  • Five Tip Friday – Securing personal information on a BlackBerry smartphone

For today's Five Tip Friday, I thought I would provide some tips for keeping my personal information secure on my BlackBerry® smartphone. I'll be covering everything from using a secure password to encryption of your documents stored on an inserted media card.

    1. Use the Password Keeper app

BlackBerry Password Keeper allows you to securely store passwords or banking PINs on your BlackBerry smartphone. If you have never used the Password Keeper app, check out our blog post on how to set up and use BlackBerry Password Keeper to learn more.

On top of securely storing your information, you can use the Password Keeper app to generate a secure random password for you. To try out this feature, complete the following steps.

  • Five Pic Friday: Team BlackBerry Pets

Let's face it: We all love snapping pictures of our pets with our BlackBerry® smartphones. There's nothing better than showing off pics of your furry companions to your co-workers and friends – that's why we're dedicating this month's Five Pic Friday blog post to our community's pets. As an added bonus, we couldn't resist including a couple BlackBerry Photos from RIM® Community Managers Carolyn (^CH) and Kerri (^KB)! Check out the five pictures below and be sure to head to our BlackBerry Flickr® Page to see the rest of our Team BlackBerry Pets.

  • Hitting a Home Run for Charity with Joe Carter [VIDEO]

Are you as big of a baseball fan as I am? If, so you're in for a treat. This summer, BlackBerry® was lucky enough to be able to support the annual Joe Carter Classic Golf Tournament, an event held in Toronto, Canada that gathers together friends and celebrities alike to help raise funds for the Children's Aid Foundation. Since the tournament began, it has helped to raise over half-a-million dollars for the Foundation.

I caught up with baseball legend Joe Carter and President of the Children's Aid Foundation Len Gamache to talk about why the event is so important, and how sponsors like BlackBerry help make it possible.

  • "Before and After: Photo App" with Photo Studio

Given the strong interest in mobile photo editing applications, we're introducing a new Inside BlackBerry® Blog series called "Before and After: Photo App," where we'll highlight a new photo editing app each month and include photos we've taken – both the original and the edited version – to show why the app is so cool. Whether a novice photographer or a professional, there'll be something here for everyone, and we encourage you to share your thoughts and photos!

Let's get started with Photo Studio™ by KVAD Group® for BlackBerry, available for both BlackBerry smartphones and the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet. The basic version of Photo Studio is free, while the PRO version costs $5.99 $3.99 to download and includes an expanded catalog of effects, picture frames, and a color splash editor.

Three features I love about Photo Studio, followed by a “Before and After” demonstration used on a picture of Puerto Rico taken by my friend:

    • It makes a splash. Photo Studio boasts over 100 "effect" filters for your photos including "Vintage," "Blur," "Sketch," and "Art." Once your masterpiece is finished, Photo Studio allows you to share your pictures on Twitter®, Facebook®, BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™), or other message applications installed on your device.
    • It cures the blues (and reds, and greens…). Clean up any imperfections in old photos with RGB color adjust, hue, brightness, contrast, and saturation adjustments.
    • It's compatible. Photo Studio works on BlackBerry® OS 5 and up, along with the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet OS. Developer KVAD Group also provides an open API for future developers to integrate their apps with Photo Studio, which means future messaging apps also have the ability to integrate with Photo Studio.

    BEFORE

    AFTER

Utilizing Photo Studio, I created the "after" picture by applying the "Old Style" effect and the "Mystique" effect before turning up the saturation and brightness by 25. Just like that, my picture of modern-day Puerto Rico is transformed into 1940s Casablanca.

As mentioned earlier, the "Before and After: Photo App" series will be a regular feature here on the Inside BlackBerry Blog, so if there is an app you would like to see featured or a question on a featured app you'd like answered, please let us know in the comments.
