- RIM Offers Dev Alpha Owners Free Passes to BlackBerry Jam Americas 2012
Now this seems like a smart move on RIM's part to capitalize on their investment of seeded BlackBerry 10 Dev Alphas. Along with quite a few other devs I have received an email from RIM offering a complimentary pass to BlackBerry Jam Americas 2012. I am not quite sure what the qualification criteria is but if you have not received the email and own a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha you may want to check your inbox or spam folder.
Smart move on RIM's part to keep BlackBerry 10 developers engaged up until the launch! Let us know if you will be there.

Переслать - What Do You Think Of RIM Putting Removable Batteries in BlackBerry 10 Devices?
In the latest media spree coming from interviews with Thorsten Heins and other RIM executives we have learned some important things about BlackBerry 10 such as the upcoming 6 device lineup. One of the items that did slip out as a side note was something that I think is pretty significant. Thorsten Heins confirmed that BlackBerry 10 devices will have user replaceable batteries. This is after the BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha shipped with non user replaceable batteries.
I was really hoping that RIM would move back this way since the non user replaceable battery on iPhone and some Android devices is a real pain. This will hopefully also mean that users who live off extended batteries should also be good to go for BlackBerry 10 or can pack multiple batteries.
What do you think of this revelation?

Переслать - RIM Smartly Changes BlackBerry 10 Browser User Agent to Improve Browser Detection
RIM had to make the annoying but smart decision to change up the browser agent for BlackBerry 10 devices. This is the user agent that the browser reports to servers. Many websites including BerryReview use this user agent to decide what version of their mobile or desktop site to serve to the device. As some of you may have noticed this has lead to some websites serving extremely low fidelity versions of their website to BlackBerry PlayBooks or BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices. This is because they just check to see if the word BlackBerry is in the user agent.
To fix this RIM has changed the user agent for BlackBerry 10 to say BB10 instead of BlackBerry. The new user agent will look like:
Mozilla/5.0 (BB10; <Device Model>) AppleWebKit/<WebKit Version> (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/<BB Version #> Mobile Safari/<WebKit Version>
Check out RIM's explanation of the change along with their suggested identification pattern for BlackBerry 10 devices on the dev blog.

- RIM Publishes Changes in Upcoming BlackBerry Enterprise Server v5.0.4
RIM has not even announced BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 SP4 but they have just made its features official. Piotr @BBNews.pl noticed that RIM published a knowledge base article detailing the new features of BES 5.0.4 for Exchange, Novell GroupWise, and IBM Lotus Domino. Many of these updates seem to mimic the latest BIS update but you can find the details below. Mainly what I found interesting was the higher limit for HTML emails and attachments along with automatically pre-populating your older email on every activation not just pin changes.
Java Support
- Java® 6 Update 31 or higher
BlackBerry Monitoring Service Removed
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server 5.0 SP4 does not include the BlackBerry® Monitoring Service.
- No version of the BlackBerry® Monitoring Service works with BlackBerry® Enterprise Server 5.0 SP4.
- Upon upgrading to BlackBerry® Enterprise Server 5.0 SP4, the Installer will force the removal of the BlackBerry Monitoring Service component if it is installed.
New Messaging Features
- Includes support for sending messages that use Latin characters along with Hebrew or Arabic characters.
- The maximum size of HTML email messages has been increased from 32KB to 300KB.
- The default maximum attachment size has been increased from from 3MB to 10MB.
- Synchronizes the full body of sent messages to the BlackBerry® smartphone.
- The time from the BlackBerry® smartphone is used to indicate the time a message was sent instead of using the time on the server. Sent messages now display the correct sent time even if the BlackBerry® smartphone is in a time zone that is different from the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server.
- The BlackBerry® Attachment Service now supports password-protected attachments.
- The BlackBerry® Attachment Service for displays more shapes from Microsoft® PowerPoint® attachments.
Email Pre-Population
- The default number of messages to prepopulate has been increased to 1000 or 14 days of messages (whichever is less).
- Performs prepopulation at every activation, not just when a PIN changes (for example if all data and applications are deleted and the smartphone is activated again).
- Includes both header and body information in prepopulated messages.
New Calendar Features
- Canceled meetings can be left in the calendar on BlackBerry® smartphones instead of automatically removing them. This feature is supported on BlackBerry® device software 7.1 and higher.
Security Enhancements
- Includes security enhancements that are designed to allow verification of data integrity and authenticity for organizations that use multiple layers of encryption.
BlackBerry Enterprise Server Resource Kit
- The BlackBerry® Enterprise Transporter includes online help.
- Does not include the BlackBerry® Domain Search tool because BlackBerry® Mobile Fusion Studio includes the features the tool offered.
Performance Features
- Includes enhancements that reduce the workload on the computer that hosts the BlackBerry® Configuration Database.
Access Control Policies
- Administrators can assign access control policies to both individuals and groups.
VPN Profile Certificates
- Administrators can configure VPN profile certificates for BlackBerry® smartphones so that users do not need to perform this task.

Переслать - RIM Invites UI Designers to "Stump the BlackBerry Devs"
I am really enjoying the new lines of communication RIM has opened up to their developer community. Derek Konigsberg, a long time BlackBerry developer and a friend, inspired RIM's developer relations team to try a new idea. Its called Stump the BlackBerry Devs and encourages BlackBerry UI designers to submit mock ups or designs that would be difficult to implement using the BlackBerry 10 Cascades UI framework. The Cascades UI development team will try to implement that mock up using Cascades using no hardcoded values.
You simply have to submit an image of your mock-up to the @BlackBerryDev Twitter account using the hashtag #StumpTheBlackBerryDevs to be part of it before August 31st. RIM will then choose the three most difficult and creative submissions in September and implement them using the R8 SDK beta release that is coming soon. RIM will then reveal the designs during BlackBerry Jam Americas during a session on the Unconference Day.
Check out the details here on the DevBlog and let us know if you submit a design!

