Переслать - RIM Announces Three More Cities for BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour
RIM has been getting some pretty strong demand for their BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour and they are responding with some more locations. These three new stops are in Canada and the Netherlands. This will give people on the west coast of Canada a chance along with those of you in Amsterdam to get in on the ground floor of BlackBerry 10. It was also cool to see RIM finally do one of the BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tours in their hometown of Waterloo.
Registration details for all three cities are at:
- August 23 – Kitchener-Waterloo, ON, Canada – http://www.blackberryjamworldtour.com/kitchener-waterloo
- August 28 – Vancouver, BC, Canada – http://www.blackberryjamworldtour.com/vancouver

Переслать - RIM Denies Reports That it Gave Indian Government Access to BES
RIM once again had to vehemently deny senseless reports coming from mainstream Indian media that RIM has handed over BES corporate email access to the Indian Government. Anyone who knows how BES works would know that RIM does not have the keys that the government would need to be able to read BES email. Mainly because RIM cannot hand over keys it does not have access to.
The Economic Times in India cited claims from telecom department officials and documents saying that RIM gave India access to corporate emails. This is not the first time that RIM has had to deny doing this and you would think the Indian media would get the hint. Especially since every time RIM reconfirms that not only have they not done it but they CANNOT do it.
Hopefully David Paterson, RIM's head of government relations set the record straight (via Reuters) once and for all by stating that:
"The fact is that BlackBerry enterprise communications in India remain secure and encrypted. No change has been made or ever can be made in India or anywhere,"
Hopefully Indian officials will soon realize that this monitoring is relatively pointless since it can be circumvented by anyone willing to pay $10 a month for BES or other secure email solutions. Maybe their security model is counting on terrorists to be idiots?

Переслать - Thorsten Heins Reiterates that RIM is Considering Licensing BlackBerry 10
RIM and Thorsten Heins have made it clear multiple times in the past that they are considering licensing BlackBerry 10. Today the news seems to have made a resurgence thanks to an interview with Thorsten Heins with the Telegraph. When I read that section of the interview I did not think twice about it but since it is news today I thought it would be worth sharing a few tiny details that Thorsten added. We now also know that RIM is still strategically considering licensing.
Here is what Thorsten told The Telegraph:
Indeed, RIM will launch BB10 with two devices that are crucial to its survival and only one will have a keyboard. The more expensive device will be a touchscreen. Heins is keenly aware that he must get cheaper devices into the mainstream. "We don't have the economy of scale to compete against the guys who crank out 60 handsets a year. We have to differentiate and have a focused platform. To deliver BB10 we may need to look at licensing it to someone who can do this at a way better cost proposition than I can do it. There's different options we could do that we're currently investigating."
That raises the prospect of a BlackBerry phone that is made by, say, Samsung or Sony. "You could think about us building a reference system, and then basically licensing that reference design, have others build the hardware around it – either it's a BlackBerry or it's something else being built on the BlackBerry platform. We're investigating this and it's way too early to get into any details. We have to also model this from a finance perspective – that's why we're working with the financial advisers to see if we do this where would it take the company. Either we do it ourselves or we do it with a partner. But we will not abandon the subscriber base."

Переслать - Thorsten Heins Shares A Wide Variaty of Details in Latest Interview
Earlier this week The Star published an interesting article about RIM trying to compare it with Apple's comeback but it was a bit all over the place. Its saving grace was some solid quotes from RIM executives including Thorsten Heins. Now Thorsten Heins has sat down with The Telegraph for a much longer more cohesive interview that I think is well worth reading. In it Heins discusses how BlackBerry is not "in a trough" and details some other quote-able quotes. He even shares a bit about how his BlackBerry 10 device has never reset on him and other details. Here are some of my favorite:
- "We don't have the resources like a Microsoft; we have to place one bet and make it right; we don't want to go for an intermediate step. It comes out in the first quarter and I think a lot of people are going to be surprised."
- He claims that the last major release, the sixth of eight milestones on the way to the final version, was the biggest and the most disruptive. "We were not happy that this had happened. But we were satisfied with the software being built. Am I disappointed? Sure I am but if you build a whole new platform it's a different size of a task."
I highly recommend checking out the full interview here at the Telegraph

