Переслать - BlackBerry 10: Innovate Then Wait
I don’t know about all of you, but I have been thoroughly enjoying every minute of the #ios6pocalypse on twitter. With the release of the iPhone 5 and iOS 6, Apple fans everywhere have been scrambling to get the latest and greatest hardware and software “to make the things you do every day even better.” Judging by the maps fiasco, the suspicion over the iPad clock being a rip-off of a Swiss clock design, and most recently Scuffgate, maybe Apple should have waited just a bit longer before they “innovated.”
I came across an interesting article from the NYTimes that shows some of the new features of the BB10 alpha device are also found on the iPhone 5. Probably nothing to sue over but the writer, Ian Austen, hints that features like: a more movie friendly screen, a faster processor, a slim black case, and two tiny grills that shield noise cancelling microphones are features that BB showcased first. I know, I know, just because they showed them off first, doesn’t mean Apple copied them. I simply found it interesting that the comparison was made. Those all seem like pretty generic features anyway.
Austen went on to explain how RIM innovated first, then waited as Apple moved forward with production, and sales. Apple has become masterful at making the masses believe that features like panoramic shooting, faux multitasking, and voice commands are the latest and greatest technological marvels when, in fact, they have been around for years in some cases. The Apple marketing machine is truly astounding and we all know how successful they have been as a result.
So what do you think? We still don’t have a firm date for the BlackBerry 10 launch but the hardware and software are looking like they could be the slumpbuster we have been waiting for. Has RIM waited too long to show the world what BB10 can do? I’m looking forward to what RIM decides to show us at BlackBerry Jam Americas this week.

Переслать - Possible BlackBerry 10 3rd Party Battery Door Caught on Camera
The latest rumor to hit the mill has RIM working with their "Built for BlackBerry" accessory makers to develop custom battery doors for BlackBerry 10 devices. RIM has already confirmed that BlackBerry 10 devices will keep their removable battery doors so its nice to see accessory makers already working on options. This picture spotted by BBIN.in is of a rubberized battery door fo the L series devices. This is all a rumor for now but I am already wondering if 3rd party battery doors will have support for NFC…

Переслать - "One Touch, One Finger" Is How Thorsten Heins Describes BlackBerry 10 Usability
Its days like this that I wish I could understand Italian. Paul let us know that Corriere Della Sera had an interview with RIM CEO Thorsten Heins where he talked about RIM and BlackBerry 10. One of the most interesting quotes he used was calling the BlackBerry 10 experience "One hand, one finger" in explaining the "incredible ease of use" of the OS. It has been designed to be used with one hand using one finger. Its sort of a nice simplification of the "BlackBerry Flow" concept RIM has been using as a description for BlackBerry 10 usability.
Check out the full interview in Italian here and let us know if you understand more of it!

Переслать - Rumour: BlackBerry R Series will follow L and N Series
Last night among beers with friends, some who recently have left RIM, the R series device was mention. They said it will be the Curve line for BlackBerry 10 devices, and what they believe will help bring BlackBerry 10 in to many hands with the mid market device. No specification were mentioned whether device was (qwerty or full touch), but they said it will be brought to market around May of 2013. With that said it does make sense since RIM has previously mentioned that they will bring around six different devices to market throughout the year. Some of the tidbits of information is that this device is intended for mid level users the device is one of those that should sell well. RIM usually hosts their BlackBerry World in Orlando and the 2013 is scheduled for May 14-16.
We are hopping to get more information soon on this device…

Переслать - Thorsten Heins Says BlackBerry 10 To Roll Out in 3 Waves
RIM's CEO Thorsten Heins is on a tour before BlackBerry Jam with his latest stop being South Africa. In an exclusive interview with Gadget.co.za Thorsten Heins told them that BlackBerry 10 will be rolling out in three waves. RIM plans on hitting global markets with these three waves and currently has South Africa and Nigeria both on the first wave to "pay tribute" for them remaining loyal customers.
Customers in South Africa and other countries appreciate BlackBerrys due to the low data usage and high costs of data. Heins once again reiterated his former stance on the current state in North America including:
"The market in the USA was driven by a tectonic shift to full touch screens and to LTE (4G connectivity) in a very short time frame in the enterprise space. All the money from the carriers is going to 4G. That is why we have lost and are still losing market share… There are two routes to recapturing that market. Firstly, we are working on our installed user base. So far the upgrade ratio has increased from 8% to 22% in the last two quarters… The second thing is to get Blackberry 10 into the market and make sure it fulfills all users' requirements, such as the full LTE experience."

Переслать - Samsung Starts Mass Producing 128GB Flash Memory for 2013 Phones
It hard to believe that it has been almost 5 years sin ce vendors started introducing 64GB devices. Over the years vendors including RIM have been making devices in standard 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB flavors. Now it looks like we will finally start seeing 128GB devices. One of the leading flash memory manufacturers, Samsung, has announced that they have started mass producing 128GB memory eMMC NAND memory chips. These chips get a whopping 140MB/s read and 50MB/s write speeds and fit in the same slim size as the previous 64GB and lower chips.

