- Free ScrapBook PlayBook App Gets 3D Theme Pack Upgrade
RIM and TAT are on a roll with theme pack updates to the free PlayBook ScrapBook app. The latest is a 3D pack that seems to be based on the anaglyphed red (left eye) and cyan (right eye) filtered 3D glasses from back in the day. I don't have a pair handy to test it out but I definitely wil be getting a pair shortly.
Check out the new 3D pack by downloading ScrapBook if you do not already have it installed. If you have it already just look under the "New" tab for the new pack.

Переслать - PlayBook OS 2.0 Aces Sencha HTML5 Development Scorecard
This little tidbit was lost during all the craziness of BlackBerry World and BlackBerry 10 Jam but I think it is still worth mentioning. Jerry let us know that Sencha put the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 through their various tests for HTML5 and found that it had improved upon an already solid HTML5 platform. In their previous scorecard they said that the PlayBook OS 1.0 was superior to Android 3.0's browser overall and an excellent HTML5 platform. Their follow up scorecard for PlayBook OS 2.0 goes even further to call it a Very Fine HTML5 browser stating that:
With the release of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2, the RIM browser team once again delivers a high performance and up-to-date HTML5 platform for web app developers. For businesses that want to bet on a stable, state of the art device for HTML5 applications, the BlackBerry PlayBook with OS 2 is an excellent choice.
Devs can check out the full scorecard here. I am just waiting to see what they say once they get a hold of the browser that RIM started showing and revealed in the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices…

Переслать - More Pictures Of BlackBerry 10 Homescreen, Keyboard, & Camera Come Out
We are seeing more pictures of BlackBerry 10 showing up on various media outlets today thanks to RIM having a media briefing in London. They have been giving journalists on the other side of the pond a look at the features of the upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices but not much more than they showed off at BlackBerry World. They do give us more insight into the BlackBerry 10 Homescreen experience and its gestures that Thorsten Heins and other execs did not focus on during the keynote.
In the briefing RIM showed of the main homescreen with the multitasking four last apps that are running minimized with updating information like calendar and photos. We also see the application tray that you will get with a swipe left gesture to launch other apps with a swipe right gesture giving you access to your unified inbox. I also see the search box but RIM has yet to show off universal search…

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Jam Conference 2012 (Aka DevCon) is Sep 25-27 in San Jose, California
RIM has renamed the BlackBerry Developer Conference (DevCon) to BlackBerry 10 Jam Americas. They have also announced that it will be held on September 25-27 in San Jose, California instead of San Francisco this year. I am really excited for the conference but sadly it looks like I will not be able to make it this year since it is scheduled right in the middle of the Jewish High Holiday Yom Kippur. Hopefully RIM changes the date (I have my fingers crossed!) but if not we will have someone else from the team covering the show.
Keep an eye out at www.blackberryjamconference.com for more info. This show is sure to be a crowd pleaser since RIM should be ready to with the end product when it comes to developer tools and functionality at that point.

Переслать - Maxthon Ports Their Browser to the PlayBook (Android)
First Dolphin brought their popular browser to the PlayBook and now we have Maxthon doing the same. They are also making use of the Android runtime to easily port their app. The app does work though you can clearly tell that it would benefit from being a native app. There are some caveats but if you were looking for some different browser features on your PlayBook check out Maxthon free in App World. You can also find more details at www.maxthon.com and petition them to make a fully native PlayBook and BlackBerry 10 version!

Переслать - iOS Jailbreak Community Already Copying BlackBerry 10 Keyboard
Score one for RIM's engineers in the "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" category for BlackBerry 10. Kevin @CrackBerry spotted a new iOS iPhone tweak for jailbroken devices that tries to mimic the BlackBerry 10 keyboard RIM showed at BlackBerry World. This rip off is called the Octopus keyboard and is scheduled to be released as early as next week in the jailbreak app store Cydia. I have also been asking contacts at RIM if they have a patent on the BlackBerry 10 keyboard and still have not heard officially one way or another. Still its nice to see competitors copying BlackBerry 10 before it is released.
Obviously RIM's implementation is going to have a much better polish and technology than a jailbreak tweak but it speaks to the fact that the iOS keyboard is aging. If you really look at it the BlackBerry 10 and the PlayBook OS are currently the youngest large mobile OS out there with iOS soon the be the big dinosaur in the room.