Переслать - RIM Launches the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook! Canadian Launch August 9th
Research In Motion has finally let the cat out of the bag on the release date of the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook. The 4G LTE PlayBook will be available in Canada starting August 9th! Yes, you read the title correctly. The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet you know and love is now even better, with a new model available in Canada on select carriers beginning August 9th that has built-in support for ultra-fast 4G LTE™ networks.
WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – August 02, 2012) – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM)(TSX: RIM) today launched the new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with built-in support for cellular networks. The new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook maintains a sleek and ultra-portable form while delivering overall faster performance over the original BlackBerry PlayBook, as well as support for blazing fast 4G LTE networks. Launching in Canada first, the new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook allows customers to work more productively and connect to the Internet, as well as access their email, on-line apps, media and content, from more places than ever.
"We're excited to bring customers the first BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with support for 4G LTE networks," said David J. Smith, Executive Vice President, Mobile Computing at Research In Motion. "The new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook offers a broad range of premium features, including a stunning 7 inch display, front and rear facing HD video cameras, HDMI out and stereo speakers, and it also offers premium performance on high speed cellular networks, helping customers to be more productive than ever and to make the most of their time on the go."
Featuring the latest BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2 software, the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet gives customers access to high speed mobile networks around the world (LTE and HSPA+)(1) and offers an exceptional, high-fidelity, fast web experience that supports more HTML5 functionality than any other native tablet browser on the market(2). The powerful unified inbox allows users to easily manage multiple personal and work email accounts, as well as messages from Twitter®, Facebook® and LinkedIn, all in one place. The built-in Calendar and Contacts apps offer features to help customers better manage schedules and prepare for more effective meetings. Plus, the apps' unique integration with social networks can provide customers with a wealth of information about their contacts at their fingertips.
The 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is also enterprise ready. It can be easily managed with BlackBerry Mobile Fusion and includes BlackBerry® Balance technology, which allows a user to use a BlackBerry PlayBook for both work and personal purposes by keeping business information highly secure and separate from personal information.
Out of the box, the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet comes preloaded with the tools customers need to be productive as well as to have fun, whether in the office, at home or on the road. Thousands of apps for work and play are also available on the BlackBerry App World storefront, such as the recently launched BlackBerry Video Store for all PlayBook customers in Canada, bringing additional functionality and value to customers. The BlackBerry Video Store offers a catalog of thousands of movies and TV shows. Customers can begin watching media as soon as they start to download a file, so they won't have to wait for the entire file to transfer before they can begin enjoying great entertainment on the tablet's high resolution display or on an HDTV using the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet's HDMI output. Canadians can download the free Video Store app on BlackBerry App World.
The 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will come with 32GB of memory storage and will be available from Bell, Rogers and TELUS in Canada on August 9, 2012. Additional variants of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet supporting various high speed cellular networks are expected to be available in the coming months from carriers in the US, Europe, South Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
For more information about the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, please visit: http://ca.blackberry.com/playbook-tablet.html. Data plans are sold separately.(3)
(1) LTE connectivity is currently only available from a limited number of carriers in specific countries. Where LTE is not available, the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet can automatically adjust to connect on HSPA+.
(2) As measured by the independent HTML5 test site at http://html5test.com/results/tablet.html
(3) Check with your wireless service provider for availability, terms and conditions

Research In Motion has officially released OS 2.0.1.668 for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now apparently, we are hearing that version 2.1.0.560 will be the ‘stock’ OS for the BlackBerry PlayBook 4G. Anyway, this update is also a maintenance update from what we are hearing.
There is no change log from RIM yet, so let us know in the comments if you notice anything different. Hopefully we will see another update to v2.1.x soon!

Переслать - Hipe Waterproof Bluetooth Stereo Shower Speaker
After iDevices finally announced that their iShower shower Bluetooth speaker was now available I immediately headed to Amazon to see if any new competition has popped up. Turns out that there is a pretty solid shower Bluetooth speaker available now from Amazon from Hipe. The Hipe Waterproof Bluetooth Stereo Shower Speaker is only $69.99 compared to the iShowers $99.99 which is a nice touch. Also worth noting is that the Hipe has a built in rechargeable battery that has a runtime of 25 hours though according to the reviews on Amazon it could use a bit more power management. It is worth noting that while the description says it is waterproof that still does not mean you can dunk it underwater.

