- RIM Partnering to Pilot NFC Ticketing at French Airport
RIM is really making a point of highlighting the NFC features in their latest BlackBerry 10 devices. JD tipped us off to a press release RIM put out today about a new pilot of contactless mobile services at Toulouse-Blagnac airport in France. They are teaming up with Orange and SITA to launch an NFC trial to allow passengers to pass through the airport using only their phones. In this case they are enabling 50 frequent flyers to use their phone as a security pass for a dedicated priority path through the airport including car parking (remembering their lot), departures access, and airport lounge access all without any other credentials.
Check out the details below:
CONTACTLESS MOBILE SERVICES: WORLDWIDE FIRST IN TOULOUSE-BLAGNAC AIRPORT
France – Toulouse-Blagnac airport has worked in collaboration with Research In Motion, Orange and SITA to reach new heights in innovative customer service. The airport is launching a Near Field Communication (NFC) trial that enables passengers to pass seamlessly through the airport using just their mobile phones. In a worldwide first for an airport, using a SIM card-based safety protocol, 50 frequent flyers will take part in a trial at Toulouse airport this summer, to test the new service on their BlackBerry® smartphones.
NFC technology allows easy access to a wide range of useful services. Using a wireless short-range connection a simple tap of the mobile device can validate a flight ticket, pay for goods or receive information about, for example, departure gates, flight changes and other relevant information.
Arriving at T-B airport, the passenger’s mobile phone will now act as their security pass for a dedicated, priority path through the airport. Passengers on the trial will be able to access the P1 car park using their smartphone, which will hold details on the parking lot in the memory. Then, without delay, they will be granted access to Departures via the Premium Access Zone. Thereafter, they'll be able to enjoy the comforts of the "La Croix du Sud" private lounge without needing to
Present additional credentials. En route through the airport, passengers on the trial will receive real-time information related to their flight (schedule, departure hall, boarding gate, etc.).Using NFC technology offers many advantages: it is extremely secure; it works even when the mobile is powered off; it does not require any specific application to be loaded on to it; it is not affected by reading problems due to a scratched or dirty screen surface. Passengers using NFC can now be handled more promptly and efficiently than with any of the current boarding processes available.
"With NFC technology, the mobile phone simplifies the passenger's journey through the airport, says Jean-Michel Vernhes, CEO of Toulouse-Blagnac airport. It now becomes a personalized tool displaying the right information at the right time. It also enables passengers to better manage their journey, so they can choose how they spend their time at the airport. For T-B airport, the approach is to give to flyers access to leading-edge technologies that enhance and facilitate their experience at the airport in providing new Premium services."
Through this partnership with Research In Motion, Orange and SITA, Toulouse-Blagnac airport looks towards the future, implementing functionalities that will be displayed in the new smartphone application planned for 2013-2014.
David Derrida, Director of Carrier Product Management Research In Motion:
« NFC technology opens up numerous exciting possibilities for BlackBerry smartphone users. We are actively working with partners around the world to advance the development of value-added, NFC-based services and we are very excited to be involved in this trial. This new technology is already available on several BlackBerry smartphones and we expect it to revolutionize the experience of passengers at the Toulouse-Blagnac airport. »
Didier Durand, Director of Contactless Mobile Services:
"We are happy that our collaboration with Toulouse-Blagnac airport enables us to deploy a pragmatic and secure offer, which will soon be available for Orange customers travelling through the airport.
In collaboration with Toulouse airport and an airline, our aim is to offer a complete service that includes the ticket. These contactless mobile services, which are based on the AFSCM and GSMA standards, will simplify peoples’ lives in a number of ways. Orange is working with partners in sectors such as transport, entertainment, banks, shopkeepers and service operators to create an ecosystem that will allow these services to take-off on a large scale."Renaud Irminger, Director of SITA Lab, SITA:
"SITA, the world’s leading specialist in air transport communications and IT solutions, is actively working on the development of new technologies that have the potential to improve the passenger experience, like NFC. In 2011, SITA Lab demonstrated through a demonstration room, that NFC could dramatically improve the passenger experience by, for example, using NFC-enabled phones as a boarding pass to open security, airline lounge and boarding gates automatically, and could also increase the penetration of mobile phone usage for air travel. We are delighted that this technology is now becoming a reality with the world's first trial at Toulouse-Blagnac".About Toulouse-Blagnac Airport

Переслать - RIM Helping Employees Make the Case for BlackBerry 7 Device Upgrades
RIM has realized that many of the complaints corporate users have with their BlackBerry devices have been vastly improved with BlackBerry 7. The problem is that many corporate IT departments are not updating users devices to BlackBerry 7 devices. Now RIM has created a new website www.upgrademenow.com to help enterprise employees make the case to their managers for an upgrade. Its actually a good idea though I am not sure how well it will work.
Here is the pitch RIM is making to employees:
If your BlackBerry doesn't look like one of these, it's time for an upgrade. Have a conversation with your IT manager today about upgrading your work device to a BlackBerry® 7 smartphone.
Features that will help enhance your productivity at work (and your enjoyment off the clock).
- The fastest BlackBerry browser to date
- Apps that help make you more productive and keep you more connected
- A unified inbox that consolidates all your messages and alerts in one place
- BlackBerry Tag on NFC devices — an easy way to share contacts and photos
- HD video recording and playback
- Easy integration with BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet
- The BlackBerry platform designed with security at the core
I am curious how many of you are still issued work devices that predate the BlackBerry 7 line. Let us know in the comments!

