- BlackBerry App World Hits 3 Billion Downloads
RIM launched BlackBerry App World a little over 3 years ago and it has grown steadily since. They just announced that they have served over 3 billion downloads from the official BlackBerry storefront. That does not include third party BlackBerry app stores and other sources and averages out to over 2.5 million downloads a day from App World. It took RIM 786 days to hit the first billion downloads and 210 to hit the second with this last billion taking 176 days. RIM also let out that there are now over 90,000 apps from over 28,000 App World vendors.
Check out the details over at the BlackBerry DevBlog. I wonder when they will hit their next billion? I think they could get there faster if they added coupon/promo codes. (Pretty please?)

Переслать - Poynt files for Bankruptcy In Hopes of Continuing
This is some sad news I really did not see coming. The hugely popular cross platform local search company Poynt has filed for bankruptcy in Calgary, Canada. According to the press release put out by Poynt they have filed a Notice of Intention under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency act which lets they stay creditors for 30 days as a judge decides if it should be extended. Poynt said that:
The Company (Poynt) is not currently in a position to meet the obligations owing to its secured and unsecured creditors and as such, has taken this action under the BIA as the most expeditious and economical manner of addressing the interests of its creditors and allowing it to carry on its operations.
Poynt Corp. expects to file a formal proposal under the BIA, setting forth a comprehensive plan for payment to Poynt Corp.’s creditors in due course. The trustee named in the notice of intention is Hardie & Kelly Inc., of Calgary, Alberta.
I really hope they find a way to carry on operations or at the very least sell to another company to carry the torch. I with them the best of luck and hope they pull through. via Marketwire via MobileSyrup

Переслать - Free Multi Copy – Paste App Combines Multiple Clipboard Items
Jason let us know about another awesome free app from Amira Soft called Multi Copy – Paste. The app allows you to easily copy multiple items from different places and paste it all in one go. For people who find themselves copying multiple items into an email this is a godsend.
The process has you:
Select any text _ click on multi copy from menu _ Select another text _ click on multi copy from menu _ select another text _ click on multi copy from menu…….. Paste to any desired location; all the three selected, copied texts will be pasted.
It shows up in the menu as Multi Copy and then when you paste it pastes all the collected items. If you use the normal native Copy function it clears the buffer and starts the process over again.

Переслать - BlackBerry OS 7.1 Supports uPNP and BlackBerry 10 Will be DLNA Certified
Recent BlackBerry 7.1 OS releases have included a new Wireless Media Server feature that we have covered before. It allows you to share pictures, music, and video from your BlackBerry to other media devices over Wi-Fi. We also know that RIM has confirmed that BlackBerry 10 devices will be DLNA certified. I have tried explaining the difference a few times to readers but I think RIM has done a great job of it in their knowledge base.
To boil it all down BlackBerry 7.1 devices make use of the uPNP standards and are not DLNA certified. For a device to be DLNA certified it needs to support both uPNP and DLNA though many of you have discovered that DLNA devices work just fine with the uPNP BlackBerry 7.1 media server. Still it will be nice when RIM adds DLNA support to BlackBerry 10 and the PlayBook. I am really hoping they add DLNA control along with streaming.

Переслать - RIM Sponsoring EcoCAR 2 Challenge To Make Greener Car with QNX
QNX shared on their auto blog that RIM & QNX are sponsoring a program called EcoCAR 2 this year. The EcoCAR 2 program challenges 15 North American Universities to "create a greener car without compromising performance, safety, and consumer acceptibility." This is part of the US Department of Energy and General Motors program to advance vehicle efficiency and RIM is enabling students this year with QNX. They are giving these students and university researchers full access to RIM's top of the line QNX CAR app platform for their systems in this three year program. This year is the first year of the program and I am curious to see what the universities come up with.
Check out more details on the QNX Auto blog along with the EcoCAR 2 program website and Facebook page.

Переслать - RIM Rumored to Be Feeling Pressure from Carriers to Lower Service Fee
RIM made it clear during their last earnings report that they are feeling "pressure to reduce RIM’s monthly infrastructure access fees." Now the FinancialPost is reporting that "there's definitely negotiations going on right now to reduce" according to one analyst which is sort of stating the obvious. These fees amount to about a third of RIM's current revenue and that same insightful analyst estimates that the revenue from these service fees could drop 17% to $3.4 billion this year and another 18% to $2.8 billion next year.
Carriers and RIM declined to comment on the story which is another obvious move and RIM brilliantly responded that "RIM intends to continue generating a revenue stream from the services we offer." You have to love obvious analyst news…

Переслать - DrawingBoard Pro for The BlackBerry PlayBook
I have been looking for a solid drawing program for my PlayBook and Jen pointed out DrawingBoard Pro in a tip. DrawingBoard has been available as a free app for awhile now in App World but Sangita Bai has released a pro version recently. The pro version brings loads of new fixes and improvements that really round out the app. The real thing I still find missing is integration with the email app but that is a limitation of the platform so far.
Features include:
- Easy to use interface
- Adjustable pen size
- Adjustable pen opacity
- Custom pen colors (with full Color Range to choose from)
- Unlimited Undo & Redo
- Eraser option
- Save image with different quality options (Low, Medium, High) in JPEG format
- Custom Background Images
- Custom Background Color (with full Color Range to choose from)

