- BlackBerry 10 Cascades UI Framework Also Gains Refinement in Beta 2
When RIM announced that is had updated the BlackBerry 10 Cascades Tooling Betas I was curious to dig through the documentation for any changes to the UI Framework. Well Anders @RIM has beat me to the punch and detailed what he thinks are the most interesting changes and improvements in the Cascades UI Framework in Beta 2 vs Beta 1. RIM has also provided a guide for porting your API usage from Beta 1 to Beta 2.
The Cascades UI Framework is key to BlackBerry 10 since it will be the standard look and feel for native BlackBerry 10 apps. RIM has been refining that based on developer feedback and now we have new elements like modal dialog boxes along with improved tabbed panes for switching tabs. RIM has also added the application menu to Cascades which we are familiar with from the PlayBook swipe down menu. RIM has also improved the action bar to make it easier than ever for developer to add social and sharing options.
If you have been using the Cascades UI Framework in your BlackBerry 10 app then Anders write up on the updates is highly recommended Otherwise you can dive right in at the Cascades Microsite.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Cascades Builder & Exporter Also Get Beta 2 Update
RIM made mention of Cascades also getting in on the tooling update today but now Markus Landin, Project Manager of Cascades @RIM, detailed exactly what changed. From what I read most of the Beta 2 updates focus on improving the usability of the Cascades Builder (the Eclipse Extension) and the Cascades Exporter (The Photoshop Plugin). I won't go into the details but overall it seems like RIM is taking their developer feedback very seriously including that survey they sent out a few weeks ago and turning it into results.
Check out all the details of the BlackBerry 10 Cascades Tooling Beta 2 on the DevBlog or download the updates from the Cascades Microsite.
PS: Kudos to the witty person at RIM who mocked up the screenshot above.
I am expecting a Ludicrous Speed option in Beta 3!

Переслать - RIM Patents Detecting and Conveying Emotion in Messaging Applications
RIM is really piling it on with their patent applications and approvals. This one was applied for in January of 2011 so it is not recent but it does cover detecting emotion in your words. The idea is that your phone will detect the emotional context of your message and present that determined emotion in the message. Your emotions are captured from multiple sensors on the device (mood ring BlackBerry anyone?) and sent in a standard format.
Here is how RIM describes it:
DEVICE AND METHOD OF CONVEYING EMOTION IN A MESSAGING APPLICATION
The present disclosure provides a device and method to convey emotions in a messaging application of a mobile electronic device. An emotional context of text entered into the messaging application is determined and an implied emotional text is presented for at least a portion of the entered text in accordance with the determined emotional context. The emotional context may be determined from captured sensor data captured by one or more sensors.
In other words you may need to be more careful about how much you let your hands tremble and face contort while BBM-ing your boss.
I wonder if RIM will use automatic emoticons? via USPTO via Engadget

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Gets App World Client – RIM Invites Devs to Submit Apps!
Don't get too excited yet but Tim Neil has confirmed that the latest BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha OS update includes the PlayBook App World client. That means those of you lucky enough to have one will be able to share apps from App World. Keep in mind this is not the final BlackBerry 10 App World client but for now it gets the job done. (Screenshots as soon as my Dev Alpha finishes updating)
RIM is now inviting developers to submit their BlackBerry 10 apps to BlackBerry App World and share them with fellow BlackBerry 10 developers to get early feedback. RIM is offering this to developers to let them test with other developers. You follow the regular submission steps in App World and select the "Dev Alpha" under the ‘QNX’ Platform as your target device when you upload your product release. Once you put it "up for sale" other developers will have access to it.

