- Beta Zone Rolling Out BlackBerry 10 Client for OTA Downloads
It seems like someone in the BlackBerry Beta Zone team finally realized how convoluted the sideloading business was for end users. BlackBerry is currently sending out invites for a new Beta Zone for BlackBerry 10 app in the Beta Zone. Very meta of them. Once you get the invite you can sign up to get the Beta Zone app that allows you to download other Beta Zone apps directly to the device. That way you do not need a PC.
I am still not sure why BlackBerry cannot just put these apps in a Beta Zone section of BlackBerry World but I guess we cannot ask for that much usability. Until then head on over to the Beta Zone to see if you get the invite. Make sure your profile is updated with a BlackBerry 10 device to ensure you get the offer.
Check it out at www.blackberry.com/beta
Thanks Dan for sending this in and Bla1ze@CrackBerry for confirming it with the screenshot

Переслать - BBM Coming to Android By End Of September According to BlackBerry India MD
We have been hearing about an "End of Summer" release for BBM for Android and iOS in the official announcement from BlackBerry. I have personally been hearing that September is a done deal and now BlackBerry's India MD, Sunil Lalvani, has confirmed as much. He confirmed to IBNLive that:
“The service is coming to Android this summer. But summer as per North America, where it remains till September.” When asked if that means that BBM for Android would be available before the end of September, his response was in the affirmative.
Hopefully that pans out for all the iOS and Android users waiting to get back in on the BBM craze.

Переслать - Best BlackBerry 10 Error Message So Far… Have a Better One?
BlackBerry 10 seems to have a much better error message handling system than legacy BlackBerry devices. Gone are the days of Java Error 503 and other such fun and more user friendly than Androids "Unfortunately System UI has stopped" or "Force Close" errors. Still there are some error messages that users have been exposed to here and there. This one shown above is my favorite so far but I thought I would throw the challenge out there. What is your favorite BlackBerry 10 error message?
PS: I love that an application can be slayed. Brings me back to Final Fantasy days.

Переслать - Awesome Thomson Reuters Eikon Financial app for BlackBerry 10 (Native)
BlackBerry just had another hard hitting financial business app release for BlackBerry 10. Thomson Reuters has released their Thompson Reuters Eikon app for BlackBerry 10. This gives Eikon subscribers (an alternative to Bloomberg terminals) access to real time financial markets data on their BlackBerry 10 device. Best of all it comes in a fast and fluid native UI experience. BlackBerry announced this partnership at BlackBerry Live and the fruits of that labor are finally here.
If you are a Thompson Reuters Eikon user check out their free app in BlackBerry World. Kudos to Bla1ze@CrackBerry for spotting it.

Переслать - BlackBerry Rumored to Cut Z10 & Q10 Production in Half
There are quite a few rumors swirling around when it comes to BlackBerry 10 production. In the US we have seen carriers cut the price of the Q10 and Z10 aggressively to sub $99 price points with Amazon taking the cake at about $49 for the Z10. Now Stuart Jeffrey of Nomura Equity Research (you know how I love ANALysts) has put out a note the company is cutting back production.
Supposedly BlackBerry has scaled back production of the Z10 and Q10 models to 1 million a month from 2 million previously. This is after they just raised it to 2 million in May. BlackBerry has responded that "such things are part of normal lifecycle management of preparing for new devices that will be coming out." Who knows what is actually true but this pricing does make BlackBerry 10 devices more competitive.
Either way it translates into cheaper BlackBerry 10 devices for now. Check out the full analysts report at Barrons.

Переслать - 35+ Free Cascades & WebWorks Online Training Courses Available for BlackBerry 10 Devs
Jesse pointed out this great offering for aspiring BlackBerry 10 devs from BlackBerry. BlackBerry has posted up 35+ interactive training courses for BlackBerry 10 Cascades and WebWorks concepts. They walk you through a session in 15-30 minutes with exercises you can download and play with yourself. You can even take the quiz afterwards to test your retention. These courses are also useful if you are studying for BlackBerrys new Certified Builder exam for developers.
Right now I count 35 training items with more listed as coming soon. They also plan on releasing more when the BlackBerry 10.2 Gold SDK release along with updating the current ones.

Переслать - T-Mobile & AT&T Unveil Plans for Frequent Upgrades but It Will Cost You
Earlier this month T-Mobile unveiled a new plan called Jump that tries to make it easier for you to upgrade phones as early as every two months for a hefty $10/month extra. The math there only really adds up if you were already paying for insurance and were planning on upgrading very close to every 6 months and don't like reselling your electronics. Now AT&T has joined the fray with a similar program that has you paying for the whole device in payments (without subsidies) broken out over 20 months without any down payment. They will then let you upgrade to a new device after 12 months if you hand in your old device. Once again the math does not really add up unless you don't like to resell your device.
If you are thinking about both plans I recommend doing the math and figuring out if it actually makes sense. First of all you are forgoing subsidies though this may make upgrades a bit more affordable for people who cannot make a down payment. The Verge has a nice analysis of the T-Mobile Jump plan. At least that plan includes insurance built in.

