- Take CrackBerry Kevins Mega Community Survey and Help Give BlackBerry Feedback
My buddy Kevin over at CrackBerry is heading to BlackBerrys headquarters next week for BlackBerrys Annual General Meeting of Shareholders. A few friends pointed out to me that he put out a survey to poll the BlackBerry user community on what is important to them so he can relay it while in Waterloo. I think that is a worthy undertaking and hope you will take the time to answer his 41 question survey. He is even throwing in a chance to win a $100 Best Buy gift card. Either way this goes hand in hand with us advocating that BlackBerry start responding to what their actual customers (and not carriers) want and need from them.
Check out the survey here and let us know how it goes.

Переслать - Blippar Image Recognition Augmented Reality App Goes Native on BlackBerry 10
BlackBerry actually used Blippar as a marketing tool (that kind of flopped) when they first launched BlackBerry 10. Their app allowed iOS and Android users to point their app at certain websites and other ads and see why they should switch to BlackBerry 10. These ads are called "blips" and the Blippar app allows your phone to read them through image recognition of magazines, newspapers, billboards, logos, websites, and more. They then launch an experience (think of an overlaid movie trailer, etc) on what is shown through the camera. All in all it is a pretty cool yet limited experience.
Here are the details:
- The visual discovery tool enables Blackberry users to effectively digitise the static, physical world around them.
- Simply by pointing the Z10′s high quality camera at 'blippable' objects and images, users will experience them jumping to life with exclusive, interactive content.
- There are a number of existing markers available for Blackberry users to start blipping including; Heinz Tomato Ketchup, Pepsi Max bottles, The Independent newspaper and many hundreds more.
- Blackberry users need to look for the Blippar 'b' icon printed on blippable objects.
- Blackberry users can browse the in-app catalogue list to see a full list of blippable items.
- Blippar collaborated with Blackberry on the launch of BlackBerry 10 operating system in January this year by enabling iPhone and Android users to experience Z10 on their smartphones with a handset virtual takeover.
- By visiting www.bbtakeover.me users were able to blipp the webpage to launch the BlackBerry 10 OS onto their own iPhone and Android devices. A world's first sneak preview experience of the new BB10 OS.

Переслать - WhatsApp for BlackBerry 10 Gets Quick Bug Fix Update
We just told you about the last WhatsApp feature update and now we have another one. This morning we got a few tips that WhatsApp had pushed out a new build (2.10.9689) to BlackBerry 10 devices. It does not have much more in the description beyond "bugfixes" but I am guessing they are important to release an out of band fix.

Переслать - BlackBerry Updates BBM Channels in Beta Zone for BlackBerry 10 & Legacy BBOS Devices
BlackBerry is continuing to update their popular BBM Channels app in BlackBerry's Beta Zone. They once again are recommending the convoluted sideloading method on BlackBerry 10 instead of just opening up OTA downloads like they are promoting on legacy devices. Either way the update is for both BB10 and Legacy devices bringing some nice updates including the ability to report channel content and more:
- Search for Channels
- Active Text for Channel ID's Within BBOS (5, 6, and 7)
- Deleting My Own Channel
- Support for Animated GIFs
- View Subscriber Count Within a Channel's Preview Screen
- Report Channel Content
Check out the latest download here in the Beta Zone.