Переслать - RIM Lays Out BlackBerry 10 SDK Roadmap & Promises More Details!
RIM keeps on piling on the gifts to developers today. Tim Neil just took to the BlackBerry DevBlog and games a high level overview of the upcoming SDK updates coming to the BlackBerry 10 SDKs. What is truly crazy and something I very much look forward to is that Tim is promising transparency about upcoming SDK updates. Tim clearly states this is something he has rarely seen any tech company do in this industry but he is promising top level line item deliverables for every SDK release. That means we will not be getting the nitty gritty but more the milestones and roadmaps.
Tim said these roadmaps should be coming in the form of a flight arrival board and its scheduled arrival time and status. He makes the usual disclaimers about software delivery being targets and not deadlines but he promises these roadmaps should be available in a "couple of weeks." So far he has shared this high level update schedule for the BlackBerry 10 SDK Betas:
- R4: May SDK Beta Release (first beta)
- R6: July SDK Beta Release (just launched) (We are here as of today)
- R8: September SDK Beta Release (API Freeze, Binary Compatible with Gold)
- R9: October SDK Beta Release (bug fixes)
- R10: November Gold SDK Release (bug fixes)
That means September will be the big API freeze right around BlackBerry DevCon. Check out all the rest of the details on the BlackBerry DevBlog. I will definitely be following this one closely.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Adobe AIR SDK & Android Runtime Betas Also Updated
RIM has really gone across the board with their updates to the BlackBerry 10 development toolset today. We told you about the native and WebWorks SDK beta updates but now we also have updates to the Adobe AIR SDK and the Android Runtime. The new Adobe AIR SDK beta 2 now also has support for the new Invoke Framework added in the other SDKs. RIM details how to use it in ActionScript here.
Also of note is the updated Android Runtime for BlackBerry 10 Beta. I was hoping RIM would add Ice Cream Sandwich support but that was really shooting for the moon. They have rounded out the new enhancements they introduced in the 2.1 runtime while adding support for the telephony API. That means developers have access to cell location and networking services. Check out all the new API support in the documentation or download the updated v1.2 beta of the BlackBerry Eclipse Plug-in for Android Development Tools and Command Line Tools.
NOTE: The current Dev Alpha simulator does not support the invocation framework thought the actual dev alpha devices do but hopefully that will change soon

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK Beta Gets a Refresh With Invoke, Push API, & More!
WebWorks developers creating BlackBerry 10 apps have something to look forward to today. RIM has just released a refresh of the BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK Beta to correspond with the other toolset updates. The nice part is that they are releasing this at the same time as the native SDK update though it is missing some API parity like NFC and such. The new update includes the much needed Invoke framework for interacting with other applications and services on the app. This lets apps communication and is the foundation for Super Apps.
Also of note is the addition of the new Push API that takes away the confusion between BES and BIS push which is welcome. RIM has also adopted the file access API from the HTML5 file specification so things are closer to standard. One update I like is the addition of the context menu UI access along with the pull down menu using the swipe down event.
All in all you should definitely check out the new BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK beta. You can find more details in the full announcement here.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Native SDK Beta 2 Released With Loads of New APIs
RIM really came packing with the latest update to their Native SDK for BlackBerry 10. This new Beta 2 of the NDK includes a whole boatload of new APIs for developers to play around with. The most important of them all is the new Invocation framework. This allows developers to register handlers for interapp communications. In other words this is a huge step towards super apps on BlackBerry 10. RIM has also added APIs for NFC, Audio (stereo), logging, Notifications, Barcode processing, Cascades, Location, Video, Camera, Vibration Control, Clipboard, and more.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Gets OS Update to v10.0.6.361
As we guessed RIM is using the new BlackBerry Desktop Manager in the Beta Zone to roll out a new OS update to the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha. If you are one of the lucky ones with a Dev Alpha you need to go get the latest desktop manager software from the beta zone and do a wired update. This is similar to what what we had to do when RIM released the unbricking OS earlier.

Переслать - Sketch W Friends v4.0 Released for the PlayBook
It has been awhile since we last mentioned Xlabz Sketch W Friends for the PlayBook. Since then they have gone from v2.0 to v4.0 released this week. We have no idea what is new in this update but the previous update improved performance in my opinion so I am guessing this is more bug fixing along with moderation improvements. Переслать - Nobex Radio Engineer Shares Thoughts On Cascades & BlackBerry 10
Nobex Radio has long been one of the best streaming radio solutions for BlackBerry and many other platforms. That is why I found it very reassuring to read an editorial by Nobex Radio Chief Software Architect, Jamie Julius, on Cascades development for BlackBerry 10. When compared to traditional BlackBerry Java development it is stunning to hear a developer gushing about Cascades and its capabilities. This is definitely a tide RIM has turned with BlackBerry 10 and it gives me a good feeling about BlackBerry 10's success.
If you are a developer thinking of creating native C++ apps for BlackBerry 10 then definitely check out Julius's writeup on the RIM DevBlog. Otherwise you can simply enjoy the screenshot of an early build of Nobex Radio running on BlackBerry 10.