Переслать - PlayOn Goes Native on BlackBerry 10 Streaming Netflix, Hulu, & More from your PC
PlayOn has an innovative way of bringing content like Hulu, Netflix, HBO Go, and more to a platform. It uses your PC to stream the content which it then forwards on to your device. They have now launched a native BlackBerry 10 client and I am loving it. Best of all you do not need a Hulu Plus subscription because it is going through your PC. They also have support for CBS and 6 more online channels in the US and Canada.
I highly recommend checking out PlayOn in BlackBerry World if you enjoy streaming content. The price for PlayOn is a tad steep at $49.99 for life or $24.99 per year though they do have a 30 day trial.
Here is the announcement:
PlayOn Brings Netflix, Hulu, HBO GO, 60+ Channels to BlackBerry 10 Platform
PlayOn app now available on BlackBerry World
Seattle, WA – July 16, 2013 – PlayOn, the award-winning media server software from MediaMall Technologies that streams online videos to TVs and mobile devices, today announced the launch of the PlayOn app for the BlackBerry® 10 platform.
For the first time, BlackBerry 10 customers in the US and Canada can watch content from Hulu, Netflix and HBO GO on their smartphone. By downloading the new PlayOn app to a BlackBerry® Z10 or BlackBerry® Q10 smartphone, and PlayOn software to a Windows PC, customers can stream online content from Netflix, Hulu (with no Hulu Plus subscription needed), HBO GO, CBS and 60 additional online channels to their smartphone.
PlayOn's online software is installed on a Windows PC where it browses content from various online providers like Netflix and Hulu and online channels like ABC, NBC, CBS and Comedy Central, and then displays that content directly on the BlackBerry 10 smartphone through the PlayOn app. BlackBerry 10 smartphone customers can browse and watch movies, TV shows and more on their phone at home or on the go over a Wi-Fi®, 4G or 3G connection.
"With our new PlayOn app for BlackBerry, we are excited to extend PlayOn's benefits to BlackBerry 10 smartphone customers, including first-time access to all the great content of Netflix, Hulu, CBS and HBO GO," said Jeff Lawrence, CEO of MediaMall Technologies. "We are very pleased to be partnering with BlackBerry to launch this app. It is really going to change how BlackBerry 10 customers watch content on their smartphone."
"We're delighted that PlayOn is now available for BlackBerry 10 smartphone customers, giving them access to the fantastic streaming video content they can get today on their Windows PC," said Martyn Mallick, VP of Global Alliances and Business Development at BlackBerry.
BlackBerry 10 smartphone customers can try PlayOn risk-free with the software's 30-day money back guarantee through a Windows PC in the United States and Canada. A lifetime subscription to PlayOn is currently on sale for $49.99. Annual subscriptions are on sale for $24.99. The PlayOn app is a free download and is now available on the BlackBerry® World™ storefront.

Переслать - BlackBerry Confirms That Silent Camera Shutter Is Coming in OS 10.2
I have no idea why this has taken BlackBerry so long but they finally seem to be listening to customers. For years BlackBerry has been smugly telling users that they cannot silence the shutter sound on their phones due to some ambiguous legal reason even in locations where it is totally legal. BlackBerry even pulled such apps from BlackBerry World before allowing them once again.
Now Michael Clewley, product manager at BlackBerry, has confirmed on his BBM Channel that there is hope at the end of the tunnel. You will now be able to take pictures at weddings without everybody looking at you weirdly with OS 10.2. BlackBerry is allowing your phone profile to control the shutter sound so you can turn off the sound.
Finally…!

Переслать - BlackBerry A10 Rumored Specs Detailed in Leaked Slide
We have been hearing quite a bit about the rumored BlackBerry A10 (Codename Aristo) and the fun just doesn't stop. Now we have what looks like a leaked slide from May 2013 posted by a newbie on CrackBerry forums for the A-Series device specs. The specs are disheartening for some that were expecting flagship hardware but they do improve on the Z10. Still I hope this is a dated slide deck and BlackBerry has updated the internals. We know they have multiple prototypes going around so it should be interesting to see how the device finally launches.
The main feature that concerns me is the non-removable battery. That is just a stupid move in a BlackBerry device or any device for that matter. It takes away user flexibility for very little added benefit.
