I was waiting a bit to see how this one panned out before mentioning the release of Desktop Manager v7.0 bundle 60. The last public release of 7.0 Bundle 44 was an unmitigated disaster with "preparing sync preview" issues abound when it came to synching PIM data. RIM fixed that with releases in the Beta Zone and even released a version of Desktop Manager 7.1 beta in the beta zone.
Still its nice to see the official Desktop Manager release fixed at v7.0. You can download it now directly from RIM or check out the change log PDF here. Sadly this version still does not bring PlayBook PIM desktop sync.

WordPress for BlackBerry v1.6 has been in public beta for awhile now. Piotr @BBNews.pl noticed that the Automattic team has pushed out the new release to all in App World. Update: It looks like this is just a very good theme mimicking BlackBerry 10. If someone spots it in App World let us know! (Kudos to Bla1ze for pointing it out!)
I am not sure what to make of this video demo but it looks legit. A couple readers sent this in (one crediting OSBB but not sure where) and it looks very similar to the BlackBerry tutorial videos and demos RIM has used in the past. The video is titled BB QNX 2.0 Preview 1 which has me wondering how old it is but the date is titled as Tuesday May 29th. It also does not have some of the main UI elements RIM showed off at BlackBerry World such as the messages list. Either way it is fun to watch! Feel free to speculate in the comments.
Have you had trouble connecting your PlayBook to your PC over USB with Desktop Manager giving you error messages like "BlackBerry Desktop Software cannot communicate with the connected device." When I first ran into this issue with the launch of PlayBook I thought it was caused by a custom image of Windows XP that had a critical service turned off. I have since found that quite a few users have had this issue sporadically so I finally got down to addressing it especially since it even made its way to CrackBerry's front page.
What happens is that the USB connection to the BlackBerry PlayBook emulates a network adapter. It makes use of the Microsoft File Sharing and NetBIOS service to connect to the PlayBook. For most people this is setup by default but for some reason that I cannot nail down this is not happening for some users. Well luckily there is a fix and it is an easy one though it was bit crude when I first wrote it up. GH pointed out to me that RIM has their own knowledge base article about this issue that details the main fix in a much easier to follow format:
The following settings need to be enabled in the Research in Motion Network Driver connection located under Network Connections:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
To enable this setting in Microsoft® Windows® XP, please complete the following steps.
Go to Control Panel in Windows
Select Network Connections
In the LAN or High-Speed Internet window, select and right mouse click on the Local Area Connection that is detected as Research In Motion Network Device
Select Properties after doing a right mouse click
Ensure Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks,Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is checked
To enable this setting in Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows Vista®, please complete the following steps.
Go to Control Panel in Windows
Select Network and Internet (in Category View, if in Small or Large icons view, go to the next step)
Select Network and Sharing Center
Under View your active networks, choose the alternative Local Area Connection x (Access type: No Internet access) that is detected as Research In Motion Network Device
In the next window for Local Area Connection x Status, select Properties
Ensure Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks,Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) is checked
NOTE: I have personally found that you also need to enable the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service for Windows to make everything work. This is disabled on some systems that are tuned for performance. To turn it on open the Services manager by right clicking on My Computer -> Select Manage from the drop down menu -> go to Services and Applications on the left hand side and select the sub option of Services. You will then have to find the NetBIOS service option and click the run button and set its options to startup automatically at boot.

