- A Close And Personal Look at Blaq, The Twitter App for BlackBerry 10
I remember my first introduction to Twitter. It goes way back, I challenge you to remember and share yours. My very first introduction was because of a contest with BlackBerry Cool, a Twitter contest. That’s how I joined Twitter and a new portal opened up for me, a whole new world of information. I’ve seen a lot of third party apps come through: TweetGenius, SocialScope, and others to name a few. But the one app that has caught my eye and kept my interest is Blaq, and I want to introduce you to Blaq and all the features it has to offer.
Jerome Carty is the developer behind Blaq as we know it today. He’s been working on this app since 2011. Blaq has come a long ways since it first began. I would say the most recent version of app didn’t come to be until the BlackBerry PlayBook. Back then, beta testing required a side loading technique. One that used cmd prompts. It was quite the app. At the time I had found BlackBird but quickly came to realize that Blaq was a serious and evolving application fueled by the creativity and intense devotion of the developer. Since then, Blaq has been my sole third party Twitter app.
Blaq is now of course and has been available for the BlackBerry 10 and you can find and purchase it in BlackBerry World. For only $2.99, Blaq can bring you the following features, but before reading these features, please take note that I’m going to take you through Blaq step by step so you can see all the features available including ease of use.
- Beautiful, intuitive NATIVE user interface
- Fast scrolling – no need to wait
- Interactive gesture engine for quick actions to keep you moving
- REAL-TIME Twitter streaming support
- Power-conscious – When minimized, Blaq goes into low-power mode to save battery
- The most advanced muting system – mute tweets based on multiple criteria
- Sharing – Share tweets from Twitter to just about any app to Blaq and vice versa!
- Active Frame – Know when you get new tweets, mentions or direct messages
- BBM™ integration – share tweets updates with your BBM™ contacts
- Native or editable retweet support (hold down on RT icon in detail screen)
- In-app notifications
- Twitter Username auto-completion
- Full user profile view
- Image previews within Blaq
- View your lists curated from Twitter.com
- Multi-account support
- Search people and tweets
- Photo posting – Twitter
- Q10 support
So here we go. Once you purchase and set up Blaq, you have a brief tutorial as to how to use the app. I say brief because no matter how long you’ve had the application, there’s always something new to find, or a feature that you overlooked that you didn’t realize did more. Blaq has a darker background which makes it easier to see when you’re reading fonts or posting, at least for me. You have at the top Settings on your right which has the Font Size which you can customize, When to pull when inactive (how often) composing and send, and help. Help brings up the tutorial you had upon install. Blaq also connects with BBM so when you compose a tweet, it asks if you want to post it as your status which you can accept or decline.
In Accounts on the top left when you gesture down you will find a place to put in your Twitter accounts, and yes, Blaq can handle more than one. If you swipe back up, you can see your timeline. The text is in white, the tags in blue, Twitter names in green, and hyperlinks in blue.
If you place your finger on a tweet and move to the left with your finger you will see a shortcut bar come out on the right. This short cut allows you to quickly reply, retweet, favoritize, or share, translate or cancel as tweet options. Translate is a newer feature of Blaq that works quite nicely.
If you move to the right, the main menu of Blaq appears. This is Mute, Search, Profile, Favoritize, lists, retweets, direct messages, replys, timeline and compose. When you compose, you can also add pictures. If you reply, you have the option of reply, retweeting with regular, quote the tweet, classic retweet, retweet via, or cancel. Choosing options leads to share, Translate, and cancel. If you click on any tweet you”ll open up the tweet with the panel of choices at the bottom right you can see the three dots menu symbol. Click on that and you’ll open up Copy Tweet, Share Tweet, and Retweet Options.
The translate option works great. In Search you can find Worldwide Trends, change Trend Location, In Lists, you can view Private, Public, and Subscribed, with the option to Add List.
Personally I love all the hidden shortcuts in the app. I can tweet in all sorts of ways, and tweet the way I want. I also love the Translate feature and the ability to I can customize my Twitter my way, and also I can switch between accounts freely.
The one thing I really love about Blaq is how it reminds me of DNA. Blaq has been original, there’s no app like it that came before Blaq, it’s an original work of art. Because Jerome is so persistent and devoted, he is constantly at work. He’s very dedicated and when he’s working on Blaq, there’s no stopping him. Blaq is always evolving, always changing, and he listens to what everyone has to say. Feedback is important to him. I know that Blaq is a top premium app and does so much for being a Twitter app. Customer service is top notch, a great group to help answer questions, and a devoted developer. The latest update was June 17th. Blaq is also supported by Bellshare GmbH’s BeBuzz Pro for BlackBerry 10. What else more could you want?
If you have Blaq, please take a few to really look into the features I’ve gone over if you haven’t yet. If you haven’t tried Blaq, then you need to find out what you’ve been missing out on. You won’t be disappointed. Let us know if you have Blaq or just checking it out. This is the way I look at it. You have a BlackBerry 10 device because you wanted a tool not a toy. You believe in keep moving. With Blaq on a BlackBerry 10 device, it really leverages that power in the palm of your hand. Tweet the way you want and when you want, the way it was meant to be tweeted. The only thing we are left waiting for is hub integration, but we’re hoping it won’t take too long.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10.1 MR Lets You Gesture Between Messages & More
I have been begging BlackBerry to add more swipe gestures in the BlackBerry Hub and it seems like they are listening. Michael Clewley just revealed a much needed yet unintuitive (until you know it) gesture to swipe between messages in the BlackBerry 10 hub in the latest OS 10.1 Maintenance Release (and many leaks). You simply swipe back like the peek gesture and then continue it up or down to swipe to the previous or next message. Its still slow and has too much animation for my taste but its better than nothing! Hopefully they speed it up.
BlackBerry also added the the ability to hit the "U" key on BlackBerry Q10 and Q5 devices to go to the next unread message. Now I just need a quick shortcut to only show unread messages in a custom search. Here is to hoping we get many many more of these refinements!

