Переслать - Third Party APK to BAR Converter Website for PlayBook Android Ports
RIM already allows developers to easily convert Android APK app files to BAR PlayBook apps online (here) but that was not enough for some. @KoLoNjI let us know about APK2BAR that does the same thing in one click without other steps like keys and SDK downloads. I am afraid this will be used for piracy but that is more up to Google to resolve for Android runtime apps and many of these apps are free either way.
Check out APK2BAR at apk2bar.unker.net

Переслать - Kayak Releases BlackBerry Smartphone App Update to v2.0.6
Kayak shafted BlackBerry users recently with a public announcement that they were dropping support and maintenance for us in January. They they proceeded to do an about face and released their Android app on the PlayBook using the Android runtime. Now they have further muddled the issue by releasing what seems to be a maintenance update for Kayak for BlackBerry Smartphones. The updated Kayak app brings us to v2.0.6 from the previous v2.0.4.
I am not sure if that means Kayak has decided to do the right thing and maintain support for their BlackBerry app or they just made a quick fix for a friend. Either way you can get the new v2.0.6 of Kayak in App World. Let us know if you score a change log.

Переслать - Kodak Loses Yet Another Round in Patent Lawsuit Against RIM & Apple
RIM and Apple have just won another round against Kodak. For the last two years Kodak has claimed that RIM violated their patent for viewing images on a digital camera after taking them. The United States International Trade Commission released their preliminary findings on their website today (PDF). Essentially the judge (not the full commission) has ruled that RIM and Apple have violated Kodak's patent BUT they also ruled that the patent is invalid "due to obviousness." Kodak will obviously appeal this since they lost this round but here is the current rundown from the ITC:
Conclusions of Law
- The accused Apple iPhone 3G infringes claim 15 of the '218 patent.
- The accused Apple iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 do not infringe claim 15 of the '218
patent. - The accused RIM products infringe claim 15 of the '218 patent.
- Claim 15 of the '218 patent is invalid under 35 U.S.C. § 103 for obviousness.
- Apple has not violated 19 U.S.C. § 1337(a)(1) with respect to the '218 patent.
- RIM has not violated 19 U.S.C. § 1337(a)(1) with respect to the '218 patent.
Isn't it nice when judges see common sense?
Thanks Peter for sending this one in via CNET

Переслать - BlackBerry UK Rolls Out Three New TV Advertisements
RIM's BlackBerry UK advertising team just rolled out three new TV spots to compliment their first round. I really enjoyed their first "BlackBerry People who do" style ad and they seem to be continuing in that vein. The latest videos spotted by CrackBerry show of features like NFC payments on the Bold 9790, BBM Music on the Curve 9320, and the BlackBerry Bold 9900 browser.

Переслать - RIM Explains Piracy Protection Introduced in PlayBook OS 2.0.1
Alec Saunders raised a furor when he first talked about what RIM was doing to curb piracy on the PlayBook and BlackBerry 10. At first it sounded like he meant that RIM was going to block sideloading but he clarified that. Now we have details from RIM on what they did in OS 2.0.1 to protect developers from having their apps pirated.
In short backup files performed using desktop manager are now tied to a BlackBerry ID to stop users from sharing backup files between devices but still allowing that same user to switch devices. Backup files, including the applications, are now also encrypted and that key is tied to the users BlackBerry ID so each key is different per user. RIM then goes on to recommend that developers released their app for only OS 2.0.1+ in their next release so they can take advantage of these protections.
Check out the full details on the BlackBerry devblog. I have yet to hear from any devs on if these measures have really stemmed piracy but I will report back when I do. If you are a developer let us know what you think in the comments!
PS: I have hoped that RIM would develop a simple solution to tie all of your apps to your BlackBerry ID so devs can easily check if the app is authorized even without a data connection. Hopefully they are working on something in that vein.

Переслать - Developer Opens Up BlackBerry PlayBook Bridge From Desktop
Now this is an interesting development and one that I think RIM should keep an eye on. The N4BB crew spotted a slick new app that is currently waiting for RIM's approval in App World that opens up the BlackBerry Bridge on the PlayBook to your Desktop. This DesktopBridge app essentially will let you use the PlayBook bridge on your PC over SSL along with all its apps like BBM. In other words your PlayBook is bridged to your BlackBerry smartphone and your desktop accesses the bridge through the PlayBook.
If RIM approves the app, and I am not sure if they will, then the developer Xitij Ritesh Patel (@xitijpatel) plans on offering it for $4.99. Kind of a cool idea and one I really wish RIM would build in natively…

Переслать - Review: MobileFun 9900 Dual Desktop Sync and Charge Cradle
When MobileFun, a UK based accessory company, asked us to review one of their products, I quickly perused the Blackberry Bold 9900 accessories section of their website and found this little gem. Its a charging cradle that can connect to a power outlet (via the USB adapter) or computer and will charge and sync data while also charging a spare battery behind your 9900. Talk about a busy little accessory!
I had been wanting to pick up a spare battery anyway and this dual cradle would be the perfect solution for keeping everything juiced and ready to go. I found a deal on a spare battery on Amazon and impatiently waited for the goods to arrive at my door.
I have been testing out the Dual Cradle for a few days now and it has been awesome! Being able to charge the phone and a spare battery at the same time is an excellent feature. I am all about efficiency and reducing the amount of gadgetry I use on a daily basis so this is a perfect fit for me. I’m out a lot during the day so having an extra battery has been helpful.
PROS:
- All in one convenience (charge phone, battery, sync data)
- Keeps 2 batteries fully charged
- Reduces desktop clutter
- Keeps 9900 at convenient angle
- LED light indicates when charging is complete (red=charging, green=charged)
- Affordable (about $30 CAD)
CON:
- Dock uses USB instead of charging contacts at bottom (difficult to insert when its dark, but necessary to both charge and sync)
Check out some more pics below. The MobileFun product page has more information, pictures, reviews and how to order your own. Also check out MobileFun’s complete lineup of accessories for BlackBerry devices of all shapes and sizes! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
