Переслать - First Image of BlackBerry N Series Surfaces
Sleepy2009 of NerdBerry just sent me this pic of the first image, of what appears to be the N-Series device. Yes it is only the back, but that’s because there is probably a bar-code on the front. It looks nice, and would be better if we knew the scale of the image to see what size it truly is. Let us know your opinions below.

Переслать - Porsche Design P'9981 in All Black Coming in January
The Porsche Design P'9981 is actually a pretty decent phone when it comes to ridiculously expensive status symbol phones. RIM let us know that Porsche Design has announced a new look for the P'9981 that will be available in Mid January 2013 at Porsche Design stores and online. It will have a stainless steel frame encased in black plastic with a hand applied leather backing and special keyboard. That is on top of the features on the steel grey P'9981 which include:
- A customized Porsche Design user interface and an exclusive, premium BlackBerry-Messenger-PIN
- A fast, fluid web browsing experience
- 1.2 GHz processor, HD video recording, 24-bit high resolution graphics, and advanced sensors enabling new augmented reality applications.
- Built in NFC support for sharing content and information with a simple tap of the BlackBerry
- 8GB of on-board memory, expandable up to 40GB with a micro SD card.
Check out the press release below:
Back in Black: the P'9981 all in black
A new version of the luxury smartphone by Porsche Design
Stuttgart. The luxury brand Porsche Design (Porsche Lizenz- und Handelsgesel-lschaft mbH & Co. KG) is unveiling the new-look P'9981 smartphone. The new version features a striking, completely black, design, further emphasising the iconic essence of the brand. The Porsche Design P'9981 smartphone from BlackBerry® is distinguished by a linear and purist look combined with innovative technology. The P'9981 Black will be available from mid of January 2013 in Porsche Design stores all over the world and in the luxury brand's official online shop.
The black look creates a stylish new take on the product's outstanding design and high-quality materials. The P'9981 Black consists of a stainless steel frame encased in black plastic with a hand-applied leather backing. Additional highlights include a special black QWERTY keyboard and a crystal-clear touch-screen display. Just like the first P'9981, the black version features a customized Porsche Design user interface and an exclusive, premium BlackBerry-Messenger-PIN. The choice of materials and classy black design are typical hallmarks of Porsche Design.
"Since the very beginning, our brand has been identified with the colour black," said Jürgen Geßler, CEO of the Porsche Design Group. "Our very first product was a completely black watch. It was a revolutionary product at the time and proved to be a great talking point all over the world. As is typical of Porsche Design, the choice of black had a functional significance. The "Chronograph I" was inspired by the non-reflective design of racing car controls, with everything in matt black apart from the instruments. The aim was to ensure a clear and easy-to-read display. The Porsche Design P'9981 Black follows this tradition."
Powerful hardware and software
The Porsche Design P'9981 smartphone is based on a very powerful platform with a 1.2 GHz processor and HD video recording, as well as high-resolution 24-bit graphics and modern sensors compatible with new Augmented Reality applications. The P'9981 also has 8 GB of internal memory and a 16 GB micro SD card. The memory can be expanded up to a total of 40 GB. The BlackBerry 7.1 operating system of the Porsche Design P'9981 Black incorporates a latest-generation browser, one of the best on the market, to ensure a fast and flowing surfing experience. The smartphone also features Liquid Graphics™ technology for smooth and very high-resolution graphic displays.
In May 2012, the judges for the prestigious Plus X Award® selected the Porsche Design P'9981 smartphone from BlackBerry as the "Smartphone of the Year 2012".
Porsche Design is a luxury brand with a special focus on products that are technically inspired. The brand Porsche Design was founded in 1972 by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. The products are the embodiment of functionality, timelessness and purist design. All products of the brand are designed at the Porsche Design Studio in Zell am See, Austria, and are sold worldwide in the brand's own stores, in franchise stores, shop-in-shops, quality department stores and exclusive retailers and via the official online store (www.porsche-design.com/shop).

Переслать - Blackbery L Series to be deemed the Z10 at launch?
New images today from Unwired View show some purported advertising materials for the L Series devices. Shown in black and white colors, it displays the name Z10 as the device name. Now I think Z10 is better than the 4 number system used up to now, but, in the end, to be honest, I don’t really care. They could call it the BlackBerry Porcupine and I would buy it.
Also, when I hear BlackBerry Z10, it made me think of this guy
Yah thats right. Its Lord Z. Maybe he can be one of the celebs pushing BB10 to the masses? Would you say no to him if he told you to buy a BB10 device? Lord Z with the Z10! BAMM!