Переслать - Carriers Start Rolling Out BlackBerry OS 10.1.0.4537 Maintenance Release
BlackBerry just announced that starting today they have begun the rollout for the BlackBerry 10.1 Maintenance Release. This brings us to v10.1.0.4537 which is starting to roll out in Asia Pacific, Canada, and EMEA starting today and continuing into Latin America in mid August on most carriers. Sadly the US is STARTING to get it by the end of the summer. In other words Verizon is going to get it sometime in 2015 so hopefully the leaks continue.
Either way the update is a nice one with the following high level improvements:
BlackBerry Hub
New enhancements designed help you stay organized and in control of all your conversations:• Quickly move between messages – Use a simple gesture to quickly move to the last or next message without having to return to the message list
• Jump to the last unread message – If you have a BlackBerry Q10 Pressing the 'u' key in the BlackBerry Hub will take you to the last unread message
• Email synchronization – ActiveSync and IMAP email users can adjust syncing preferences to keep emails on their BlackBerry smartphone for an unlimited time period
BlackBerry World
Search improvements help you find the apps, games and multimedia content you're looking for. When you find that app – our new wish list feature helps you keep track of apps you want to download. Plus, this software update will automatically update your favorite apps like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to the most recent versions.BlackBerry Balance
Manage work and personal conversations by letting you split out your work and personal accounts in to different views within the BlackBerry Hub.**Check out the announcement here. BlackBerry is getting some serious egg on their face with these staggered global rollouts. Verizon FINALLY updated their users to a stable OS this Friday and already they are behind the ball. They really need to find a way to roll out OS updates globally within a reasonable timeframe especially when the OS update is mostly bug fixes and small improvements. (three to six months is not reasonable)

Переслать - BlackBerry Confirms Issue With Random Accounts Dissapearing From BlackBerry 10 Hub
Since BlackBerry 10 launched we have been hearing random reports from users about a bug that seems to have a mind of its own. For some reason certain accounts setup on your BlackBerry 10 device will all of a sudden decide to stop showing up in the hub. Usually a soft or hard reset will fix it but it seems to be related to some buggy logic in the Settings->Hub Management menu. You will sometimes find that the toggle for certain accounts was set to Hide when you scroll up and down that list.
Either way it is nice to see that BlackBerry has finally owned up to the issue in the Knowledge Base. They appropriately titled the issue "Messages from random accounts will randomly stop appearing in the BlackBerry Hub." Quite a bit of randomness…
They are still recommending a soft or hard reset to fix the issue but also check under Settings->Hub Management. Personally I find the issue has not cropped up in the latest leaked OS which will be released in the near future as a BlackBerry OS 10.1 Maintenance Release.