Переслать - Explore Space With Exoplanet Explorer & Solar System Explorer
When I first heard about Solar System Explorer I was not that crazy about it since I was already hooked on Stellarium for my PlayBook. James let me know that Neil Burlock has now followed up on the success of the 3D Solar System Explorer by taking you even further with Exoplanet Explorer. Explanet Explorer takes you beyond solar system based on known data and explore virtual models of more than 700 planets.
Both Exoplanet Explorer ($2.99) and Solar System Explorer ($1.99) are worth checking out in App World. Let me know if you find other great PlayBook space apps.
PS: From the great Galaxy Quest… "As long as there is injustice, whenever a Targathian baby cries out, wherever a distress signal sounds among the stars, we’ll be there. This fine ship, this fine crew. Never give up… and never surrender."

Переслать - Review: Jabra Supreme UC Bluetooth Headset
Rating: 10 out of 10 stars
There are a lot of Bluetooth headsets that are cheaper than the Jabra Supreme UC, so you’ll certainly want to know what you’re getting if you’re shelling out the money for this one. Well, here goes:
What’s you get:
Obviously the box comes with a headset. Along with it are a USB adapter, wall and car chargers, an alternate ear pad and and an alternate ear loop (for comfort) and a USB cable. It also comes with a carrying case with room for the headset and the USB adapter.
Some key features:
- Jabra LINK 360 Bluetooth USB Adapter – Easy PC Connectivity for UC calls
- Multiuse – connects to 2 Bluetooth devices simultaneously
- Active Noise Cancellation – removes ambient noise for the headset user
- Voice Control and Voice Guidance for hands-free operation
- Flip-Boom arm – makes it easy to activate and carry
- Up to 6 hours of talk time and 15 days of standby time
- Weight – 0.64 oz.
- Dimensions – W 3.53 in x L 1.18 in x H0.86 in
Setup:To pair a device with the headset, simply push the talk-end button while flipping out the boom arm. After about 3 seconds, the pairing process begins (and you just have to follow the instructions in your ear).
The Bluetooth USB adapter just has to be plugged into a USB port. It takes a very short time to install and is hassle-free.
The Good:- The power is turned on simply by flipping the boom arm out – this means you’re never unsure if the device is on or off.
- The sound quality on both ends is really, really good. While using the device, I asked numerous people how I sounded. Even with that prompting, none of them guessed that I was on a headset.
- Dual Functionality – not only does the headset work with mobile phones, it can also connect with your computer and make calls on Skype, Google Talk, and other computer phone call technologies. There was no trouble with the video chat and I, who am usually glued to the computer during a video chat, was able to get up and move around without getting out of voice range.
- It can connect to numerous devices at the same time. And switching between different units (phone and computer) could hardly be easier, as all it takes to switch is pushing the call-end button for two seconds.
- Getting remaining battery time information is quite simple: Press the voice command button and say “battery.” The talk time is then given, in 30 minute increments (i.e. “Your remaining talk time is 4 hours 30 minutes.”)
- The low battery indicator had the device (verbally) reminding me that it needed a recharge before the last minute.
The Bad:- The headset, with its flip boom arm, is bigger than many other options.
Conclusion:
All said, the Jabra Supreme UC Bluetooth headset is very effective and intuitively designed. (When I checked the instructions after forgetting how to do something, I kicked myself for forgetting such a simple task.) Thought it’s not exactly cheap, Jabra certainly gives you a lot of bang for your buck.

Переслать - How to Enable BlackBerry Device Analyzer in OS 7.1.0.523+
BlackBerry Device Analyzer, is an application/set of tools to monitor the health of your BlackBerry. Among other things, it is used to keep track of service coverage & drops and battery charge/discharge rates. BlackBerry OS 7.1.0.523 – which is the latest OS release for many of the BB7 phones – brought us ‘Application Resource Monitor’ but was seemingly missing BBDA. Upon further inspection, the application was listed as installed, but could not be found or launched.
Browsing through the CB forums, I came across a post by PiotrJot regarding BlackBerry Device Analyzer and a quick code on how to enable it even on the latest OS builds. To enable it simply:- Open Options,
- Hold ALT & type BBDA
- BBDA is now available in: Options > Device > Advanced System Settings > BlackBerry Device Analyzer.
From the time it first appeared, Device Analyzer was buried in the advanced options screen, beside things like Cell Broadcasting & Browser Push. I can’t tell you why RIM would put time into hiding a useful feature, but hey they have done weirder things. (Source) I also learned from the same source, BBNews.pl, and CBForums that if you open Application Resource Monitor and type FLTR, it enables some advanced settings.

Переслать - 4G BlackBerry PlayBook Pics Leak With Launch Coming Soon
You can see that RIM is starting to spread the first wave of 4G BlackBerry PlayBook's to carrier partners. A few sources this week have scored some pictures and screenshots of the 4G/3G PlayBook live though they don't really show anything more. Sadly reports are saying that it does not have BBM natively though they do say the 1.5Ghz processor is "snappier" and packing NFC.
