- Ka-Glom HD Now Available for PlayBook!
For all of you old school BlackBerry gamers out there, you know Ka-Glom almost as well as you know BrickBreaker. Its an addicting action puzzle game similar to Tetris with a hint of Dr. Mario. Attached groups of different combinations of jelly (explosive) and blocks (non explosive) drop from the top of the screen. The ones on deck are shown in the top right of the screen. Move and rotate until the jelly connects with 3 others of the same color then…KA-GLOM!!! The jelly blocks explode taking blocks of the same color with them. You can get some crazy chain reactions and really rack up your score with multipliers.
There is a free version available for BlackBerry Smartphones running OS 6 and lower. If you're on OS 7, you'll have to throw down $0.99 to get your Ka-Glom on.
BlackBerry Smartphone Free Version OS 5 and 6 Only
BlackBerry Smartphone $0.99 Version OS 5, 6 and 7
I hope this is the beginning of a trend of classic games being released for the PlayBook. I'm hoping for a Meteor Crusher refresh. That is one of my all time favorite games which has mysteriously disappeared from the face of the earth. At one point I was 4th in the world…I swear I was! I really wish I had Screen Muncher back then.
Sniff sniff. Come back to us Meteor Crusher!

Переслать - Video: Don Lindsay Further Explains and Demonstrates Peek and Flow
I am in awe of this feature of BlackBerry 10. It is so simple and so smooth and so intuitive and so genius! Peek and Flow are an awesome revolution of BlackBerry's 'always on' quality. Don Lindsay, who is the Vice President of User Experience Design does a great job of explaining the concepts using a few examples shown in slides behind him. BB10 is making iOS look tired and horribly inefficient. Check out the video below and let us know if it 'peeks' your interest.

The Inside BlackBerry For Business Blog has published some more detailed information on Balance for BB10 in an article titled "Balancing Work and Personal Life with BlackBerry 10: The Guide for Business Professionals and IT Administrators". Specific details on keeping work files separate, separate wallpapers, specific controls for network routing on work and personal sides, and more really show the extent to which RIM has gone to provide this service and keep IT admins happy.

Переслать - RIM Expands BlackBerry Academic Program to Nigeria
Yaba College of Technology joins global BlackBerry education program, supporting young mobile developers in Nigeria
September 25 2012: Lagos, Nigeria – Research In Motion (RIM) the maker of BlackBerry® smartphones and BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablets, today announced it is launching the BlackBerry® Academic Program in Nigeria. The Yaba College of Technology, a leading Nigerian tertiary institution based in Lagos, is introducing the free-to-use BlackBerry resources to their students, joining a worldwide program that includes nearly 700 institutions in more than 113 countries.
Robert Bose, Regional Managing Director for Africa and the Middle East said, "Nigerians are a very important part of our global developer community so we are very excited to announce the Yaba College of Technology is joining the BlackBerry Academic Program. As part of our commitment to the Nigerian market, and the Nigerian government's ICT initiatives, this underlines our strategic aim to support the future generation of mobile software developers, and to help create new jobs in this country. We also extend the invitation to more universities here in Nigeria to become part of this global network."
The BlackBerry Academic Program, which is available to tertiary institutions and students throughout Nigeria and around the world, gives educators access to the latest teaching resources and BlackBerry technologies, equipping students with the knowledge and practical hands-on experience to enhance their development skills and create apps.
Dr. (Mrs.) Margaret Kudi Ladipo, Rector of Yaba College of Technology said, "We are proud to be one of the first institutions in Nigeria to officially sign up to the BlackBerry Academic Program. The mobile market, specifically app development, presents infinite opportunities for the future generation of Nigerians. Together with RIM, the BlackBerry Academic Program will help Yaba College equip our students with new skills and knowledge that will enable them to take advantage of the local and global opportunities available on the BlackBerry platform, a leading platform in the mobile market."
Students at a number of universities in Nigeria are already benefiting from access to the tools and resources of BlackBerry Academic Program through the web, including individuals at the Lagos State University, the Federal University of Technology Akure, Ekiti State University and Babcock University. In addition a large number of independent students are making use of program's resources for the purpose of self-study.
Robert Bose added, "Today, staff and students in more than 100 institutions across Africa are using BlackBerry academic resources to prepare students embarking on careers and starting businesses in the fast growing mobile computing sector. As the leading smartphone vendor in Nigeria and across Africa, we believe that providing access to knowledge, skills and technology will help digital entrepreneurs take advantage of our smartphone market leadership in Africa, and reach over 78 million BlackBerry customers globally through the BlackBerry App World storefront."
RIM is the smartphone market leader in Nigeria and South Africa, and according to researcher Canalys (Canalys Smartphone Data, Q2 2012), RIM is the number 1 smartphone vendor in Africa overall. BlackBerry continues to grow from strength to strength in Africa and both the BlackBerry® 7 OS and upcoming BlackBerry® 10 platform, represent a huge opportunity for African mobile developers. Later today at BlackBerry® Jam Americas 2012 in San Jose, California, RIM will reveal the bold, new direction BlackBerry is heading with BlackBerry 10.
In addition to the BlackBerry Academic Program, RIM is already supporting the Nigerian developer community in a number of ways. Recently, RIM brought the BlackBerry® 10 Jam World Tour to Lagos, where over 70 developers learned about developing for BlackBerry 10. The next BlackBerry 10 developer presentation is being held at the AppGig event at NigeriaCom on Thursday 27th September at the Eko Hotel & Suite, Kuramo Waters, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Nigerian developers are already successfully creating local apps and content on the BlackBerry platform, which are available on BlackBerry App World™. These include the Nigerian Constitution App, by Pledge51 for access to important constitutional information, SeeAm, to find the location of all ATMs throughout Nigeria and the EssentialApp, a free-to-download BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) integrated app that provides a useful guide for entertainment and day-to-day life in Nigeria. Hear more from Nigerian developers here about why they develop for BlackBerry.