Переслать - BeMaps Recreates Google Maps on BlackBerry 10 Natively Using Google API's
Bellshare let us know that they released BeMaps today which is a nice execution of the Google Maps API natively on BlackBerry 10. It gives you access to maps from the popular Google Maps API along with GPS location though sadly no navigation. It can follow you though on the map which is nice to see. My favorite part is that you can show the layers on the map like satellite, public transportation (yeah!), traffic, and bike lanes. They have also given us access to POI information along with search and category breakdowns. In short this is the closest you are going to get to Google Maps without sideloading the Android app or Google releasing an official app.
Features include:
- Lock the map to your GPS position to automatically follow you
- ‘My location’ indicator with compass heading indicator will always show you where you are
- Search for addresses, places and locations worldwide using the powerful Google Maps based search
- Shortcuts for searching for restaurants, coffee, bars, grocery stores, hotels, gast stations, post offices, pharmacies, malls and ATMs nearby
- Show additional layers on map like satellite, public transit, traffic and bike lanes
- Tap on hold to drop a pin anywhere on the map to learn more and use it as a starting point for street view and directions
- Tap a point of interest (POI) icon to learn more about the place or business
- Detailed information about thousands of places wordwide, including descriptions, phone numbers, website and reviews from other Google users
- Get car, public transit, walking or bike directions between any two locations
- Get stunning, 360-degree Street View panoramas to help you find your way in many locations of the world
- Zoom in and out of the map with the zoom buttons, pinch-to-zoom or a one finger gesture (tap, tap-and-hold, then slide up/down)
- Optional full screen mode gives you more screen real estate on QWERTY devices
BeMaps is now available for $3.99 on BlackBerry World. The app is native and available for the Z10, Q10, and Q5 at launch. Hopefully a free trial comes soon!

Переслать - Leaked OS 10.2.0.810 for the BlackBerry Z10 (Except STL100-1)
The BlackBerry Z10 just got one of its first relatively usable OS 10.2 beta leaks in the form of OS 10.2.0.820. This new leak is available for the BlackBerry Z10 STL100-2/3/4 models except for the STL100-1. This is definitely not as clear cut as the OS 10.1 leaks and has quite a few caveats which I highly recommend reading and considering before downloading. Adam Szucs did a good job of writing up the FAQ with the release on CrackBerry forums and I highly recommend reading it all. In short it does have Jelly Bean, notifications work, phone calls work, restores are iffy, battery usage is high, and it may lock up sometimes. On the other hand a few on the BR team have been running it successfully this weekend so its not an unusable release.
Check out the download here and proceed at your own RISK!