Переслать - Thorsten Heins Apologizes for Today's Outage in EMEA
Now that the outage we told you about is over in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East it is nice to see RIM following up. RIM's CEO and President, Thorsten Heins, put out a statement apologizing for the outage today. Heins confirmed that the outage lasted up to 3 hours and up to 6% of BlackBerry users were affected. Here is his statement:
"I want to apologize to those BlackBerry customers in Europe and Africa who experienced an impact in their quality of service earlier this morning. The BlackBerry service is now fully restored and I can report that no data or messages were lost. Up to 6 per cent of our user base may have been impacted. Preliminary analysis suggests that those customers may have experienced a maximum delay of 3 hours in the delivery and reception of their messages. We are conducting a full technical analysis of this quality of service issue and will report as soon as it concludes. I again want to apologize to those customers who were impacted today."
We will let you know how things develop.

Переслать - WordClock for BlackBerry. Sleek Clock App
Trevor let us know about his new app called WordClock. It gives you another option other than the standard clock faces that come with the clock app. Instead of numbers, only text is displayed and highlighted on a static grid. As you can see in the chart above, the free version is limited to the black theme and no other options. For $1.99 you can unlock more themes and options, including the ability to automatically start the app when charging. If you’re wondering how to change the color theme on the paid version, simply swipe the trackpad or touchscreen to the left or right.
I think the app looks very cool. Don't expect exact times though, as the display only changes every five minutes. That's the cool way to tell time anyway though right? Rather than saying, "it's twelve thirty two," WordClock makes sure you're using sexytime.
"It is half past noon."
Case closed.
UPDATE: I just noticed that you can, in fact, tell the exact time using this nifty little app. There are 4 dots in each corner of the screen. At intervals of 5 minutes (2:00, 2:05, 2:10, etc) none of the dots are lit up. Each of the dots represents one of the 4 minutes in between each interval. I thought this was a nice little detail. So if the time is 2:06, it would say, “It is five past two o’clock,” and one of the 4 dots would be lit up. Awesome.
Pick up the free version of WordClock at App World.

Переслать - RIM Confirms Short UK Outage Is Over (Vodafone Specific?)
It seems like Vodafone users in the UK and elsewhere in Europe were having BIS issues earlier this morning. From what we are hearing it seems like the outage is over and was caused by an upgrade/maintenance gone bad. I was not aware of maintenance happening in EMEA today since there is a window scheduled for tomorrow and another for the 29th to upgrade the BlackBerry Provisioning System to 10.1 for BlackBerry 10.
Here is the statement RIM originally sent out to confirm the issue: (via CrackBerry)
"We are currently experiencing a BlackBerry service issue impacting some users in Europe, Middle East & Africa. All relevant support teams are working to resolve the issue. We apologize to any customers who may be affected."
And their follow up confirming the outage is over: (via N4BB)
"Our apologies to any customers impacted by the BlackBerry service issue today. We can confirm that services have been restored and are now operating normally."
Hopefully RIM will get the updates out easily this weekend and next. Here is a summary of what they are doing:
BlackBerry support teams will be using this time to upgrade the BlackBerry Provisioning System to version 10.1 which is a continuation of support for the upcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system (OS).

Переслать - RIM Responds to iPhone 4S Hackers Claims at Pwn2Own
We told you yesterday about a group of Dutch security researchers from Certified Secure who hacked the iPhone 4S and IOS. They used a WebKit exploit by stringing along a zero day vulnerability along with a few other techniques to access the address book, contacts, photos, videos, and browsing history of any user who visited the website. This exploit worked in iOS 5 and the iOS 6 Gold Master beta and also works on the iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone 4. These same security researchers then went on to say that BlackBerry devices are much easier security targets than the iPhone or even Android.
I doubted their claims due to lack of any proof but decided to reach out to Adrian Stone, RIM's Director of BlackBerry Security Response, for a statement. Here is the official statement we received:
"Mobile Pwn2Own provides a safe environment for researchers to demonstrate their work and a valuable opportunity to collaborate with the security community. RIM products are designed, manufactured and supported by a robust security architecture that helps protect our customers and their information. By using a multi-layered approach to security, the BlackBerry platform offers customers industry-leading, third-party certifications, advanced encryption, 24/7 security response team and unparalleled enterprise management capabilities. As the mobile threat landscape evolves, our unwavering commitment to end-to-end security and innovative research will ensure we continue to provide the unique level of protection our customers have come to rely upon."
While it is not a resounding "no the BlackBerry browser is secure" it goes to show that RIM is actively engaging security researchers. They even sponsored the Pwn2Own event that led to this hack being unveiled. RIM has been bitten by WebKit open source browser vulnerabilities in the past so it could be that we will see OS updates rolling out for it shortly. Either way I am very curious to see what security features RIM is baking into BlackBerry 10 to ensure they are ready for the next 10 years of threats.
