- RIM Patent Shows Off Pressure Sensitive Password Entry
I am not sure what to make to this latest patent to be approved by the USPTO. It is for a "Pressure password for a touchscreen device" and mostly describes unlocking your device by pushing down on certain areas. Here is how they describe it:
A handheld communication or computing device having a touchscreen interface is configured to permit access in response to detection of a pressure-based password by a plurality of force sensors, each one of the force sensors corresponding to one of a plurality of sensing regions defined on the surface of the touchscreen interface. Upon detecting a sequence of presses applied to a plurality of the force sensors, the detected sequence is compared to previously stored information to determine if it matches. If there is a match, access to functions and/or data at the device is granted.
I am not sure if this patent is more from the Storm days or something upcoming but it is interesting. I have been wondering how RIM was going to do the lock screen on the upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices. Personally I am loving the simplicity of the swipe gesture on the PlayBook and want something like that which can be done single handed. via USPTO via Engadget

Переслать - OnStar RemoteLink App Built Using HTML5 – Featured in Exclusive OCTiV Video
OnStar followed up with us about their launch of OnStar RemoteLink app for BlackBerry (App World). At launch it is limited to the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 but since it is an HTML5 app they planned on using it to bring the app to more devices and platforms. We even saw a demo of it on a PlayBook previously. When I asked them when it is coming to more BlackBerry models they responded saying that:
…since we built it on the HTML5 platform there is definitely opportunity for this to be available on more BlackBerry devices in the future but we currently don't have information on the next devices it will be available for.
OnStar also teamed up with Detroit music producer, OCTiV, to create an exclusive video featuring the RemoteLink app and several Chevrolet vehicles, including the 2012 Camaro. The original music score includes OnStar sounds and OCTiV's unique Dubstep sound, a subgenre of electronic dance music that originated in London, has been around since 1998, but has seen its greatest growth in the past few years. Check it out below:

Переслать - Inside BlackBerry Blog Introduces "Five Pic Friday"
RIM is definitely working hard on expanding their marketing and media presence. I’ve seen more BeBold commercials in the past month than I ever have in the entire 5 years I’ve been a BlackBerry subscriber, and more ads on tech sites as well. Alex Kinsella has had the Social Media team hard at work spreading the BlackBerry message, and their latest effort comes from the Inside BlackBerry blog in the form of Five Pic Friday. Every Friday, the team will choose five photos to feature, selected from thousands of Team BlackBerry submissions, including categories like Team BlackBerry Pets and BlackBerry Sunsets and Sunrises. There are some B-E-A-UTIFUL shots in these galleries, showcasing what BlackBerry fans can do with their so-called “boring, obsolete business phones that aren’t fun”, so go check ‘em out, and spread the word.
If I may, *ahem*, let me personally recommend the second pic on today’s inaugural post: my pretteh kitteh, Goldie, taken a few years ago on my Bold 9700. I think this shot is an excellent argument for having RIM bring back Black & White and Sepia options in the BB camera. What say you, RIM? How can you deny the cuteness that is my kitty? Bring back Sepia!

Переслать - BlackBerry Bold 9900 OS 7.1.0.437 Officially Released by China Unicom
China Unicom has made a bunch of BlackBerry Bold 9900 owners happy today with the launch of a new OS for the device. This brings OS 7.1.0.437 officially to the Bold 9900. Hopefully this fixes some of the calling issues I have been having with .402.
Download the OS from BlackBerry.com
Warning: This OS will NOT install on any other BlackBerry besides the one mentioned above. If you do not know how to upgrade your BlackBerry OS please start by reading this step by step guide. Don't forget to delete the vendor.xml file located in c:program files>common files>research in motion>apploader to install it on a different carriers device. Don't forget our usual warnings: do not download and install these updates if you don't know what you're doing. Incorrect procedure or just bad luck could render your BlackBerry inoperative or unstable.

Переслать - Free PrankCam Adds Funny Frames to Pictures As You Take Them (OS 7.0+)
Devcellent Solutions released a cool new free app called PrankCam for owners of BlackBerry 7 devices. The app allows you to overlay funny frames on pictures you take as you take them. For example you can add masks and more to pics. There are free packs built into the app along with more you can download for free or for a fee (that’s how they pay the rent). If I am not mistaken the reason this app is OS 7.0+ only is because that is the first OS RIM let devs overlay images over a camera field.
Check out PrankCam free in App World and share your pics if you get any good ones! Feel free to also send the dev tips on better prank frames for the app.