Переслать - BlackBerry NEEDS To Push Out BlackBerry 10 OS Updates Globally (Fragmentation)
BlackBerry has a huge problem on their hands when it comes to rolling out BlackBerry 10. The platform is less than 6 months old and it is already suffering fragmentation. BlackBerry still seems to be under the impression that carriers are their friends while BlackBerry's true customers, the device owners, are getting shafted by the "friendly" carriers. Here are two examples:
- Take our poor friends on Verizon or even AT&T with their Z10's running a version of BlackBerry 10 that DOES NOT support many of the most requested apps like Skype.
- Another large demographic of BlackBerry 10 owners purchased their BlackBerry 10 devices abroad and cannot get any OS updates on their devices. From what I hear those numbers are significant.
This sad state of affairs is in stark contrast to the PlayBook OS where BlackBerry managed to roll out OS updates to all devices at once. They even highlighted multiple times how a majority of PlayBook users are always running the latest OS. Now with BlackBerry 10 we have users suffering from frustrating bugs that were fixed on OS builds released months ago that are still not rolled out. The brave of heart have resorted to installing leaked BlackBerry 10 OS builds gratefully collected by the BlackBerry faithful trying to resolve a situation BlackBerry should never have allowed happen in the first place. In short BlackBerry is taking very little visible action to resolve this situation as their loyal (and not so loyal) customers have to resort to underground hacks to fix their products.
A few years back BlackBerry started blazing a trail into public beta programs with their BlackBerry Beta Zone. Sadly they have crippled it with oodles of red tape and convoluted workflow making me wonder if it was designed by the crack squad BlackBerry World team. Still they did start something back then by offering beta OS builds before carriers released them for a very very very small group of devices. I can probably count the number of times they did this on one hand and the OS builds were always extremely dated but it was a start. Sadly that whole effort seems to have sizzled and died.
That is why I am calling on BlackBerry to embrace instead of disenfranchising your true customers when it comes to the latest BlackBerry OS builds. Many of these hardcore users are anyways installing some of the latest OS beta builds on their devices and have great feedback to share. Instead of ignoring, fighting, or condemning the OS leaking community and users BlackBerry can actually offer a way for them to improve BlackBerry 10. This is not a novel concept anymore with Apple offering the same program to anyone with a developer account.
So if any of you reading this have friends at BlackBerry or work at BlackBerry make a point of telling them that this sad state of affairs should not be allowed to continue. BlackBerry users should be able to get the latest BlackBerry Beta OS (within reason) instead of being forced to languish on OS builds that are half a year old. BlackBerry has one of three choices to alleviate this problem:
- Push out OS updates to all devices on all carriers within a week or two
- Open up an open beta program where BlackBerrys ACTUAL customers (not carriers) can install the latest official beta build without waiting for their carrier (preferably OTA)
- Or simply continue to ignore their customers and allow carriers to cripple BlackBerry 10 devices with dated OS builds and OS fragmentation where users are forced to install leaked OS builds.
Hopefully they choose the first or even the second but the third is just shameful disregard and gross negligence on their part.
What do you think?

Переслать - Pop Corny Developer Raking it in On BlackBerry 10 vs iOS and Android
I love Luca's posts on the BlackBerry Dev Blog from the developer relations perspective. He just posted a great example of a developer succeeding on BlackBerry 10 with a game that was already popular on iOS. BlackBerry evangelists have long been saying that developers should invest in BlackBerry 10 because they earn more money on BlackBerry. Harry Kalogirou is just such an example with his FlyCraft and Pop Corny games. The chart above shows how Harry's Pop Corny game has brought in revenues on each competing platform since launch.
This led to Harry developing FlyCraft exclusively for BlackBerry. The chart above compares his revenues for FlyCraft to the SUM of ALL of his revenues for Pop Corny on iOS, Android, and BlackBerry altogether. The charts speak for themselves.
PS: If you are a BlackBerry 10 developer please send us your story using the contact us page at the top of this site.

Переслать - BlackBerry Annual and Special Meeting Webcast Details Released for July 9th
We told you before that BlackBerry is having their annual shareholders meeting on Tuesday July 9th at 10AM in Waterloo, Ontario. Now BlackBerry has made it official along with releasing the details on the webcast that will be available for all of us (Details here). Hopefully shareholders will not be coming by with pitchforks this year calling for the CEO's head especially considering how Thorsten was just starting to take the reigns last year around this time.
Hopefully BlackBerry will do something before then to put out their vision of the next few quarters beyond repeating the "competitive market" mantra. They need to be projecting confidence in their platform and their goals for the rest of 2013. We wish them the best of luck!

Переслать - Leaked BlackBerry OS 10.1.0.4537 For Some Z10 Models With "Forever" Gmail Retrieve & More (Q10 Too!)
Brian pointed out to me that Balenax @CBForums has put together a download of OS 10.1.0.4537 from the BlackBerry Z10 SLT100-2 which also supposedly works on the SLT-100-3 and SLT100-4. It also works for the Q10 SQN100-3 but you have to use the 10.2.0.340 radio without GPS so there are compromises. This new version finally brings the ability to set forever email retreival for non-exchange email accounts like Gmail. It also adds a simple numeric password option.
Check out the download here or discuss it in the original thread
