- RIM Licensing Part of BlackBerry 10 Camera Features from Scalado
I didn't put two and two together until Techcrunch confirmed that RIM's demo showing a "hint of the BlackBerry 10 Camera features" looked familiar. A company called Scalado has been doing it for awhile and demoing it on HTC Android devices with their Remove and Rewind technology. Techcrunch confirmed with RIM that they are licensing the technology from Scalado as part of the camera features in BlackBerry 10 with this statement:
RIM has been working with Scalado on camera technology and has licensed some of the Scalado technology for the BlackBerry 10 platform. As shown during the BlackBerry World Keynote, RIM is planning a unique implementation of the technology on BlackBerry 10 to provide an incredible user experience, allowing for more customization by the user and enabling them to easily capture and share their perfect moments.
Kudos to RIM for spotting some great functionality. I hope they have many more tricks like this up their sleeve.

Переслать - BlackBerry World 2012: Thorsten's Revenge, And How A RIM Staffer Saved My Night
BlackBerry World has been an amazing experience for me. It's my first time, and what a treat it's been to be around so many people who favor BlackBerry. The conference is winding down, people are clearing out, and things are much more relaxed, so I'm going to share 2 little things that made it just a little bit more cool.
THING 1:
I was watching the Blues Brothers street review early on in the evening. I tried to upload a pic, and it looked like it was going to time out. I minimized the app and holstered Agent 99. A few minutes later, we joined the line for Revenge of the Mummy. I pulled out my 9900 and discovered that my battery, which had been around 50-60% a few minutes prior, was down to 1%! Average drain rate per hour was listed at –297.5%.
I noticed a pair of RIM staffers in line behind us, and I asked if there were any battery-swap stations at the event. He told me he didn't think so. I cursed, thanked him, and turned around. A few seconds later he taps on my shoulder. I turned back around, and he said, "Here. Swap with me. I have a spare", offering up a JM-1.
"Seriously?" I asked. "You sure?"
"Absolutely. Take it."
So he took my dead battery and gave me one charged up to 75%. Out of his own pocket. I don't know if my press lanyard had anything to do with his decision or not, but I'd like to think that it didn't. I'd prefer to take it as a small but meaningful example of how RIM is paying more attention to the little guy, the individual consumer. I like it, and I felt it was worth sharing. Thank you, anonymous RIM employee. You made and my night and saved my 'berry.
THING 2:
A few minutes later, we got to the front of the line. As we lined up to board the ride, I glanced at a group of people across the tracks in the VIP lane. There was Thorsten, all smiles, with a group of, I assume, appropriately important people. Some cheers went up from those of us who could see him, and he grinned and waved back. Given the pressure and scrutiny he's under, it was good to see him in good spirits and enjoying himself. I hope that means that things with BB10 are going well. Again, small, but important.

Переслать - Check Out The BlackBerry 10 Keyboard Demo From BlackBerry World
I have been getting tons of questions from current BlackBerry users about BlackBerry 10 and keyboards. Many users cannot wait for a classic BlackBerry with a physical keyboard. On the other hand RIM showed us a very intriguing concept of what they are developing for the first all touch BlackBerry 10 device keyboard. This is note the final build but it includes awesome word prediction in the keyboard, gesture control, and more. Check it out below:

Personally I am more of a physical keyboard guy but I am really digging the design. Now they just need a Torch style BlackBerry 10 model in the portfolio.

Переслать - Thorsten Heins Confirms That They Are Close to Hiring CMO & COO
One of the things Thorsten Heins mentioned in his session for the media was that he was very close to naming a new CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) and COO (Chief Operating Officer) for RIM. These roles have been vacant and Thorsten highlighted when he first took the reigns that they were looking for a CMO and a COO to replace him. Thorsten said he could not mention who exactly would be taking on these titles but hinted that they are waiting to get signatures on the contracts before announcing them.
Personally I think RIM is in dire need of both a strong CMO and COO. They need to involve the CMO from product conception to make sure engineering delivers a product that is laser targeted and marketable to RIM's consumers. They also need a solid global COO to ensure the proper global execution of RIM's plans.
Hopefully we will be hearing more on this front soon!

