Переслать - App World Wednesday: Carry a Library in Your Pocket with These Apps
For most of the world, fall means temperatures are dropping and you're spending more time wrapped in a blanket next to a crackling furnace. So what's an active BlackBerry ® person to do? Check out a book from a virtual library with one of these apps. These apps not only save you the hassle of traveling to the library or bookstore, but they also allow you to read books right from your BlackBerry ® PlayBook ™ tablet.
Let's check out these awesome literary apps:
Book Reader for EPUB by Untangled Development: The Book Reader app allows you to manage and read e-books on your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. With this app, you can swipe to turn pages and highlight text, bringing you closer to the feel of a "real book". The app also remembers your place and returns you to that spot when it's re-launched.
OverDrive Media Console by Overdrive: OverDrive Media Console gives you on-the-go access to e-books and audiobooks from more than 18,000 libraries worldwide, with available titles ranging from best-sellers to the more obscure. OverDrive Media Console gives you a real library experience, allowing you to check out books that expire automatically at the end of the lending period.
100,000 Free Books Wattpad by WP Technology Inc.: Wattpad offers more than 100,000 free e-books, from novels to poetry. What's also cool about this app is the huge amount of both older and newer content available, so you can go from the original Dracula to the latest book about sparkly vampires—all with just a swipe.
Play-A-Book by Spinaker Multimedia: Play-a-Book is an app designed to read audio books to you, playback downloaded Podcasts, or play .mp3 files through your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. For the visually impaired or in bright/dim light, this app can be especially handy.
BONUS: My Next Book by JB Inc.: While not an actual reading app, My Next Book allows you to enter an author name or book title and get recommendations based on your preferences. The app also includes links to more information and purchase details for recommended titles.
Are you reading books on your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet? Have you used any of these apps? Share your feedback – along with feedback on any other apps you're using – in the comments below!
Переслать - Mobile Life Part 2 – The Tablet Habit
We recently took a look at U.S. consumer mobility trends of smartphone usage. Today I'd like to switch gears to focus on mobility trends with regard to tablet usage. Data shows that people use tablets for games, as a social tool, as e-readers, or a combination of all three. So how does your tablet usage compare?
Let's dive in to some fun tablet stats to see how your tablet habit compares with that of your friends and neighbors:
- 25 percent of smartphone owners also use a tablet.
- The average tablet user spends 90 minutes on their tablet every day.
- Over 60 percent of tablet owners use their tablet for at least 2 hours per day, and 11 percent say they use their tablet "constantly."
- 80 percent of tablet users say that tablets have improved their work/life balance.
- 70 percent of tablet owners play games on their device. (I'll raise my hand for this one, as I'm a frequent gamer on my BlackBerry ® PlayBook ™ tablet. Madden NFL 12, anyone?)
- 60 percent of tablet owners use their device to read e-books. With larger screens than smartphones and a nearly unlimited supply of books, the ability to curl up with a good (electronic) book is becoming increasingly popular on tablets.
- 34 percent of tablet owners use their tablets for shopping during the weekends. 46 percent of those said they would turn to a competitor's website instead if they had a poor tablet shopping experience.
- 35 percent of tablet owners say they have used them in the bathroom. Now that's just gross.

If you have a tablet habit, I'd like to hear your thoughts about why you own a tablet and, if so, how and why you use it. Feel free to share, comment, and submit questions in the comment section below.
Переслать - Five Tip Friday – Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones
If you have a BlackBerry® smartphone and a Facebook® page, chances are you also use the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones app. (It even got an awesome new upgrade yesterday!) After talking with my friends, most of them tell me it's the most frequently-used app on their device and the primary way they access Facebook. Today I've put together some of my favorite tips that I share with friends when I'm asked about the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones app.
Before we begin, if you don't have Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones installed currently, open the BlackBerry App World™ storefront on your device, press the Menu key, select "Scan a Barcode" and scan this code to get it installed:
1. Receive Notifications in the Messages App
Let's get things started with my favorite tip: integrating your Facebook notifications with the Message app on your BlackBerry smartphone. Having my Facebook notifications appear in the messages app allows me to check them, send them via email, share them using BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) and more all in one place. If I have a Facebook notification I want to read, I can simply select it and Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones opens to display the content.