At BlackBerry 10 Jam in Orlando Alec Saunders announced that RIM would be offering a $10,000 guarantee for BlackBerry 10 apps that meet a quality criteria. Most of the details of this program have not yet been announced, but we do know that in order to qualify for the guarantee an app must reach at least $1,000 dollars worth of sales. This offer will have a direct impact on the apps that are initially available on BlackBerry 10.
Uniform design
Details are not yet out on what the quality criteria will be, but most likely it will involve creating an app following RIM’s design criteria for BB10. This will most likely mean writing the UI for apps in either bbUI.js or Cascades. The end result for users will be a lot of apps with a consistent interface.
Higher percentage of paid apps
The guarantee does not apply to free apps, so developers who are unsure of a business model will be more likely to choose going with a paid app rather than a free app in order to take advantage of this offer. There is no word yet if this offer would apply to free apps that make use of in-app purchases. I would hope that these apps are included, because otherwise it is an incentive to go with the model of separate free/premium apps, which is not as user friendly (or as good for the developer in the long term).
No change on the top end
For most top tier apps $10,000 worth of sales will be easily reached anyhow so there will be no real effect on these apps from the guarantee. The effect of this offer is far more likely to have a greater impact on encouraging more app creation on the mid to low end apps that are bringing in ~$1,000 in revenue per year.
More apps available at launch
The best way to take advantage of this program is to submit apps early, and to be a part of it from the beginning. As a result, this offer will help drive more apps to be available for BlackBerry10 on day one.
More advertising of apps
If spending $300 on advertising brings in an additional $100 worth of sales, then the advertising is a waste of money. However with this offer, it is important enough to get the first $1,000 worth of sales that in some cases spending $3,000 in advertising in order to guarantee that you hit the threshold will be well worth it.
Little incentive to encourage incrementally better sales
With this program, there is a lot of incentive to reach $1,000 in sales. For apps that sell more then $10,000 there is the normal monetary incentive to sell more. For apps stuck in the middle there is little incentive to drive sales. For an app that has already crossed the $1,000 threshold and seem unlikely to surpass ten grand there is no incentive at all. This may result in a good number of apps that don’t receive much in the way of updates or support during their first year.

The idea is that FUZZengine will provide the sounds, wallpapers, and other customizations for other apps.
You can check out FUZZengine for yourself (currently only for wallpapers) and let us know what you think. When you download the wallpapers you can find them under the pictures folder in a FUZZ folder.

There were two little tidbits that RIM's CEO, Thorsten Heins, slipped into the business update RIM released today. First of all Heins set the stage for the hard facts that RIM will have a rough few quarters and fall short of what Wall Street wants to see. They also confirmed the previous rumor that had them hiring J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and RBC Capital Markets for a strategic review of their business and financial performance. As you can see below they have hired both of them to help RIM identify opportunities through partnerships, licensing, or other business models:
To further enhance our commitment to successfully completing our transformation, after the release of our year-end financial results, we engaged J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and RBC Capital Markets to assist the Company and our Board of Directors in reviewing RIM's business and financial performance. These advisors have been tasked to help us with the strategic review we referenced on our year-end financial results conference call and to evaluate the relative merits and feasibility of various financial strategies, including opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives.
I am not sure what that will mean in the short term since Heins has stated that RIM first needs to prove BlackBerry 10 before considering licensing it. In other words expect to hear more during RIM's earnings call.

We have been hearing from sources that RIM has been piling up the hardware capacity and infrastructure upgrades recently. This includes App World updates, database updates, network capacity updates and more leading us to wonder how much of this is in prep for BlackBerry 10. There has been quite a bit of speculation about how heavily RIM will utilize the BlackBerry NOC in BlackBerry 10 and we are eagerly waiting to see what they have in mind especially for App World and BlackBerry Messenger. Only time will tell!