Переслать - Upgraded to Dictionary.com v2.0? Downgrade to v1.4 Easily
We have received quite a few complaints from readers that Dictionary.com has updated their very popular free dictionary app to v2.0. This new "upgrade" turned the really nice BlackBerry smartphone app into nothing more than a homescreen website shortcut. They now even call it the Dictionary.com Web Launcher and it is getting hammered in the reviews on App World.
Rroyy was kind enough to score the previous v1.4 and offered it up for download here at http://rroyy.com/dictionary. The UI does not work well on newer BlackBerry 7 devices but users with older devices will appreciate it.

Переслать - Streamline Voice Notes With QuickVoice Recorder One Touch
TrustBe just released a useful little utility called QuickVoice Recorder One Touch Audio Recording. The app streamlines voicenotes with one click. It allows you to start recording immediately when launching the app. You then click once again and it will automatically stop the recording and email it to you (up to 5MB). You can do all of this with the native voice recording app but this app cuts out half of the steps.

RIM sent out an email to developers that they are changing up some of the App World Category structures this week. - Shopping: The Shopping category has been renamed Lifestyle.
- Maps & Navigation: The Maps & Navigation category now includes Travel and has been renamedNavigation and Travel.

Переслать - MyCityWay Urban Reference Guide for the PlayBook (Limited US Cities)
MyCityWay announced at BlackBerry World that they launched their urban reference guide for the PlayBook with plans to bring it to BlackBerry 10 devices. The app currently is only available in select US cities namely: New York, San Francisco, Austin, Seattle, and Chicago. We held off mentioning it because it seemed like more cities (68 of them) would be launched shortly but learned recently that it is still a ways off.
MyCityWay helps you find local news, transit updates, gas prices, hot sales, restaurant deals, movie tickets or even the closest free Wi-Fi spot. The MyCityWay Snapshot scouts the city scene and tells you where to be. Check out the MyCityWay app on your PlayBook free in App World. The app has a really slick interface that is impressive but it can be a bit laggy. Still it has some decent info about NYC.
Full press release below:
MYCITYWAY PARTNERS WITH RIM TO DEVELOP NEW APP FOR PLAYBOOK AND BLACKBERRY 10 PLATFORMS
Real-time urban reference app from MyCityWay for the PlayBook tablet and BlackBerry 10 users features a customizable live Snapshot and an intuitive color psychology-based user interface
NEW YORK CITY (May 1, 2012) – For the first time, the all-new MyCityWay offers its personalized, real-time, all-access Snapshot on BlackBerry® PlayBook™ and BlackBerry 10 later this year. The newMyCityWay is highly optimized for the BlackBerry PlayBook platform and transforms your tablet into a comprehensive, yet intuitive urban reference guide. Whether you are looking for local news, transit updates, cheapest gas prices, the hottest sales, restaurant deals, movie tickets or just the closest free Wi-Fi spot to get some work done, the Snapshot immediately scouts the scene and finds it for you.
The BlackBerry platform's reputation as the de facto choice for business users combined with the way MyCityWay's apps serve business travelers, city residents and tourists made this partnership a perfect match."Whether you are a business person on a plane planning your itinerary or a busy mom looking after the kids, MyCityWay will transform the PlayBook into the all-inclusive metro utility for your needs," said Puneet Mehta, co-founder of MyCityWay. "We are highly impressed with how easily the BlackBerry developer tool kit allowed us to customize MyCityWay for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to offer users a truly enriched in-app experience."
This spring, MyCityWay will be available on PlayBook for five cities including New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle and Austin, and will expand to over 20 cities by fall 2012. This first of its kind mobile urban reference app offers a personalized, real-time, all-access Snapshot that instantly connects you to local news, transit updates, hottest sales and all the up-to-the-minute usable information you crave. MyCityWay is also the first city guide app to display information in a visually intuitive menu. You'll know when to hit-up a venue, where a deal is being offered and receive practical transit advice, like "you're fine to walk to the restaurant from here" or "better take a cab." Available now for New York City residents and travelers, MyCityWay will expand to include cities across the entire U.S. by the end of May, with international cities to follow.
"The MyCityWay app provides PlayBook users with incredibly useful info to make the most of their time in a city and it is a must-have app for both locals and visitors," says Martyn Mallick, VP, Global Alliances & Business Development at RIM, "We are also very excited to be working with MyCityWay to bring their app to the BlackBerry 10 platform later this year."

Update: artiesberry let us know that the app has been changed to $0.99 from free by the developer.
I have been simply using Google for years as a dictionary on my BlackBerry but Jason introduced me to Pocket Dictionary from SRID Games. This is in no way a comprehensive Oxford quality dictionary but it does work well and best of all it works offline. You only need an internet connection if you want to play the pronunciation of a word. It offers up over 1 million words and gives you the ability to set your own user defined list of words to come back to.

I was reading the WSJ this weekend and ran across an article about Uppidy and its BlackBerry. They have created a free service that backs up your text messages from your phone and view them on their website. This lets you sort them and manage your messages and even share them with others. Right now the app only backs up your SMS since you have installed the app so older SMS are not backed up. After you install the app it will sync your messages at a interval you specify.