Переслать - BlackBerry TK 3.0 Discovery Concept Phone Will Make you Drool
For some reason concept phones tend to make me have the same reaction as when I used to read popular science back in the day. I remember reading about how we would have flying cars by now but that is neither here or there. With that said the latest BlackBerry 10 design concept (This is not a real design!) by digitalhomeboy really caught my eye. He created a revision of his running line of BlackBerry concept phones. This one he dubs the BlackBerry TK 3.0 Discovery as a full touchscreen device. Definitely worth checking out if you want to drool about a possible future device…

Переслать - AT&T Announces New Shared Data Plans Starting in August
After Verizon rolled out their shared data plans it was a given that AT&T would shortly follow. AT&T confirmed that they were coming and now they have officially announced the details for AT&T Mobile Share plans. The one key difference from Verizon is that AT&T is not replacing their existing data plans which remain available and users are not required to change plans to upgrade their devices.
Essentially the new plans start offering data at $40 for 1GB a month plus $45 per smartphone and up along with unlimited voice and text messages. Things go up all the way to $200 for 20GB of data plus $30 per smartphone. The nice part is that additional feature phones can be added for $30 a month along with laptops costing $20 and tablets going for $10 per device.
Check out the details in the press release below:
AT&T GIVES CUSTOMERS MORE CHOICE WITH NEW
SHARED WIRELESS DATA PLANS
New Mobile Share Plans Allow Customers to Easily Share Data Across
Smartphones, Tablets and Other Devices
New and Current Customers Not Required To Choose or Switch to Shared Plans
DALLAS, JULY 18, 2012 — AT&T* customers will soon have more options in choosing the plan that's right for them and their mobile devices. With new AT&T Mobile Share plans, available in late August, new and existing customers can share a single bucket of data across smartphones, tablets, and other compatible devices, plus get unlimited talk and text. AT&T Mobile Share plans make it easy for customers to manage their data, voice minutes and texting, without needing to keep track of multiple plans.
Customers can select one of the new shared data plans or choose one of AT&T's existing individual or family plans. Current customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension. There are no changes to AT&T's device upgrade policy, which means customers eligible to upgrade to AT&T's best device price are not required to switch plans. The new plans will also be available for business customers.
With AT&T Mobile Share plans, customers start by choosing how much data they want each month, then choose up to 10 devices to attach to their shared plan, one of which must be a smartphone. Each plan includes tethering and unlimited domestic calls and texts for smartphones and basic or quick messaging phones. The larger the data bucket you choose, the less you pay per gigabyte and the less you pay for each smartphone added to the shared plan.
AT&T Mobile Share allows customers to essentially build a plan to fit their devices and usage. Customers who are more data-centric can choose a larger data bucket. Customers who typically use more voice than data can add multiple smartphones and basic phones and opt for a smaller data bucket.
"We offer customers a broad choice and the best lineup of plans, now enhanced by Mobile Share," said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility. "With these new plans, the more you share, the more you save. They'll be a good fit for a variety of new and existing customers. But if customers want to stay on their current plan or choose from our existing plans, they can do that, too. It's their choice.
"Today we think of people's smartphones and tablets sharing a bucket of data. But in the future we'll see health care monitors, connected cars, security systems and other devices in the home all connected to the mobile Internet," said Christopher. "Our Mobile Share plans are simple, easy and a great value for individuals or families with multiple mobile Internet devices."
Mobile Share plans give customers more control over how, where and on what device they use data — which has become more important as people use more data devices. You can choose to use more of your data bucket on your tablet, for example, or tap into your data bucket only when needed for devices you use occassionally. And by consolidating data plans, you can take advantage of any data you currently have unused each month by efficiently sharing it across devices.
"The 'more you share, the more you save' concept is one that will resonate well with customers because of the value provided through the Mobile Share data plans themselves and in smartphone connection fees," said Roger Entner, Founder and Lead Analyst of Recon Analytics. "AT&T also is providing its customers with flexibility and choice by keeping its existing data plans and not requiring customers to move to Mobile Share unless they want to. It's a win-win for both AT&T and its customers."
To help customers track their data usage, AT&T keeps users informed with courtesy alerts as they near their data allowance for the month. Also, customers can check their usage at anytime online, through the myAT&T mobile app, or by calling *DATA# from their mobile phone.
Each data plan also includes access to more than 30,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots — the nation's largest Wi-Fi network** among wireless carriers — at no additional charge. Wi-Fi usage at public hotspots, home or office does not count toward the monthly wireless data plan usage.
Customers can learn more about the new plans and determine which plan is best for them at www.att.com/mobileshare.