Переслать - The $600 PlayBook App. Can I Get Some Reviews Please?
I sincerely hope this was a decimal placement mistake. While searching for a different app in App World I found this amazing app that professes to teach you the "perfect and correct golf swing and golf shots to play solid golf and even become a pro!" $600 is actually a very fair price to pay for a perfect golf swing and the possibility of going pro. Since I'd rather buy a new laptop than become a golf pro (I just don't have the time), I haven't downloaded the app yet. Everyone out there that has this app already, (I'm talking to you Brandt Snedeker, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods) please let us know how things are going and how Perfect Golf Pro helped you perfect your swing and become a pro.
I have contacted the developer in hopes of getting more information about the app and what plans are in store for v2. I can't wait!

Переслать - BlackBerry Balance On BB10: Separate, Simultaneously-Active Profiles For Work And Play
Yesterday I had a hands-on demo of some of the newest features of BB10. Jeff Gadway, Senior Brand & Marketing Communications Manager at Research In Motion, showed off some of the changes implemented since BlackBerry World, including an updated BlackBerry Balance for BB10.
BlackBerry Balance, if you're not familiar with the product, is RIM's enterprise solution for managing personal devices on corporate BES. It separates personal data from corporate data, allowing the BES admins to remotely manage and/or wipe the secure "work" partition while leaving the end user's personal data intact. This is a decent solution for balancing the user's desire for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) with the company's desire for security and control over corporate data, as more and more companies cut back on providing and paying for deployed devices to their employees.
Taking this concept into BB10, however, provides a much more elegant solution. In BB10, Balance will consist of two separate, but simultaneously-active profiles. Both profiles will be accessible at any time with a simple down-swipe from the top of the screen. Open the Work profile, launch the browser, and the browser opens with a lock icon to let you know that IT policy has been applied to your browsing session. Swipe down, go into the Personal profile, launch the browser, and it opens with no lock icon. Switch back to the Work profile, and the secure browser session is till there. Notice that nothing has been quit or exited. One thing merely flows into the next on BB10, even when being kept separate, and that's the experience that RIM is betting on.

Переслать - BlackBerry Hub: BB10's Unified Communications Inbox
The core of BlackBerry 10's experience is called the BlackBerry Hub. The Hub is a unified repository for communications. The Hub is always available with a simple gesture, from anywhere in BB10, at any time. It's the next evolution of the "Always On" concept RIM pioneered. Email, txt, BBM, calendar, media, social networks, all accessible by a single gesture. You don't need to think about what app you need to open, it's just there. You can peek at it, slide into the item for more detail, and continue to dig deeper into contact info, all without launching a single app. No more Home button. No more in-and-out of different apps. Just Flow.

Переслать - RIM Also Details Updates to BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK & Android Runtime
RIM laid out the updates to the BlackBerry 10 Native SDK with Cascades and now they are on to WebWorks and the Android Runtime. Переслать - Facebook Demos App For BB10 Launch
According to Alec Saunders of RIM, 80% of BlackBerry users access their social networks every day. In today's keynote presentation at BlackBerry Jam Americas, Facebook took the stage to show off their launch-ready BB10 Facebook app. The app integrates with the Hub, allowing instant access and response to Facebook notifications, and making extensive use of the Peek and Flow functionality built into the BB10 UI. This includes seamless drill-down. From the notification, a BB10 user can Peek at it, and decide whether or not to act. If they choose to act, they can complete the gesture and Flow directly into the Facebook function to respond, using the BB10 predictive keyboard (see screenshots),or they can drill down to contact info and access any other feature or method of communication with that individual.
Understand that some of the screenshots are blurry because they are actually in motion as the Facebook rep flows from function to function without exiting or switching app.

