- Stock Continues To Tumble As BlackBerry Loses Control Of Their Message
BlackBerry really underperformed compared to expectations this past Friday and there is no way to really avoid that fact. On the other hand BlackBerry was doing a wonderful job in the last 6-12 months in terms of taking control of their messaging and perception in the media. For some reason that finesse was totally lost this past Friday. BlackBerry executives knew that they were delivering disappointing news including a net income loss (even though revenue was up), lower than expected BlackBerry 10 shipments, drops in gross margins and service revenue, and other tidbits. The only real bright point they focused on was their increase in cash and positive cash flow for now. As of now BlackBerrys stock is trading below $10 after trading around $14-15 for a few months now.
The thing is BlackBerry does have a story and vision to tell but for some reason BlackBerry's executives were totally unprepared to relay that during the conference call on Friday. Instead of projecting confidence we had BlackBerry CEO and CFO sounding like they didn't have answers even to the most basic of questions. They could have assumed practically all of the questions analysts threw there way and prepared confident responses. Instead we received what came across as nonsensical half answers and dismal guidance for next quarter. What investors, customers, developers, and enterprise clients wanted to hear was BlackBerry's plans for exponentially growing their BlackBerry 10 sales and marketshare.
I was really hoping that BlackBerry PR and executives would kick in and retake control and instill confidence in their vision for BlackBerry now that Canada Day is over but sadly that has not happened. Hopefully they have something planned because right now they are just letting the media spiral their messaging back to the "BlackBerry is dead" days we had 6 months back.

Переслать - Business Card Reader & Document Scanner Apps for BlackBerry 10
To Xuan Triet has been working hard to bring more OCR capabilities to BlackBerry 10. He has followed up his nice Document Scanner app with a separate Business Card Reader app for English. It allows you to easily scan in business cards to your address book using your camera on BlackBerry 10. It still needs some work since most of the cards I scanned required correction but the developer is working on steady improvements.
Check out the lite and full versions of both apps at the links below and let us know what you think! I definitely recommend trying the free versions before purchasing the pro.
- Business Card Reader Lite – Free
- Business Card Reader XT – $4.99

Переслать - Toss Alley Brings Skee Ball Fun to BlackBerry 10
DanLabG has just made quite a few Skee Ball fans happy with Toss Alley for BlackBerry 10. The game is available for the Z10, Q10, and Q5 so all bases are covered. It lets you roll your ball down the ramp and try to win some virtual prizes. This game really brought some flashbacks to when I was 6/7 and playing in the penny arcades all the time.
Check out the Toss Alley fun for yourself for $0.99 in BlackBerry World. Kudos to Alicia @CrackBerry for spotting this one

Переслать - BlackBerry Regional MD for EMEA, Robert Bose, Takes On UK & Ireland
BlackBerrys MD for UK and Ireland, Rob Orr, left BlackBerry last month and now BlackBerry has promoted a replacement. The current EMEA regional director, Robert Bose, is now taking on the UK and Ireland along with his previous responsibilities. Bose has been with BlackBerry since 2006 so he is well familiar with BlackBerrys current struggles in these critical markets. There is no word on if this placement if permanent or just until they find a replacement.

Переслать - Frog Race Free Brings Multiplayer Frogger to the Z10 & PlayBook
A friend of mine pointed out Frog Race (via CrackBerry) today and I had to share. The game is available for the Z10 and PlayBook and has you controlling up to 3 frogs on one device. Your friends and you just press the small bar below the screen to get your frog across the road first. Its actually surprisingly fun and addictive and best of all they have a free version along with a paid version.

Переслать - SafeDrive Reads Out Your Email & SMS on BlackBerry 10
The team at BachKhoa University is at it again this time with SafeDrive for BlackBerry 10. The app attempts to make driving safer by reading out your SMS and email to you when they come in. That way you can ideally keep your eyes on the road. You can also reply to the last message manually which I would not recommend. The app also allows you to choose between a male and female voice but it does have one caveat in terms of features. Currently the app needs to be running as an active frame to work due to BlackBerry not releasing the API for them to run in the background. On the other hand the developer has committed to add such support when it is available.

Переслать - LocalBar2 Brings On Device Sideloading (With Proxy) Back to BlackBerry 10
Some of you may remember LocalBar by Yohanes and its ability to sideload apps onto your PlayBook without a desktop. BlackBerry closed that loop but the developers found a way around it using a proxy. Now the OSBB team has decided to recompile LocalBar for BlackBerry 10 and the PlayBook and bring back the fun. Sadly it still requires a proxy to fool the device into thinking its a computer sideloading the app but it does work. You just need to install the proxy or install Localbar on your PlayBook or separate BlackBerry 10 device.
Check out the details on how to get up and running on OSBB. Keep in mind this is not for the faint of heart.

