Переслать - US Carriers Launching Isis NFC Payment System in September
We told you previously about Isis as a collaboration between AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and MasterCard along with a few others. Their goal was to bring NFC mobile payments to these carriers and one of the highlights was support for BlackBerry NFC enabled devices. Isis announced this week that they will be planning their debut of Isis for September in Salt Lake City and Austin, Texas. There is no word on when the full rollout will happen but the delay was caused because Isis decided to route charges through the traditional credit card companies rather than carriers.
Right now the MasterCard official list of approved mobile devices (PDF) for this platform include the Bold 9900, Curve 9360 & 9380, and Bold 9790. That means we should hopefully be seeing these devices included at launch. It also makes me wonder how far along RIM is at getting BlackBerry 10 device support from MasterCard.

Переслать - Music Timer Audio Player Released for BlackBerry 10 and Current Smartphones
Keeper let us know about his latest BlackBerry app creation Music Timer in the forums. The new app is available for both BlackBerry 10 along with current OS 5.0+ BlackBerry smartphones. The app is essentially an MP3 player with support for all the audio current BlackBerrys can play along with one useful function. It allows you to set a timer like a sleep timer to stop the music after a certain amount of time has passed. I have quite a few friends that could use such a function for podcasts or listening to music before going to bed.
You can find the BlackBerry OS 5.0+ version for download OTA in the forums from Keepers post. The Music Timer X for BlackBerry 10 is also available now and you can pick it up free from Mediafire and sideload it or it is available for $0.99 in App World if you have a Dev Alpha. It has similar features with more coming soon. Check out the details in the forums.

Переслать - RIM Building Up App World Approval Teams to Handle BlackBerry 10 Influx
It looks like RIM is learning from their mistakes with the launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook. RIM ran a few promotions during that time that lead to an influx of apps into App World. The problem was that RIM's App World approval team could not handle the flow of apps coming in making them take weeks to get approved and getting vendors confirmed. RedNightHawk pointed out to me a quote that RIM's Alec Saunders, head of developer relations, gave to The Star when RIM made the announcement about meeting with carriers. He stated:
"We're gearing up to handle not just a few apps coming in, but we're building a team to handle tens of thousands per month, ahead of that launch,"
This is great news for RIM since their app catalog at the launch of BlackBerry 10 will be critical. They need loads of key quality apps available along with the expected blockbusters like video streaming (Netflix, Hulu, etc), chat (Skype or similar), etc.

Переслать - Reviewer: BlackBerry 10 QWERTY Keyboard is "Fantastic" & Software "Feels Unique"
Long time BlackBerry beat journalist Al Sacco just posted his feedback from his hands on demo with the upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices. Sacco is the latest in the line of media that RIM has been showing the devices to and as a current BlackBerry QWERTY user I was really curious to see what his response would be. After reading his write up today I think we can more or less see where these BlackBerry 10 devices will hit for current QWERTY keyboard device lovers. In Sacco's words:
RIM definitely did not let down customers who love that QWERTY hardware keyboard with this new device. The keyboard is fantastic, and even though I only spent a few minutes typing on it, I was impressed right away and plan to get a new BlackBerry 10 QWERTY smartphone as soon as possible.
Sacco also gives us a bit of a taste about the software being way more polished than what RIM was showing at BlackBerry World. He also confirmed that the Full Touch device looks like an aesthetically pleasing and relatively light version of the Dev Alpha though not as thin as some recent Android phones. He also relates that the BlackBerry 10 experience and software "feels unique" instead of borrowed from iOS, android, or Windows Phone though it does have touches of WebOS.
I highly recommend checking out Al Sacco's full write up on the devices. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Переслать - Leaked Apple Genius Employee Training Manual Makes Your Head Spin
I could not stop laughing while reading this latest leak to come out of Apple. Sam Biddle of Gizmodo scored the latest Genius Training Student Workbook that Apple uses to train their "Genius" store employees. While some of this stuff is pretty self explanatory (though taken to Apple's anal retentive extremes) other parts of it seem to really boggle the mind. My favorite snippet is:
Did your computer crash? No, it "stops responding." Never say crash.
What if some Apple software has a bug? Wrong: there’s an "issue," "condition," or simply "situation."
You don’t "eliminate" a problem—you "reduce" it.
No Apple products are hot—at most they’re "warm."Some are going to scream that it is a reality distortion field but truthfully Apple's retail experience is second to none according to many retail experts. I have been to a few stores where employees could use a few lessons in humanity that Apple indoctrinates. Either way I found the excerpts of the Genius Training Student Workbook Gizmodo posted to be quite entertaining. Check them out yourself and let us know what you think!

Переслать - Open on Tablet Sends Websites From your PC to Your PlayBook
Daniel Bigham let us know about his latest PC<->PlayBook interaction app called Open on Tablet. Just like his other apps it allows you to send data between your pc and your PlayBook this time opening up URL's from your PC to your PlayBook. I am really hoping that Daniel combines all of his apps like iTunes Sync and Print into one utility and is working on a BlackBerry 10 version that runs in the background all the time.