As promised Thorsten Heins has provided a business update on what is going on at RIM since he took control. The statements are more or less what we expected including them planning on continuing to evaluate their organizational structure to eliminate fragmentation, duplication, and inefficiencies while still hiring in key areas related to launching BlackBerry 10. They have also hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets for financial advice and evaluating strategies.
Heins signed off with a hopeful note stating that:
Although we are facing challenges, we remain excited about BlackBerry 10 and believe that this platform coupled with the results of the strategic review will create long-term value for our stakeholders. We will provide another more detailed business update when we report our first quarter results in June."
Here is the full release:
Research In Motion CEO Provides Business Update
WATERLOO, ONTARIO, May 29, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) — Research In Motion Limited (RIM), a world leader in the mobile communications market, today provided a business update from Thorsten Heins, the Company’s President and CEO.
"During the Q4 2012 and fiscal year-end financial results conference call on March 29, I said that I would provide our shareholders with candid and timely updates when possible on the progress and challenges RIM is experiencing. While we are no longer giving quantitative financial guidance, I wanted to provide a brief business update at this time, and will provide more details when our Q1 financial results for the quarter ended June 2, 2012 are released on June 28.
In terms of challenges, as I mentioned on the March financial results conference call, RIM is going through a significant transformation as we move towards the BlackBerry 10 launch, and our financial performance will continue to be challenging for the next few quarters. The on-going competitive environment is impacting our business in the form of lower volumes and highly competitive pricing dynamics in the marketplace, and we expect our Q1 results to reflect this, and likely result in an operating loss for the quarter. We are continuing to be aggressive as we compete for our customers’ business – both enterprise and consumer – around the world, and our teams are working hard to provide cost-competitive, feature-rich solutions to our global customer base. On the positive side, we expect to further increase our cash position in Q1 from the approximately $2.1 billion we had at the end of fiscal 2012.
Despite the current challenges, we have made significant progress on a number of fronts in the past few months:
-- Our annual BlackBerry World conference and BlackBerry 10 Jam took place earlier this month and both were tremendously successful. More than 5,000 developers, partners, carriers and enterprise customers from 115 different countries saw the first glimpses of our next-generation BlackBerry 10 platform and their response was encouraging. -- Our developer partners have been enthusiastic with the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha prototype unit we distributed at BlackBerry World and many are well underway in developing applications to be ready for the launch of BlackBerry 10 in the latter part of calendar 2012. -- The support and enthusiasm from our developer community is also reflected in our app growth, where we now feature more than 80,000 apps, which represents a 220% increase from one year ago, and more than 15,000 apps for PlayBook compared to less than 2,000 last year. We believe this bodes well for our ecosystem as we get set to launch BlackBerry 10. -- We are making steady progress with the innovation of our next-generation BlackBerry 10 mobile computing platform, which is still on track to launch in the latter part of calendar 2012. -- Our global subscriber base continued to grow this quarter to approximately 78 million, driven primarily by growth in international markets, which is partially offset by high churn in the United States, and our BBM user base has grown to approximately 59 million users globally. -- Our strong brand internationally was recently enhanced with the successful launch of two new BlackBerry 7 phones in India and Latin America.
We continue to make strategic changes to RIM’s senior management team with the hiring of two key new members to RIM’s executive leadership team. Kristian Tear, our Chief Operating Officer, whose background also includes extensive experience in international sales in Europe, Asia and Latin America, and Frank Boulben, our Chief Marketing Officer, who will provide our team with deep experience in the mobile computing and communications industry. Both will assist me and the existing executive team as we continue to make the organizational changes necessary to position RIM for the future and prepare for the launch of our new BlackBerry 10 platform.
The CORE (cost optimization and resource efficiency) program we told you about previously is focused on delivering key operational savings through various initiatives. The financial objectives for the CORE program are targeted to drive $1 billion in savings by the end of fiscal 2013, based on our Q4 run rate. We are targeting better efficiency and use of resources in our sales and marketing initiatives to effectively leverage marketing windows and evaluate our country portfolio to determine where it makes sense for us to prioritize our efforts. We will also continue to review RIM’s organizational structure and clearly define accountabilities for all key businesses and business processes with a goal of eliminating fragmentation, duplication and inefficiencies. While there will be significant spending reductions and headcount reductions in some areas throughout the remainder of the fiscal year, we will continue to spend and hire in key areas such as those associated with the launch of BlackBerry 10, and those tied to the growth of our application developer community. We will share more details regarding our progress throughout the year as programs are implemented or changes are completed.
To further enhance our commitment to successfully completing our transformation, after the release of our year-end financial results, we engaged J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and RBC Capital Markets to assist the Company and our Board of Directors in reviewing RIM’s business and financial performance. These advisors have been tasked to help us with the strategic review we referenced on our year-end financial results conference call and to evaluate the relative merits and feasibility of various financial strategies, including opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives.
Although we are facing challenges, we remain excited about BlackBerry 10 and believe that this platform coupled with the results of the strategic review will create long-term value for our stakeholders. We will provide another more detailed business update when we report our first quarter results in June."

He explains that as much as RIM wants the hottest titles and games on BlackBerry 10 they very much need startups to bring innovation to the platform.

Thorsten Heins and his team have hinted for awhile now that they have been analyzing the RIM organization and streamlining it. Sadly this means that many people responsible for the devices we love will be shown the door if they do not fit into Thorsten's view for BlackBerry 10. RIM currently has about 16,500 employees and the Globe and Mail is reporting that RIM plans on laying off 2,000 or so of that global workforce before their release their Q1 results on June 2nd. It makes sense and is a sign that Heins is cleaning up shop so he can take the write down this quarter before BlackBerry 10 launches but it still sucks for those who will not be around to release BlackBerry 10 and mount RIM's comeback.