For those of you who have not yet checked out this application, you are in for a definite treat. Card2Contact is one of the must have business applications that I believe every BlackBerry owner should have. Personally I encounter many business cards per day and it is so easy just to stuff them in the bag, instead of adding them to the address book, creating myself issues later trying to find them. Fortunately Card2Contact has us covered.
I was fortunate to meet up with the developer at BlackBerry World 2012 and as a result he has graciously provided our readers with a promotion code. This code is available for the first 50 Berry Review readers to hop on board with 50 free scanning credits.
Some information directly from Card2Contact

“ Card2Contact will help you not to lose ANY contact. You can always stay connected and follow up with your contacts immediately.”
“ Card2Contact 3.0 release allows the users to see more information in the Contacts page such as browsing all the business cards they have uploaded, In app email feature to send emails to the contacts instantly while networking. ”
“Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNfNH5DWTvs&feature=player_embedded“
Now for the promo!
They have created the exclusive promo code ‘berryreview‘, which will provide 50 free credits the first 50 readers that use it. The promo code from the app will expire on May 30, 2012 and is first come first serve so hurry up!
How to get in on the promo ?

Переслать - Wunderlist Brings Their Cross Platform Task Manager to the PlayBook (Android)
Wunderlist was released for BlackBerry smartphones earlier this year and now it has come to the PlayBook courtesy of the Android player. In case you don't know Wunderlist is a free and easy to use task manager and todo list organizer. It also packs powerful features like cloud sync and multiplatform support with a free Wunderlist account.
Many users have already been sideloading the Wunderlist app onto the PlayBook but Adam @CrackBerry noticed that Wunderlist has released it themselves in App World for free. Hopefully they will see the demand and release a native client.

Переслать - Rumor: Heins Not Pursuing BBM Licensing & Cross Platform Clients
An always hot point of contention for BlackBerry users and former BlackBerry users was RIM potentially licensing BBM or creating their own cross platform clients for BBM. According to the latest rumor mill from the WSJ this project, unofficially dubbed "SMS 2.0" at RIM, has been put on the back burner. According to this source RIM's previous CEO's were pursuing licensing BBM which led to their private acquisition of LiveProfile last year.
Supposedly Thorsten Heins has ended the BBM push and decided RIM "should not pursue licensing deals in general." I am sort of glad that RIM has decided to not license BBM since that is one of their main strengths. They just need to keep on making it relevant and pushing the envelope especially with the launch of BB10.

Переслать - RIM EVP of Sales Patrick Spence Leaves After 14 Years
There is a definite change of the guard going on at RIM. A big chunk of the old RIM executive team is leaving or being shown the door while others are adapting to the new reality of Thorsten Heins and his vision for RIM. The latest to leave is RIM's EVP of Sales, Patrick Spence (@Patrick_Spence), who held the title for 10 months and has been at RIM for 14 years. His exit may also have to do with the new COO and CMO that RIM just hired.
Here is RIM's confirmation of Spence's departure:
I can confirm that Patrick Spence, Head of Global Sales for Research In Motion, has resigned following 14 years of service. Patrick will be taking on a leadership position in a different industry. The sales function will report directly into Kristian Tear, our newly appointed COO when he starts this summer. In the interim, the sales function will report to [CEO] Thorsten Heins.

Переслать - Cute and Cuddly Animal Rescue Memory Game for the PlayBook (Children)
There has been a growing trend in the mobile app industry to create games for kids. The latest I have spotted in Animal Rescue that Josef showed me on his PlayBook. The app is sort of like memory with a few changes to up the gameplay with cute and colorful adventures. In the game aliens have captured animals on earth for their private pet collection and kids need to match them one at a time to save them. The better they do the less time they have to do it in the future with some bonuses that will help along the way.

Переслать - Gelaskins: Ultra Thin Scratch Protection With Style
Ever since I saw Ronen’s Gelaskinned 9700, I was fascinated with the design, quality, and how the downloaded wallpaper flowed with the skin. Since we haven’t mentioned Gelaskins in almost a year, I wanted to make sure all of our readers are familiar with them.
Gelaskins are affordable, customizable, and a great way to make your device stand out in a crowd. The skin is a high quality, 3M removable/reusable sticker that is very easy to install and doesn’t leave any sticky residue behind. One of the coolest features is how you can download the matching wallpaper for your skin so it looks like it flows onto the background of your screen. I tried out the do it yourself feature for the first time recently and here’s the result:
It’s very easy to upload your own pictures or artwork and then arrange it just how you want it to appear on your skin.
Gelaskins are available for $14.95 for BlackBerry handset and $19.95 for your PlayBook.
Check em out and let us know what you get, or which one you already have!