Переслать - Research in Motions Q3 2012 Earnings Call Highlights
The earnings call has started and I will try to do a rundown of what is said as it happens!
- RIM is now a leaner and much more efficient organization – Heins
- Most regions were stable or showed growth in users, but, the USA declined a lot which caused the net loss of users over the quarter – Heins
- Reaction to BB10 from carriers has been “exceptional”
- BB10 will be available “shortly” after Jan 30
- 150 carriers now testing BB10
- Heins believes RIM is in very strong financial shape, the balance sheet is terrific
- RIM believes their abilities to handle the patent wars is very good, which will help them in the future
- RIM plans to offer a range of services to go with BB10
- BIS users will generate very little to no service revenue; however, enterprise users will continue to require to pay service fees – This is BIG
- The whole model of service fees will be changing
- Customers demand and respond to innovation and BB10 delivers on this request
- Heins believes the company has stabilized and they will turn the corner in the next year
- Next quarter will be rough due to combination of things including: People not buying BB7 devices because they will wait BB10 and huge marketing budget
- Current workforce is 13400 and layoffs are about 75% done
- RIM will have many pricing tiers for services related to BIS/BES, this will allow them to dominate the enterprise market by offering the right services for each company that needs enterprise services
- More info on these service fee changes will be announced once BB10 is launched
- will offer additional services “beyond the traditional mobile device management”
- Research and Development costs are the most they have been in 12 quarters
- BB7 USERS WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BY SERVICE FEE CHANGES, WILL ONLY AFFECT BB10 USERS

Переслать - Research in Motion's Q3 2013 Earnings Report is In!
The Q3 Earnings Report is in and here are the details. This was one of the most important earnings calls in my opinion as it will be the last before the official start of the Blackberry 10 era. Investors , consumers and fans should really be watching two things. How much cash RIM has in the bank and how many active users they have.
As noted in various other publications, analysts expect the RIM to
- Report a loss of $0.35 per share for the third quarter
- Revenue for the third quarter is expected to come in at $2.65 billion.
RIM posted the results and they
- Reported a loss of $0.22 per share which beat the analysts predictions
- Revenue of 2.7 billion which slightly beat estimates
- Subscriber base has dropped to 79 million
- RIM increased their cash reserves to $2.9 billion
So what does this really mean. The way I see it. They still managed to add cash to the bank to the tune of $600 million and now have $2.9 billion in the bank!! This is very good news. Subscriber base is down to 79 million which is a drop but not that much of a drop. So all this essentially means is that RIM is going into the BB10 launch with lots of cash in the bank and lots of active users to upgrade to BB10
The press release also states that, as will come as no surprise, marketing expenditures in the next quarter will be significantly higher than previous quarters.
The investors call starts in 30 min at 5 pm est

Переслать - US Patent Office Rejects Apple's "Pinch to Zoom" Patent
Talk about a bad run for Apple recently in the idiotic patent wars. First they had the USPTO temporarily invalidating their patent on the "Rubber Band" effect and now the WSJ (via PhoneGap) is reporting that there is more bad news. The USPTO has also rejected, but not invalidated, Apple's famous "Pinch to Zoom" patent. I wonder what is next? Maybe "Slide to Unlock"? Either way it is nice to see yet another one of these overbearing patents loosing its teeth.
This all makes me wonder if Mark Cuban has the right idea with his new donation to the Electronic Frontier Foundation Patent Project "Mark Cuban Chair to Eliminate Stupid Patents"…

Переслать - RIM, Apple, & Google in Group to Buy Kodak's Patents
RIM joined in with a group of other companies including Google and Apple to buy certain patents from Eastman Kodak Co for about $525 million. Bloomberg broke the news about the group led by Intellectual Ventures Management and RPX Corp along with 12 patent licensees. Facebook, Microsoft Amazon, Fujifilm, Adobe, and more were also involved though this was not for the full portfolio. Kodak needs the money to get out of bankruptcy. Check out the details here. Hopefully this means the end of RIM’s patent trouble with Kodak even though Kodak kept on getting their patents invalidated.