Переслать - Need for Speed Undercover for PlayBook Updated to Version 2.3
I don't know why I always get so excited about upgrades like this but I always hope for new levels or challenges. Maybe the ability to unlock the QNX Concept car? But time and time again, I am left starting the game up and noticing absolutely nothing different. As you can see above, it was updated from version 2.2 to 2.3. I'm guessing it was simply for compatibility reasons for that 1MB OS patch many PB users have been getting. I don't know.
Anyway, if anyone has the patience to comb through the game and look for new goodies, please do and come back and let us know!
Maybe they'll jump to version 3.0 for BlackBerry 10 compatibility? I did have to reboot my PlayBook after I upgraded in order for the game to even start. Keep that in mind when you're watching the green download bar fill up those 299 MB.
Changelog anyone?
If you don't have this game yet, it is highly recommended. It was the flagship game when the PlayBook was first released and continues to be my kids' go to game. Go grab it, or upgrade it in App World here.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Browser Built Using Web Technology (HTML5/CSS/JavaScript)
We knew that RIM was revamping the BlackBerry 10 Browser since the PlayBook version was built in AIR but this came out of nowhere. Matthew Staikos @RIM was showing off the new industry leading BlackBerry 10 browser (with the highest score on HTML5Test of ALL browsers) and it was quite impressive. The browser was very fast but what really surprised me was his announcement at the end. The BlackBerry 10 browser app is built using HTML5 technologies not native or Cascades. That means it is built using HTML, JavaScript, & CSS and it works beautifully and looks exactly like a native app.
Impressive… Can't wait to try it on my Dev Alpha

Переслать - RIM Roadmap Confirms Bluetooth 4.0 Support in BlackBerry 10
This one slipped under my radar but Phil thankfully pointed it out. In their detailing of the latest BlackBerry 10 native SDK they mentioned the additional support of new Bluetooth profiles and APIs. One of the profiles they mentioned is Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) along with Serial Port Profile (SPP) and Generic Attribute Profile (GATT). Bluetooth Low Energy is a really cool profile that allows for low power Bluetooth devices but requires Bluetooth 4.0. I guess that means RIM is confirming Bluetooth 4.0 in BlackBerry 10!

Переслать - RIM Details Features of BlackBerry 10 Native SDK Update
We are getting a new Native SDK today but RIM has been kind enough to detail what new features are coming today. There are some whoppers in here including my favorite which is Cards. It allows deep integration between apps to call up functionality from another app within your app. Developers can also create their own cards beyond RIM's so this is truly extensible. In other words you can have a file manager that pulls up a card for a picture editor or video viewer. You can slide in the card like Cascades and it looks beautiful.
RIM is also adding the BBM social Platform, Email, Calendar, Contacts, Advertising, Push, and many more features. Check out all the explanation on the BlackBerry DevBlog.

RIM showed off the new BlackBerry 10 App World that will be coming with the Dev Alpha beta today. They also announced that App World now has 105,000+ apps on App World available combined. They have also combined the music and video store into the app so you can now do everything from one place. The payments system does not work yet in the beta but submissions are open now and then will officially accept submissions on October 10th. (Get that it will open on 10/10). Переслать - Introducing The BB10 Dev Alpha B
RIM has been very busy courting the developer community to get them interested in BB10. At BlackBerry World in May, they handed out thousands of complimentary Dev Alpha devices to give registered BB10 developers a hands-on platform to experience the BB10 tools and environment first-hand. This proved to be so popular that RIM's supply of the devices vanished quickly, so they made a decision to build more. I give you the BB10 Dev Alpha B.
As you can see, the device is slightly different from the original Dev Alpha, and I'm told there are very minor hardware differences. Though I'm sure it wasn't their intention, it seems like there were definite efforts to make sure this was not a "black slab with rounded corners." Registered developers at BB Jam Americas will receive one to take home. I expect to have more hands-on time with the device later this week, and I'll post anything new that I find out.

Переслать - RIM Announces BlackBerry Subscriber Growth to 80 Million Users
Analysts assumed that RIM would announce zero subscriber growth this quarter but it looks like RIM did add 2 million new net subscribers. Thorsten Heins announced that there are now 80 million BlackBerry user out there. That is up from 78 million during their last financial update. Hopefully BlackBerry 10 can turn the tide on this slowing growth rate and make it grow exponentially in 2013.

There are separate App Worlds along with different backgrounds and apps. Thorsten Heins said that BlackBerry 10 is not about isolation but conversation and engaging with the world around you and not shutting it out. This version of BlackBerry 10 seems to be a way more effective way than the current sandboxing approaches current companies use.