Переслать - Replace Access Badges with BlackBerry Smartphones: HID Launches New Secure Identity Services for Enterprise
It's no secret that we love Near Field Communication (NFC). What's exciting at this point is watching some of the use cases come to fruition, and today in particular, the ability to replace security access badges with BlackBerry® smartphones. NFC is an innovative technology with many stakeholders and interested parties including enterprise customers, end users, financial institutions, carriers, and of course smartphone manufacturers. BlackBerry smartphones have been leading the way in mobile payments for some time, becoming the first smartphones to be certified by MasterCard® and Visa® for NFC-based payments, and now we're first to be available as an access badge replacement solution. "RIM has proven to be a leader in NFC technology, and in bringing NFC solutions to market – we spearheaded the efforts in mobile payments. Now we are taking NFC beyond payments into the enterprise sector and partnering with HID Global®, an industry leader in physical access solutions" says Geoff MacGillivray, RIM Sr. Product Manager for NFC.
Late last week HID Global announced the availability of Secure Identity Services™, a comprehensive suite of web-based services for managing physical access credentials (read the HID press release for more info). Secure Identity Services is the enterprise's first all-in-one web-based solution for credential provisioning and management. The platform provides businesses with the tools to create, use, and manage identities for traditional badges on plastic cards, for tokens, and for digital credentials on NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphones beginning with models on the Verizon Wireless network: the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9930 and the BlackBerry® Curve™ 9370.

Переслать - App World Wednesday: Avoid Fashion Flubs with These 5 Apps
Even though I don't consider myself a "fashionista," it's hard not to get swept up in the frenzy of fashion-forward designers descending on Montreal and New York City for Fashion Week. But will beautiful people in beautiful clothes give a denim-clad mobile-device aficionado like me aspirations to be the Next Top Model? Sadly, no. Regardless, here are five BlackBerry ® smartphone apps that might just bring us all one step closer to the runway:
Trendstop Fashion TrendTracker by Amoja Limited: Trendstop Fashion TrendTracker is a veritable fashion toolbox that provides insight into trends, shares the latest news, and suggests ideas on what to wear. Tons of pics from fashion shows around the globe may also inspire a new or updated look, and the app also allows social sharing on Facebook® and Twitter® so you can solicit ideas from your friends.
Vogue News by Condé Nast Publications Ltd.: It's a little-known fact that when fashion models are babies, "Vogue" is actually one of the first words they learn to say. A list of fashion apps without including Vogue News would be like wearing socks and sandals. Vogue News shares the latest news, trends, and people straight from the pages of Vogue.
Glamour Celebrity News by Condé Nast Publications Ltd.: Rounding out the one-two punch of magazines gone digital, Glamour Celebrity News gives you a peek into the fashion lives of celebrities such as actors and directors. There are plenty of images and tips to help anyone look like a star.
Fashion TV by 770 Prod: Providing the ultimate insider's guide, the Fashion TV BlackBerry app provides news on fashion shows, designer events, and Haute Couture parties from Paris to Montauk. If you're the kind of person who wants to be the first on their block to embrace the latest fashion trend, you need to have this app in your collection.
Fashion News Service by 360Fashion: Last but certainly not least on the list of fashion apps is the simply-named Fashion News Service. This little gem from 360Fashion shares opinions and sneak peeks from tastemakers and trendsetters inside the fashion industry. As an added bonus, Fashion News Service can be connected to BlackBerry ® Messenger (BBM ™) on BlackBerry ® 7 OS devices.
In the world of fashion, trends come and go so it's important to have the right apps to stay connected and "in the know." What's even cooler is that all of these apps are free, so there's really nothing stopping you from becoming a fashionista – except if you really do wear sandals with socks.
Have any of these apps helped you sharpen your fashion sense? Are there any apps you'd add to this list? Let us know in the comments!
Переслать - BlackBerry Apps for Runners Help Elevate Your Training, Lower Your Times
We're well into marathon training season and my wife and I are (trying to be) avid runners. We enjoy going for runs together and at meet-ups with our local running club. When just getting into the sport, the first few weeks are often the toughest, but once you commit, you'll start improving your times and pushing your endurance to new limits.
Since I'm also a gadget geek, I usually end up talking to other runners about the mobile devices and apps they use to keep track of their training, pace, and so on. My goal isn't to be the fastest runner, but I'm definitely focused on improvement. I wanted to share a few of my favorite BlackBerry ® device fitness apps that can help you to reach your running goals:
Endomondo Sports Tracker PRO by Endomondo – The paid version of this free app allows you to track your activity using the GPS in your BlackBerry ® smartphone, and also includes audio feedback. The free version is nicely robust, but for about the price of a cup of gourmet coffee you can review graphs of your performance and get help from the audio coach while you're working out.
runtastic PRO by runtastic GmbH – A second solid paid version of a more basic free app, runtastic PRO includes many of the same Sports Tracker PRO features, but includes a social media component allowing you to share your progress with your friends via Facebook® and Twitter®.
Fitness Tracker by Magra Systems – Probably the most basic (but least expensive) run tracker of these three is Fitness Tracker. Fitness Tracker tracks your run results, pace, and distance, but also catalogues your results and offers for more info on your training route. It’s a lightweight app, so you can listen to your music while running.
If you have any favorite fitness apps or thoughts on the apps I've shared, shout 'em out in the comments section. Let's get running!