Venezuelan movie goers can now buy tickets and get news on upcoming features with the click of a button, thanks to Cines Unidos’s app for BlackBerry® smartphones. As well as buying tickets and obtaining receipts and confirmations, the easy-to-use app, developed in partnership with Mobile Media Networks, gives users a 40-minute show-time warning and the ability to share movie schedules with friends and book dates over BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™). Cines Unidos makes the app—which now has about 1.5 million users—available for download on BlackBerry App World™, and by scanning QR codes in theater lobbies, on posters and popcorn dispensers.Finalists:

Also, Nomura needed to comply with the UK’s Financial Services Authority’s (FSA) Policy Statement 10/17, which made call recording mandatory on mobile devices. Nomura implemented BlackBerry® Mobile Voice System (BlackBerry® MVS), to assist with its regulatory compliance. It also helped reduce the call spend among BlackBerry MVS users by nearly 36%. Fifty per cent of all mobile calls at Nomura’s UK office now go out over BlackBerry MVS.Finalist:
• Eversheds LLP – in partnership with Polaris Financial Technology Limited.
Innovation in Private Sector Award
This award recognizes organizations that have deployed new, innovative wireless solutions to drive business productivity.Winner: Cablevisión S.A. Argentina
Cablevisión S.A. Argentina (Cablevisión) provides cable TV and broadband Internet service for more than 3.5 million customers in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. In the past, Cablevisión’s 5,000 field technicians had difficulty staying connected with their support teams and had to log their work and inventory of supplies used by hand. Needing a reliable solution, the company deployed BlackBerry smartphones and the Mobile II application, developed by Sensebyte Mobile. The solution allows technicians to confirm work orders, report on service in near real-time and enter inventory updates even if offline. Cablevisión has significantly decreased calls to the support center while improving productivity and service.Finalist:
• IA Clarington Investments, Inc.™

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Device Rings When You Call It!
Apparently the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device is more than just a "mini-PlayBook". It has phone hardware inside. Each Alpha came with an AT&T micro-sim card and a pre-assigned phone number. If you call it, it rings. There's no phone software on the device, so you can't answer the call, but it's good to know this is more than just a blank slate for the UI. Scrid, I'll stop calling your Alpha now. You never answer, anyway.

Переслать - Galaxy on Fire 2 HD blazing onto BlackBerry PlayBook
Game developer Fish Labs showed off a spectacular game, Galaxy on Fire 2 HD, during the BlackBerry 10 Jam keynote as a demonstration of how easy it is to port to PlayBook. It took them less than a day, and, in one case, only 3 lines of code to enable key features. This is an important testament to the ease of developing for the BlackBerry QNX environment that is the foundation of BB10, and RIM's future.

Fishlabs Entertainment plans to release its high-end flagship title for the BlackBerry PlayBook on BlackBerry App World™ at the end of May.
"Thanks to the straight forward developer tools, the solid operating system and the premium quality hardware, it took us only one day to get a first version running on the BlackBerry PlayBook. "We are extremely excited to be releasing our flagship title on the PlayBook at end of this month. With the tight integration of BlackBerry App World and its premium user base we would not be surprised that BlackBerry becomes our second most important platform in a very short time."

Since its debut in October 2011, the complete graphical overhaul of Fishlabs' popular outer space adventure has been a great success on iOS with users all over the world giving it 5-star-ratings as well as writing glowing reviews for the outstanding visual quality and extraordinary gaming experience. The title has also been listed as an ambassador for AAA gaming on the new iPad on IGN, Pocketgamer, Toucharcade and other leading gaming sites.
About Galaxy on Fire 2™ HD:

The title's epic plot puts the gamer right in the middle of the hard-fought struggle for survival of the galaxy's four major factions, namely the Terrans, Midorians, Nivelians and Vossk. Due to a malfunction of his ship's hyperdrive, Keith T. Maxwell, the hero of the first instalment of the series, is catapulted through space and time. 35 years into the future, he awakens at the far end of the galaxy and quickly realizes that a lot has changed during his absence. An aggressive alien menace known as Voids is lurking on the edge of known space and using sophisticated wormhole technology to raid cargo ships and convoys of all four factions. The unstable peace between the factions is on the line and Keith is the only one who can save the universe from its impending descend into chaos.