Переслать - New BlackBerry 10 Sideloading Tool Hopes To Simplify The Process (Beta)
There have been quite a few sideloading tools for BlackBerry 10 and the PlayBook over the years with their pros and cons. Terrence pointed out yet another project that is kicking off now in beta that tries to combine all of the sideloading functions into one. The developers is tied to BB10bars.net so you will be probably seeing some integration there. The goal of the project is essentially to offer the following functionality in one app:
- Downloading BAR files
- Converting APK files
- Installing BAR files
So far the current beta version allows for Installing BAR files, Downloading BAR files, Installer, uninstaller and shortcuts. Upcoming versions will add the APK converter and update tool. Check out the project page on BB10Bars.net for details along with this great thread the author started on CB forums. Hopefully they will give it a proper name soon.

Переслать - BlackBerry Annual General Meeting for Investors Scheduled for July 9th
BlackBerry has set the date for their annual general meeting for shareholders and this one looks like it will be a doozy even compared to the last one. BlackBerry set the date for July 9th which is right around the corner and I am sure the shareholders will be hitting hard. I really do not know why BlackBerry has not tried to control the conversation or do damage control after their fiasco financial report conference call on Friday. Still it will give them another chance to talk to their investors.
If you owned shared on May 21st you will be getting voting materials shortly if you don't already have them.

Переслать - Discovery Channel Launches Free Native BlackBerry 10 App (US Only)
As BlackBerry foretold, the Discovery Channel has launched their BlackBerry 10 app and I am happy to report that it is a native app. On top of that it supports the Z10, Q10, and Q5 right out of the gate. The only catch is that it is US only for now but hopefully that will change. Until then it gives access to loads of buttery smooth clips and videos in its native interface from MythBusters, Deadliest Catch, and more! It also has some great behind the scenes content.

Переслать - 2.7 Million BlackBerry 10 Devices Shipped – New BB7 Device Coming – BB10 on PlayBook Nixed
From todays conference call we have a few details more than the release. First of all BlackBerry shipped about 2.7 million BlackBerry 10 devices. They also confirmed that a new BlackBerry 7 phone was coming. My guess is for lower end markets or corporate liable devices. On top of that they confirmed that BlackBerry 10 was not coming to the PlayBook since performance was just not there but it would continue to be supported. They also stated that their goal is to have no more than 6 devices in each market at a time.