Переслать - Devs: RIM Offers Tutorial For Push Enabled BlackBerry 10 Apps
RIM just added push service support in their latest SDK updates and its a big move for BlackBerry 10. Push is one of the key features of current BlackBerry devices and RIM is doing something similar with BlackBerry 10 though reworking some of the specifics to modernize it. RIM already offered a sample app for push in the new WebWorks SDK called Push Capture but Matthew D'Andrea followed up with a nice tutorial on how to get it running.

Переслать - Free PicStory Image Filtering App Updated With New UI & New Filters

Переслать - RIM Responds to Rumor of Closing Retail Stores in the US
I was sort of happy about the unconfirmed rumor from earlier today that RIM may be closing their Wireless Giant run branded retail stores in 9 US airports. I have never really seen such stores being very successful especially cellphone shops in US airports. Either way RIM has reached out and responded with the following to the rumor:
"We can confirm that the BlackBerry branded retail location in Boston has closed. We are not prepared to comment on rumours or speculation about other BlackBerry branded retail locations in the US. We're constantly studying the consumer market and how customers make purchases. Consumers still have many options to buy BlackBerry products from over 20,000 retail locations in the US and online at ShopBlackBerry.com." (via N4BB)
It looks like RIM probably closed one store and that is that but who knows. I am more interested in their whole holistic marketing strategy for BlackBerry 10 since these airport retail shops do not seem to be very cost effective.

Переслать - RIM Rumored to Be Closing US Retail Stores While Expanding Elsewhere
It is no secret that the nine Wireless Giant BlackBerry Retail stores in the US have not been doing well recently. According to a likely but unconfirmed source at the Cantech Letter RIM is rumored to be closing their US stores. They highlight how this is in contrast to developing countries like the UAE, EMEA, Indonesia, and other areas where RIM is opening multiple new stores. There really is not much substance to this rumor but I have a hunch that RIM would be better served during the launch of BlackBerry 10 with stronger advertising and traveling experience centers at airports and other locations instead of branded stores.
What do you think about what RIM should do about retail locations in the US?
PS: Dave just shot that picture of the Wireless Giant branded BlackBerry store in Newark Airport a few minutes ago.

Переслать - Updated: Rogers Stores Getting Boxes Labeled "PlayBook Security" – Possibly 4G PlayBooks?
Update: CrackBerry has discovered that this box is holding a security casing for the BlackBerry PlayBook 4G. According to a tip from Alberto “certain Rogers will have live units in stores for people to try out and this will serve as theft prevention.”
You have to love how this stuff leaks out. The crew at MobileSyrup scored an internal memo from Rogers that says locations will start receiving a box labeled "PLAYBOOK SECURITY" shortly and they "should store it safely in the back room until further notice." This has them speculating that these have something to do with the 4G BlackBerry PlayBook which was rumored to launch at the end of last month.
The current rumored launch date seems to be next week August 8th or 9th but who knows. Either way we should be learning more soon!

Переслать - iShower Water Resistant Bluetooth Speaker Now Available!
When iDevices first announced the iShower I wrote that they had made my dream come true. Over the years I have gone through many different solutions for listening to Pandora and Slacker in the shower and the iShower will hopefully solve all of them. The iShower is now shipping which means we can test it out for ourselves and see how it stacks up. They not only pitch the iShower for the bath but also for the beach and pool side music and radio listening.
The iShower is available now for $99.99 which is a bit pricey but you can find all the details at www.ishowerinc.com and purchase it there too. Hopefully they get it on Amazon soon so people can fall back on a solid return policy if it does not work out.
Check out their promo video below and let me know if you pick one up. Hopefully we will have a review up soon!