Переслать - Thorsten Heins Discusses Constant Drumbeat of Negative Press & Renewed Focus
I thought this was an interesting question that came out during our press session with RIM's CEO, Thorsten Heins. He was asked by one of the writers in attendance "how frustrating and demoralizing is it for Thorsten and RIM to hear the constant drumbeat of 'RIM is Failing' or 'RIM is being sold off'…?" Here was Thorsten's response: (Paraphrased)
This is a very sensitive question for me but one I am very glad you asked. I have a thick skin and I know what is true and what is a little bit off. What worries me is that I have employees working day and night to get stuff done and they are sacrificing time with friends and family to win. They get asked all these questions from their families and friends about what went wrong and they are subject to a lot of these discussions. What struck me personally was that once the management team provided this renewed focus, accountability, and guidance they brushed their shoulders and the morale in RIM is increasing where employees now know what they are focused on and how that will ensure RIM will succeed. This is another one of the relationships that we have changed at RIM. I (Thorsten) talk to our employees very openly and frank and give direct honest feedback. The teams are also now beginning to see the convergence to the final objective of a solid perfect BlackBerry 10 launch. This is one of the things that keeps me up at night to shield my people from this negative positioning of the company in the wrong spot as we build the future. RIM is very big on on accepting valid criticism and being part of that conversation but in a productive way.
My favorite quote from Thorsten was that RIM is becoming a "lean mean nimble hunting machine." That has meant analyzing how many management layers RIM has and needs, an accountability system, is there one person who is responsible at the end, and empowerment. RIM is a very collaborative company but this did not scale in their explosive growth with teams not individuals being responsible or empowered to do what they need. This lead to fragmentation of responsibilities and slowed RIM down.
Thorsten wants RIM to be so focused they melt steel like a laser (Thorsten is a physicist) since he wants RIM to focus on what will lead to success. They also means he wants a laser focus at RIM for messaging to customers. They are homing in on a CMO but they cannot announce it yet but they are very close to announcing one. They are also announcing a Chief Operating Officer instead of the three different ones that had before Thorsten was CEO.
Goals and Objectives – BlackBerry 7 has reached its level of perfection that for more than 15 years has created growth for RIM. RIM needed something to take RIM forward in the mobile computing space. Building an OS from the bottom up takes years. Continuing with the current BlackBerry 7 OS legacy RIM had was limited and would have been a complete rewrite anyways. RIM looked at open platforms and saw what was happening to companies using them and it did not give RIM any confidence or a way to differentiate themselves. RIM's hard choice was that they have to do it themselves for the next decade. So they chose QNX that specialized in verticals, for example, 65% of cars run QNX and 95% of car makers implement QNX. Dan Dodge in combination with the RIM team started the journey 1.5 years ago to integrate the companies (RIM & QNX) along with others like the astonishing tribe. The Developer alpha is one step further to help bring partners and companies to get familiar with the application platform.
Last but not least what I found reassuring was Thorsten's response to a question of "Where do you think RIM's market share numbers will be in Q4 of 2012 when BlackBerry 10 launches?" Thorsten said that RIM expects to gain market share in the US. RIM is not in the market to be in the game, they want to win. Thorsten calls this question the average temperature of patients in the hospital question where it is all based on each market and you cannot average each patients temprature. A negative situation in the US and positive in Europe, Middle East, and Africa until BlackBerry 10 launches.

Переслать - Thorsten Heins Focused on Making BlackBerry 10 Experience Perfect
One of the statements that really excited me from RIM's CEO, Thorsten Heins, was that he was committed to BlackBerry 10. Specifically Thorsten said that "quality matters" and that he is laser focused on making sure the BlackBerry 10 experience will be perfect at launch. According to him there is a lot more to come for BlackBerry 10 beyond what we have seen so far. This includes the seamless flow between multiple applications that run in real time in the background. Something other platforms cannot provide. That way when you flow you have everything at your fingertips.
The BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha is definitely not a final device but it gives developers an idea of form factor. RIM is making sure that the experience with full touch builds on RIM's previous experience with PlayBook and even Storm and BlackBerry 7. They want to make sure that typing both on touchscreens and physical keyboards are the best.
I am just hoping this means that RIM is dedicated to make sure BlackBerry 10 is a full experience instead of a half delivered one like the BlackBerry PlayBook. I am loving that RIM is finally focused on delivering a final product instead of a dev one.
Thorsten also shared why he thinks RIM really has something with BlackBerry 10. He said that when the different teams presented him for the first time all the integration points of the building blocks of BlackBerry 10 a few weeks back there was no stuttering, hourglassing, hickups, or anything. This is BlackBerrys future and everything was running in real time.

Переслать - RIM CEO Confirms Physical Keyboards and Localization In BlackBerry 10
This morning we sat in what was actually a first for RIM, a direct interface session between the gathered press and the CEO. Thorsten Heins gave a short speech reiterating the direction in which BB10 will be taking the company, then accepted questions from the press.
Some highlights from the session:
- Physical keyboards – "We make the best physical keyboard on the planet, and we don’t want to give that up." Thorsten addressed this in his opening monologue, and again in response to a direct question: "A physical keyboard WILL be an option in the BlackBerry 10 portfolio."
- Localization – Press members from China and Turkey asked if localization would be available to their regions in BB10. Heins confirmed that it will, and added comments to the effect that the adaptive keyboard in BB10 will actually learn and recognize the language being input by the user. He implied that there would be no need to enter an Options or Settings screen to choose an input language, but that, of course, remains to be seen.
- RIM has a whole localization team dedicated to making localization work