Переслать - BlackBerry Reports Q1 Fiscal 2014 Results – Join the Call @ 8AM EST
BlackBerry just reported their Q1 Fiscal 2014 results and the numbers are in. They reported shipping 6.8 million smartphones without a breakdown for BlackBerry 10. They also increased their cash holdings by $200 million though they did report an overall loss. The interesting thing that stuck out to me is that US revenue is going up and balancing out compared to other regions. BlackBerry stock is going to be on a rollercoaster today since BlackBerry delivered almost exactly what their outlook was last quarter but missed analyst estimates.
Check out the details below or join the call at 8 am ET by dialing 1-800-814-4859 or through your BlackBerry 10 smartphone, personal computer or BlackBerry PlayBook tablet at this link.
BlackBerry Reports First Quarter Fiscal 2014 Results
WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwired – June 28, 2013) – Research In Motion Limited (doing business as BlackBerry(R)) (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSX:BB), a world leader in the mobile communications market, today reported first quarter results for the three months ended June 1, 2013 (all figures in U.S. dollars and U.S. GAAP, except where otherwise indicated).
Q1 Highlights:-- Revenue $3.1 billion, up 15% sequentially from the previous quarter -- North America revenue grows sequentially 30%, APAC revenue grows 35%, EMEA revenue grows 9% -- LATAM revenue declines 6% as Venezuela foreign currency restrictions negatively impact $72 million of service revenue recognition in the first quarter; company gross margins negatively impacted by 2% -- Shipments of 6.8 million smartphones, up 13% sequentially from the previous quarter -- GAAP loss from continuing operations of $84 million, or $0.16 per share -- Adjusted loss from continuing operations of $67 million, or $0.13 per share -- Venezuela foreign currency restrictions impact reported GAAP earnings and adjusted earnings by approximately $0.10 per share; excluding such impact, adjusted earnings in-line with previously provided outlook of approaching breakeven financial results -- Cash flow from operations of $630 million -- Cash and investments balance of $3.1 billion
Q1 Results
Revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2014 was $3.1 billion, up 15% from $2.7 billion in the previous quarter and up 9% from $2.8 billion in the same quarter of fiscal 2013. The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 71% for hardware, 26% for service and 3% for software and other revenue. During the quarter, the Company shipped 6.8 million BlackBerry smartphones and approximately 100,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets.GAAP loss from continuing operations for the quarter was $84 million, or $0.16 per share diluted, compared with a GAAP income from continuing operations of $94 million, or diluted earnings per share of $0.18, in the prior quarter and GAAP loss from continuing operations of $510 million, or $0.97 per share diluted, in the same quarter last year.
Adjusted loss from continuing operations for the first quarter was $67 million, or $0.13 per share diluted. Adjusted loss from continuing operations and adjusted diluted loss per share exclude the impact of pre-tax charges of $26 million ($17 million on an after tax basis) related to the Cost Optimization and Resource Efficiency ("CORE") program. This impact on GAAP loss from continuing operations and diluted loss per share from continuing operations are summarized in the table below.
The total of cash, cash equivalents, short-term and long-term investments was $3.1 billion as of June 1, 2013, compared to $2.9 billion at the end of the previous quarter, an increase of approximately $200 million from the prior quarter. Cash flow from operations in the first quarter was approximately $630 million. Uses of cash included intangible asset additions of approximately $335 million and capital expenditures of approximately $83 million.
"During the first quarter, we continued to focus our efforts on the global roll out of the BlackBerry 10 platform," said Thorsten Heins, President and CEO of BlackBerry. "We are still in the early stages of this launch, but already, the BlackBerry 10 platform and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 are proving themselves to customers to be very secure, flexible and dynamic mobile computing solutions. Over the next three quarters, we will be increasing our investments to support the roll out of new products and services, and to demonstrate that BlackBerry has established itself as a leading and vibrant player in next generation mobile computing solutions for both consumer and enterprise customers."
Outlook
The smartphone market remains highly competitive, making it difficult to estimate units, revenue and levels of profitability. Throughout the remainder of fiscal 2014, the Company will invest in BlackBerry 10 smartphone launches, and the roll out of BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, to continue to establish the new BlackBerry 10 platform in the marketplace. The Company will also invest resources to evolve BlackBerry Messenger into a leading cross platform mobile social messaging application, and launch other revenue initiatives associated with new services and emerging mobile computing opportunities. Based on the competitive market dynamics and these investments, the company anticipates it will generate an operating loss in the second quarter. The company will also continue to implement the cost savings and process-improving initiatives it started last year, in order to drive greater efficiency throughout the company, and redirect capital from these savings to areas of investment that will drive future revenue growth.
Reconciliation of GAAP loss from continuing operations before income taxes, loss from continuing operations and diluted loss per share from continuing operations to adjusted loss from continuing operations before income taxes, adjusted loss from continuing operations and adjusted diluted loss per share from continuing operations:
(United States dollars, in millions except per share data)
For the three months ended -------------------------------------- CORE As Reported: GAAP Charges(1) Adjusted -------------------------------------- Loss from continuing operations before income taxes $ (164) $ 26 $ (138) Loss from continuing operations (84) 17 (67) -------------------------------------- Diluted loss per share from continuing operations $ (0.16) $ 0.03 $ (0.13) -------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- ----- - Adjusted loss from continuing operations and diluted loss per share from continuing operations include the $72 million (approximately $50 million after tax or $0.10 per share) impact on service revenue recognition of the Venezuela foreign currency restrictions noted above.
Note: Adjusted loss from continuing operations before tax, adjusted loss from continuing operations and adjusted diluted loss per share from continuing operations do not have a standardized meaning prescribed by GAAP and thus are not comparable to similarly titled measures presented by other issuers. The Company believes that the presentation of adjusted loss from continuing operations before taxes, adjusted loss from continuing operations and adjusted diluted loss per share from continuing operations enables the Company and its shareholders to better assess the Company’s operating results relative to its operating results in prior periods and improves the comparability of the information presented. Investors should consider these non-GAAP measures in the context of the Company’s GAAP results.
(1) As part of the Company’s ongoing effort to streamline its operations and increase efficiency, the Company commenced the CORE program in March 2012. During the first quarter of fiscal 2014, the Company incurred approximately $26 million in total pre-tax charges related to the CORE program. Substantially all of the pre-tax charges are related to one-time employee termination benefits and facilities costs. During the first quarter of fiscal 2014, charges of approximately $10 million were included in research and development and charges of approximately $16 million were included in selling, marketing, and administration expenses.Supplementary Geographic Revenue Breakdown