Переслать - HeroCraft Brings Dragon and Dracula & Kikoriki to Smartphones & PlayBook
HeroCraft is continuing to make good on their promise of bringing more games to the PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphones. Their latest releases are two new games with versions for both the PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphones. Personally I am liking the smartphone version of Dragon and Dracula but overall the games look like fun. Kikoriki: the Beginning is based on the animated series Kikoriki and is sort of a cartoon styled platformer. The second game is Dragon and Dracula which is more of an arcade style platformer where you grow your dragon and learn new skills.

Переслать - Wikitude Confirms BlackBerry 10 SDK & Finally Announces TripAdvisor App
I am not sure what took Wikitude so long but they have finally come out and officially announced the TripAdvisor integration they launched earlier this month. It really is just a direct link to the built in TripAdvisor section that you already have in Wikitude on your BlackBerry but it does make it easier to get to. The TripAdvisor Augmented Reality app is available in App World.
What I actually found more interesting in the announcement was that Wikitude has confirmed that they will be releasing their Augmented Reality SDK for BlackBerry 10. That should hopefully make it much easier for companies to create Augmented Reality apps for the new platform at launch. Here is the announcement:
Wikitude launches TripAdvisor Augmented Reality App
Offers 75 million travel reviews and opinions, now available on BlackBerry App WorldSalzburg 1 August, 2012 – Today, Wikitude announced the TripAdvisor Augmented Reality (AR) app for BlackBerry® smartphones, which allows BlackBerry customers around the globe to instantly access an immersive view of hotels, restaurants, and attractions listed on TripAdvisor®.
TripAdvisor Augmented Reality works with a smartphone's camera to help travelers find the best places within their immediate area to eat, sleep, and play. Featuring over 75 million traveler reviews and opinions for destinations around the world, it's easy to find great advice wherever a user happens to be.
"TripAdvisor Augmented Reality gives travelers a new and interactive way of looking at the world around them," says Rory Kenny, Director of Mobile Partnerships for TripAdvisor. "The future potential of augmented reality is without limit, and we're happy to help drive it forward by partnering with Wikitude."
With the same easy access as any favorite app, users can simply tap the TripAdvisor/Wikitude icon on their Home screen to instantly view their surroundings through an Augmented Reality lens. With the addition of this app, customers can use their BlackBerry smartphone to quickly access TripAdvisor's high-quality travel content.
With the Wikitude-powered app on BlackBerry smartphones, once a venue is chosen, customers can quickly dive in to get more information about the location. In one simple action, they can find detailed traveler-submitted reviews, average prices, and more. As with all Wikitude worlds, a tap on the "Bring me there" option provides them with turn-by-turn directions to their desired destination. The app also integrates with BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™), allowing the user to instantly interact with their BBM friends, a feature only possible on the BlackBerry platform.
"Partnering with TripAdvisor on this all new app concept has been phenomenal and it shows how Wikitude can be utilized as a go-to-market platform" says Andy Gstoll, Wikitude's CMO. "With this immersive AR experience, we are very excited to bring TripAdvisor's valuable content to the BlackBerry user community", he adds.
The TripAdvisor Augmented Reality app is another example of Wikitude's commitment to providing new and innovative solutions to content owners, brands, agencies and individuals through AR technology. Wikitude's most recent product launch is the Wikitude SDK, which allows third parties to develop their own AR apps. The company is also preparing an SDK for BlackBerry® 10.
The TripAdvisor Augmented Reality app is only available for BlackBerry smartphones. The app is a free download and requires BlackBerry® 7 OS or higher. For more information or to download, please visit BlackBerry App World™.

Переслать - TAT Founder Hampus Jakobsson Leaves RIM to Work on Another Startup
It is a little over a year and six months since RIM acquired The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) on December 2nd, 2010. RIM's teams have welcomed TAT with open hands and you can see their design elements all over the PlayBook, BlackBerry 10, and even RIM's website. Hell the new UI framework for native apps on BlackBerry 10, Cascades, is the byproduct of their original Cascades product.
This week TAT founder Hampus Jakobsson has announced via Twitter that he is leaving RIM. That is not surprising since most serial entrepreneurs do not like working for big companies for long. He explained on his new personal Twitter account, @hajak, that he left "cause I’m a startup-guy and even if I really liked the company and the people, I felt it was time to start another one."
