consolidates the Company’s brand into a single cohesive global presence. The Company has been trading as "BBRY" on the NASDAQ Stock Market and "BB" on the Toronto Stock Exchange since February 4, 2013.

It seems like there is some drama playing out at Waterloo. BlackBerry confirmed to the WSJ that they have fired the VP of US Sales Richard Piasentin last month. Supposedly BlackBerry is also planning on cutting quite a few middle management jobs on top of the previous cuts last year. They do not know what those numbers will be but it is intended to lighten the costs of the company to manage cash flow.