Переслать - RIM Offers Enterprise & Government Customers a BlackBerry 7 Trade-Up and Recycle Program
RIM has had a tradeup program for awhile now to get enterprise and government customers on BlackBerry 7 devices. This is actually a great idea since many of these customers are still running lower end BlackBerry 6 or even BlackBerry 5 devices. RIM has just announced another sweetener to to the tradeup deal with a new Trade-Up and Recycle program. This gives government and enterprise customers up to $100 off each device when you trade in an older BlackBerry device along with helping with recycling the older devices.
Check out the details in the announcement below:
Enterprise and Government Customers Can Save Money on BlackBerry 7 Smartphones with New "Trade-Up and Recycle Program"
WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Aug. 16, 2012) – A new program from Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) can save enterprise and government customers on the costs of upgrading to BlackBerry(R) 7 smartphones while also helping with the responsible recycling of old devices. RIM announced today that it is working with e-Cycle LLC to offer a new trade-up and recycle program to customers in the United States.
Under the program, enterprise and government customers can get a rebate of up to $100 per device purchased when they trade in an older BlackBerry smartphone for the purchase of a new BlackBerry 7 smartphone(i).
"RIM is pleased to work with e-Cycle to help customers upgrade their older BlackBerry smartphones to the latest BlackBerry 7 models, while also helping to facilitate responsible recycling," said Richard Piasentin, Managing Director for the U.S. at RIM.
"This program provides BlackBerry customers with a cost effective way to upgrade to the latest BlackBerry smartphones and helps reduce the impact on the environment by diverting electronic waste from landfills," said Christopher Irion, e-Cycle founder and CEO.

Переслать - Shape Releases Free IM+ for the PlayBook (Android Port)
While Shape does have a decent BlackBerry PlayBook Instant Messaging client called IM+ they have been pricing it a bit high at $7.99. This has left space for them to release a free version of IM+ for the PlayBook but there is a catch. This free version is not a free copy of the BlackBerry PlayBook optimized version of IM+ but rather a port of their free Android IM+ app.
This means this free version is not designed for the PlayBook but it does work decently. Check out IM+ free free for the PlayBook in App World.

Переслать - Ripple Emulator Refreshed Along With BlackBerry 10 WebWorks Community APIs
RIM has updated their Ripple Emulator this week with a quick refresh. It now allows you to easily set the services to start and stop with chrome and other simplifications to avoid the command line. This new refresh also adds emulation for the new APIs delivered in the latest BlackBerry WebWorks SDK releases. RIM has also enhanced support for the Apache Cordova emulation for those of you using it. Check out the details on their DevBlog or more on the Ripple download page.
Also worth noting is that RIM has updated the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK to expose the ability for creating your own extensions. This allows you to add your own native APIs that RIM has not exposed yet in the same way RIM does. If you wanted access to some more native functions from WebWorks or want to contribute your own APIs in the future to the community check out the details here.
Personally I am loving RIM's focus on solid HTML5 WebWorks development for BlackBerry 10.

Переслать - RIM Announces Standardized BlackBerry 10 Screen Resolutions
We have been hearing rumors for a bit that RIM is planning on standardizing the BlackBerry 10 screen resolutions. They have already confirmed that the first BlackBerry 10 device will have a 1280×768 screen resolution like the Dev Alpha. They explain that this is because the device is pretty far along in production but from then on out they will be using two new standard resolutions. That means future BlackBerry 10 devices will have a 1280×720 screen resolution (16:9 ratio) and a 720×720 resolution for keyboard devices (1:1 ratio).
The Cascades framework will be ready for all of these resolutions and RIM has some details on how this will work on their Dev Blog. Its great to see RIM being transparent about this. Let us know what you are thinking if you are developing for BlackBerry 10!

Переслать - Gist.Com Now In charge of Everything Social At RIM! Closes Door To New Users
RIM acquired the company Gist back in early 2011, and soon began working on integrating their skills into the PlayBook OS. When PlayBook OS 2.0 we saw their work with the new contact app with social integration. Now the company has announced in a blog post that they will be closing the doors to new users, and will be completely focus on working on everything social for BlackBerry, including BBM. Check out what they had to say:
We started Gist in 2008 to make connecting with your key contacts faster and easier to help you create stronger business relationships. In February of 2011, we agreed to become part of Research In Motion® (RIM®) and bring the Gist vision to millions of BlackBerry® customers and help create the world's largest connected social graph. A few months ago, we shared exciting news about the new BlackBerry® PlayBook™ OS 2.0 Contacts app that we've been working on since joining RIM. More recently, our team has been tasked with creating the native address book/contact manager for the next generation platform, BlackBerry® 10. In addition to our core focus on the Contacts app, we have been given expanded responsibility for everything social at RIM including BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™), Facebook® and Twitter® apps and instant messaging as well as much of the identity platform (BlackBerry® ID), location services and user analytics features. With all this responsibility, we feel even more empowered to deliver a truly unique and amazing experience for aggregating, enhancing and connecting you deeply with your key contacts. All of this feels pretty exciting, but you may have noticed limited innovation on the core Gist product offering over the last year. In an effort to make the most of our new focus, we have, with heavy hearts, decided to shutdown the stand-alone Gist service. Sigh.
Though the company has closed it's doors to new users, they have set up a support page for those existing users who wish to migrate their information to another service. For the support page click here. Read more about the migration steps at this link.