Переслать - Check out 40 BlackBerry Developer Success Story Q&As from RIM
I am not sure exactly when RIM published these 40 BlackBerry developer success stories but thought it would be worthwhile sharing them. For years there has been an unsung story of BlackBerry developers successfully tapping the BlackBerry market. We have shared some of these developer success stories in the past but I learned quite a bit more about these developers from their stories and experiences developing for BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook.
RIM has gone out and collected some great success stories from 40 top BlackBerry developers. They even have a Q&A section that usually goes for four or so questions delving into their experience. If you are a developer and are considering developing for BlackBerry Smartphones, PlayBook, or BlackBerry 10 I highly recommend reading them:

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK Gets Quick Bug Fix Refresh
RIM just released an updated BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK but they have just refreshed it yet again. They found that there were two issues in the go live version with code signing issues reported on Apple Mac systems along with config.xml issues with more than one unsupported <feature> element.
This new v1.0.1.17 SDK should help out people running into those issues. I know I heard about the Mac issue so its nice to see RIM jumping ahead of this one and posting it on the DevBlog. Check out the new BlackBerry 10 WebWorks release here.

Переслать - BlackBerry Beta Zone To Soon Allow You To Login with BlackBerry ID
It looks like good usability is sinking into RIM's culture. The latest sign is an announcement by the Beta Zone that they sent to users about changes to the BlackBerry Beta Zone Logins. RIM is planning on streamlining the login process letting you integrate your Beta Zone with BlackBerry ID. This will allow you to integrate your Beta Zone account with your BlackBerry ID for the future. If your BlackBerry ID matches your Beta Zone then you will automatically be connected in the coming weeks. Hopefully this means that RIM will use your BlackBerry ID everywhere from now on. I am also guessing this is a sign that BlackBerry 10 will also be using the Beta Zone even though the PlayBook does not currently do so.
Check out the announcement below:
Hello Ronen!
We wanted to send out a quick email to let you know about some upcoming changes to the BlackBerry Beta Zone login.
What changes are coming?
We are pleased to announce that we will be integrating BlackBerry Beta Zone with BlackBerry ID (BBID) to create a more streamlined login experience for you. If you do not currently have a BlackBerry ID, not a problem, you can simply create one here!
How is my current account affected?
Upon logging in to BlackBerry Beta Zone with your BlackBerry ID, you will have the opportunity to link all of your existing BlackBerry Beta Zone programs and profile information in one simple step.
If you have a verified BlackBerry ID username that matches your Beta Zone username, then you will have nothing to worry about – account linking will be seamless and you will have access to your existing profile right away!
When are these changes taking place?
The BlackBerry Beta Zone login changes will take place in the coming weeks, and we will notify you once the changes have been implemented.
Please email betainfo@rim.com if you have any questions, comments or concerns.
Thank you,
BlackBerry Beta Zone Team

Переслать - Nobex Radio Already Testing BlackBerry 10 App in App World
Nobex engineers have been pretty vocal about developing for BlackBerry 10 so this is no real surprise. RIM has been encouraging developers with BlackBerry 10 Dev Alphas to submit apps into App World for other devs with Dev Alpha's to test. Shane @OSBB noticed that Nobex has already done so with a beta of Nobex Radio for BlackBerry 10. It would be very interesting to learn how long it took Nobex to bring the app over. I tried it and it looks quite nice though the visual elements need some tweaking.
I am pretty curious to learn who RIM is lining up as developer partners at launch. My guess is Nobex will be one of them.

Переслать - FAA Taking Another Look At In-flight Use of Electronics Including Smartphones
I am not sure how I feel about this latest turn of events from the FAA in the US. The Federal Aviation Administration is creating a new cross government industry group to study if smartphones and other electronics will be safe to run during flights. This essentially could do away with flight mode though the FAA and carriers still seem firmly against in flight calls or VoIP. This new group will consider testing new standards for in-flight electronics use. That could include takeoff and landing along with cellular connections running in the sky though the FAA is still thinking it might distract passengers during safety presentations.
The FAA is actually kicking things of with a public request for comments for 60 days starting today. They are looking for companies to comment on the issues and possible rules and certifications possible for electronics and aircraft. All in all it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. If it is safe I don't see the issue with cellular data being allowed since that does not really differ from Wi-Fi data on current planes. I am just glad they nixed in flight calling in the bud from the carriers.

Переслать - As Promised RIM Consolidates Manufacturing By Cutting Out Flextronics
Back in May of this year Flextronics told investors that they were reducing their relationship with RIM as RIM was improving their supply chain. In June RIM cut out Celestica from their manufacturing supply chain and now the BusinessTimes (via BBNews.pl) is reporting that Flextronics is also no longer manufacturing BlackBerry phones in Penang. RIM responded that they do not comment on supplier specific relations but they did say that:
"As we outlined in previous earnings calls, we are making changes to our supply chain as part of wider efforts to improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of RIM’s operations."
As far as I understand that leaves Jabil Circuit Inc manufacturing BlackBerry smartphones and Quanta Computer Inc for the PlayBook. It also has me wondering who RIM is using to build BlackBerry 10 phones. It also raises the question if RIM is working with another manufacturer altogether for the devices. Let us know if you spot more info!

Переслать - Blurts To Soon Allow You To View BBM Messages From Your PC
It seems like the guys at MLH Software have figure out a way to get your BBM messages brought to your PC. Their Blurts Pro app has been bringing SMS messages to your PC for awhile now but they just posted on Twitter this week that BBM support is coming soon. There have been some solutions in the past for doing this but I am always up for competition. It requires the same desktop client as Blurts and I am really hoping it works nicely.
Check out Blurts Pro in App World or more details from @MLHsoftware on Twitter
