- Pacemaker DJ App Updated to v1.2.0.4 for the BlackBerry PlayBook
The awesome Pacemaker DJ beat matching app just got a nice update to v1.2.0.4 this week. The Lite version does not seem to be updated but the pro version did get the update. From what I can tell this version added ACC (.mp4) file attachment and audio support which is the format for iTunes. Let us know if you spot anything else.
You can find Pacemaker in App World here and a free trial here. More info about the capabilities is available at pacemaker.net.

Переслать - XIMAD Adds New free Level Packs to Glutton Xonix
XIMAD calls Glutton Xonix a Xonix game but I like to think of it as a classic Jezzball style game. I have been using Bix as my Jezzball fix but Glutton Xonix is another option. In case you don't remember Jezzball from back in the day then here is a quick explanation. You essentially have to dodge the bouncing balls while containing them in smaller and smaller areas. XIMAD let us know that they have updated their free Glutton Xonix game for BlackBerry smartphones with 8 new free level packs that get increasingly difficult.
Check out Glutton Xonix in App World.

Переслать - Steep Discounts on OtterBox Cases for BlackBerry 7 Devices @Amazon
My OtterBox Commuter case for the Bold 9900 is getting a bit worn so I was happy to see that there are some solid OtterBox sales on Amazon. DanielH pointed out in the forums that there are some steep discounts on BlackBerry OtterBox cases on Amazon through a variety of vendors. Most I have seen are at least 50%+ off retail which is a pretty good deal with a few more months going until BlackBerry 10. I picked up a commuter series hybrid case for $14.99 shipped.
Check out some of the other deals for OtterBox cases on Amazon and let me know what you find!

Переслать - Entertaining Rune Raiders Comes to the PlayBook
Another solid game that is now available for the PlayBook thanks to the NME framework is Rune Raiders. Retro64 has released the game on App World and I have to say I am impressed. You move around your characters with your finger and when you let go them come alive and attack. The gameplay is easy to pick up and the developers have a good sense of humor.
Check out Rune Raiders for $2.99 in App World. Check out the gameplay in the trailer below:

Переслать - Going to BlackBerry Jam Americas? Suggest a Topic for Unconference Day
RIM is once again running a Unconference Day at BlackBerry Jam San Jose. They started the tradition this year at the first BlackBerry 10 Jam and it seems like the concept is working. They are asking developers who are coming to BlackBerry Jam San Jose to submit session topics in two categories. Either the session can be taught by RIM experts or if you are an expert you can teach it yourself. They have openings for eight sessions (4 by RIM experts, 4 by community experts) so send in your submissions.
You can propose topics until September 14th on Twitter, Facebook, or their post announcing the Unconference Day. If it is a tweet make sure to include @BlackBerryDev and the #BBUnconference hashtag.

Переслать - Free Texas Hold'em King Live Updated to v1.2
Magmic has updated their hugely popular Texas Hold'em King Live poker game for BlackBerry smartphones. The new update does not have a change log but hopefully it fixes some of the server issues. Matt @BBCool also heard that this version adds support for the 9920, 9220, 9320, and 9360. It also supposedly changes the free chip daily lottery to cross promote with Slots King. Переслать - Dev Community Ports BlackBerry 10 WebWorks Packager to Linux
The grassroots effort RIM is raising in the developer community is really paying off. The latest example is a community developed port of the BlackBerry 10 WebWorks Packager for Linux. This is a port of the current 1.0.1.17 SDK that is available for Mac and Windows with tweaks to make it work on Linux. Since RIM does have a native SDK or Linux (which it is rereleasing) I am hoping they will look at the changes the community has made to bring official support to Linux.
Check out the post on BBOS announcing the port of BlackBerry 10 WebWorks packager for Linux. You can find the full source in GitHub and the download also at BBOS.

Переслать - Download the Toronto International Film Festival BlackBerry App
Those of you up north are probably aware that the Toronto International Film Festival is going on in RIM's backyard. RIM is still present at the events and according to the Toronto Sun (via N4BB) they have a nice sponsored booth there. There is also an official BlackBerry smartphone app for the film festival which you can pick up in App World. Sadly the app does not allow you to purchase tickets from inside the app but that is not available on any platform.
Let us know if you are at TIFF!

Переслать - Devs: RIM Suggests Porting Adobe AIR to Native Speed Using NME (Without C/C++)
I had never heard of NME before Joshua Granick mentioned it on the official DevBlog. NME is a cross platform framework for developing games and applications which using a language called Haxe to convert your code to C++ and OpenGL. From what I am reading Haxe is similar to Actionscript, JavaScript, and comparable languages. The best part is that it offers practically comparable speed to native C/C++ code without having to write in C/C++. It also allows you to export to Adobe Flash and HTML5 so you have all your bases covered.
If this sounds interesting to you then I recommend checking out Joshua Granick's writeup on the DevBlog and checking out NME free for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 To Have More Apps Than Any Other 1st Generation OS
As reported to CNET, RIM VP of Developer Relations Alec Saunders says that RIM expects BlackBerry 10 to launch with more apps than any other first generation operating system. Considering the importance that apps have on consumer decisions, this is obviously intended to be a good selling point for RIM as it readies to launch its new product line. On the other hand, it’s hard to see how significant this bragging right really is.
Apple’s iOS and Google Android both launched years ahead of BlackBerry 10. So, this race which RIM may well be winning – of having most apps at launch – is essentially a race between BlackBerry in 2013, Windows Phone OS in 2010, Android in 2009 and iOS in 2007. While it’s certainly good that RIM will be winning this race, it’s a bit hard to see what kind of importance the race actually has.
Of course the good news is that RIM is finally seeing – like its consumers – that the key to relevance in the mobile market is apps. This app-titude can only reflect positively on the future of RIM. The thing is I hope RIM hones in on the key 100 apps that users are expecting and makes sure they launch on BlackBerry 10 at launch.

Переслать - HTC Statement Leaves Door Open to Licensing BlackBerry 10
It is no secret that HTC, once the darling of Android and smartphone manufacturers, is experiencing difficult times. Samsung is wiping the floor with them in the Android marketplace where differentiation is critical but difficult to achieve. In a recent interview with Mobile Today, HTC's director of product management for EMEA said this when asked about licensing BlackBerry 10:
"I don’t have any knowledge but that is not to say we are not looking at it. But from my point of view we are not saying we are closed to a new operating system. We will review each one to make sure it’s the best for our customers."
We have heard many rumors and denials about Samsung licensing BlackBerry 10 but even RIM said they are not really vying for it until they launch their own BlackBerry 10 devices. Still it would be interesting to see possibly trying their hand at BlackBerry devices though that would lose the tight integration of software and hardware RIM is known for. What do you think?