Переслать - Devs: RIM Updates App World Vendor Agreement & Merchant of Record
RIM has sent out an update to their previously revised App World Vendor agreement that clarifies some of the issues vendors had with the previous addendum and clarifies others. First of all RIM no longer requires all payments inside apps to go through App World's Payment Service for in app payments. On the other hand RIM has clarified their requirement to be paid "Secondary Revenue Fees" of 30% for all transactions that happen outside of App World and don't go through the Payment Service.
Here are the highlights RIM pointed out:
As we previously communicated to you, in the coming months we will be rolling out a new Payment Service named BlackBerry Commerce which will transition RIM to become the Merchant of Record for BlackBerry App World Credit Card & PayPal only transactions. The goal is to enhance the distribution experience, make it easier for you to administer payment acceptance and to ensure compliance with the tax requirements of many countries that Vendors sell into through BlackBerry App World. At launch, BlackBerry Commerce will become the primary Merchant of Record for App World transactions through Credit Card & PayPal.
The BlackBerry Commerce Value Proposition
- A seamless transaction for customers to deal directly with Research In Motion E-Commerce which improves the overall experience, provides a simplified and flexible payment process and in turn drives customer loyalty
- Enable a wider variety of payment types to tailor and personalize how customers buy products and services demonstrating that we understand and cater to their needs
- Research In Motion E-Commerce will bring new and innovative payment types to customers increasing their choice, flexibility and ease of transacting
- Facilitate compliance with the tax requirements of many countries
Important Details
- The primary change in the Vendor Agreement is the removal of the requirement to exclusively use the BlackBerry Payment Service for in-app product transactions. The definition of Secondary Revenue and the applicability of the Secondary Revenue Fee have been clarified. Additionally, the countries associated with the agent appointments for the RIM E-Commerce Inc. and RIM E-Commerce S.à.r.l. entities have been changed such that all countries previously associated with RIM E-Commerce Inc. (other than Canada) are now associated with RIM E-Commerce S.à.r.l.
- We will require certain Tax Information. Information regarding the documentation we require and instructions on where to upload it to the Vendor Portal can be found below
- We will begin to issue Vendor payments in Fall 2012
If you are a vendor I HIGHLY recommend reading the full documents and checking out all the changes. You can find them below:

Переслать - Free Minimal HTTP Web Server For Your PlayBook
Now this is a concept that I can see going places on the PlayBook and BlackBerry 10. Jason Ernst has released a very minimalist HTTP Web Server app for the PlayBook that lets you serve HTML pages or files from your PlayBook. For now it serves out the files in your Share/Documents folder on port 8080 and does not allow you to change the port or put any security on the page.
For now this may be useful for quickly sharing a file with a friend on the local network or doing some quick HTML design. Once you fire up the app the documents can be access from another pc by going to http://your.playbooks.ip.address:8080.
Check out Web Server free in App World. Hopefully Jason keeps on updating this one! (ImgCredit)

Переслать - RIM Launches BlackBerry Jam Developer Rewards & Badges
This week RIM sent me an email saying that I unlocked the BlackBerry 10 Jam badge for attending the first annual BlackBerry 10 Jam event in Orlando. I logged into the new BlackBerry Developer Zone and there in the top right corner I redeemed my badge and noticed a bunch of new badges that I had achieved or could achieve (I have 5 of the 17). Better yet RIM had awarded me 610 BlackBerry Developer Zone Rewards Points that I could redeem for BlackBerry swag.
I immediately ordered a BlackBerry Jam hoodie for 500 points with many more goodies to win. You can redeem the points for everything from a messenger bag to a free pass to BlackBerry World or other events.
If you are a developer I highly recommend checking out the new Developer Zone rewards area and seeing what you can achieve. Kudos to the RIM team for following up on their promise to reward developers for their engagement in the community!