Переслать - Keep Your Passwords And Personal Data Safe With PassCrypt
If anyone has ever read any of my writing, you’d know that I really place a lot of importance in security and that’s another reason I value my BlackBerry so much. Any software that becomes available that enhances that security is even more appealing to me. This caught my eye and I know that there are others out there who feel the same. Check out PassCrypt by SCrApps in BlackBerry World.
So what is PassCrypt? Here’s the excerpt from BlackBerry World:
PassCrypt is more than just a password keeper; PassCrypt is a data encrypter.
PassCrypt is free to use for up to 4 entries; with a single in-app purchase, you can save as many entries as you want and remove ads forever.Features included are:
- Save unlimited Passwords/Data (up to 5mb (theoretical limit)) of encrypted text – that’s a lot. (Free Version, save up to 4).
- No advertising in Pro version.
- Unbeatable security.
- Real-time encryption updates while typing.
- Backup Encrypted Data to Device Memory.
- Restore backed up data.
- 6 included categories: Online, Other, Credit, Banks, Personal, and Text (notes).
- Save backed up data to Remember/Evernote, send via email, or other installed apps.
- Available for BlackBerry Z10, Q10, and Q5.
- BlackBerry Peek and Flow.
- Native.
- Intuitive UI.
- Unparalleled developer support.
I’ve included the instructions then I’m going to give my view of using it and setting it up.
Here are the directions from the developer:
- Any data saved the app is encrypted with AES 256 bit encryption. AES 256 bit encryption has never been cracked. With current technology, it is estimated that the time to brute force an AES 256 bit encryption is 3.31×10^56 years (that’s longer than scientists estimate the universe has existed).
- When you close the app, your Passphrase is deleted from memory and
- For convenience, the encrypted can be exported. Remember, AES 256 bit encryption.
- When you minimize the app, you must enter your Passphrase again.
- Restoring a backup restores the hash of your Passphrase (remember, hashes are unencryptable), preventing anyone from accessing the app without your Passphrase after a restore.
Note: Please make it a passphase only you will remember and make it one you can’t forget because if you forget it, the developer won’t be able to help, because they do not keep records of this. Big key to remember and the most important of it all.
I downloaded and installed PassCrypt. I really like how the app opens and allows you to set your passphrase. After creating it, you can click the + tab to add new data to encrypt. It allows you to name it and categorize it. Super easy. The other tab allows you to decrypt your data as well.
When you close out of PassCrypt and open it back up, it will prompt you to enter your passphrase. No passphrase, no entry.
I’m really impressed with this five star app. I never used Password Keeper before but with PassCrypt, I’m glad I waited for just the right app to come along. Now the ads are in the free version, however the Pro version with no ads is an in app purchase and is only $1.99. It also allows you to store more passwords than just four.
If you place as much importance on data as I do, then you really need to check out PassCrypt. Let us know what you think!

Переслать - Virtual Sticky Notes With StickyBoard Notes For BlackBerry 10
I know at work and every job I’ve ever worked, sticky notes have been a necessary evil. In studying I used them color coded for subjects or points to consider. Now with BlackBerry 10 you can still have your Sticky Notes and be green at the same time thanks to Joey Beechey Apps StickyBoard Notes for BlackBerry 10.
I’ve been using it for a while and it’s great for quick notes, phone numbers, things to keep in mind like to do lists and count down lists and all for only $1.99. The app is extremely easy to use and is just like having a sticky note pad. Each note you make takes a different color. I like that it still holds the info when you close the app as well. What I would really love to see is integration with BBM so you could share notes back and forth, and perhaps sharing in general. But for $1.99 it’s a great app so you can put down the pen and forget about taking notes on your palm or keeping different colors of sticky notes in your locker, briefcase, backpack, or purse. Grab a copy of StickyBoard Notes for yourself and find out how easy it is and stop working so hard so you can work smarter.
You can purchase StickyBoard Notes for BlackBerry 10 for $1.99 here

Переслать - Check Out Plagiarism Checker by Plagiarisma.Net For BlackBerry 10
If you’ve ever had to turn in an essay or paper or write an article, then you should be familiar with Turnitin.com. Turnitin allows a student, professor, writer and or blogger to check a paper before submitting to find any parts of plagiarism. It’s a great tool to help you keep original and keep your words as your own, being careful not to borrew other words from other sources. Enter a great FREE alternative for BlackBerry 10!
The Plagiarism Checker app is that free alternative to the Turnitin.com solution. I think it’s a perfect application for the BlackBerry 10 and adds to the tool box that it is. I really am really happy to see such tools available, and yes, I know that Plagiarism Checker has been available for a while, but I think it’s important to remember what apps are available and also for those who just got their BlackBerry 10 devices who are looking for such apps. Another great tidbit about Plagiarism Checker is that it’s FREE!
***I’d like to thank @xtremesniper for pointing out that the logo is the inverted colored logo of Microsoft’s PowerPoint. Hopefully something can be explained. Pretty ironic for a plagiarism app indeed.***
