- RIM Awarded Patent for BlackBerry 10 Predictive Keyboard
When RIM first showed off the BlackBerry 10 keyboard during BlackBerry World in May many were wondering if copycats would be released before BlackBerry 10. Now it looks like we have a bit better understanding why RIM is not too worried about competitors stealing their innovations. Engadget spotted a patent award for RIM for a "handheld electronic device with text disambiguation." Essentially that means a logic based keyboard that recommends the next output based on a learning function beyond simple frequency of use.
Here is how RIM describes it:
A handheld electronic device includes a reduced QWERTY keyboard and is enabled with disambiguation software. The device provides output in the form of a default output and a number of variants. The output is based largely upon the frequency, i.e., the likelihood that a user intended a particular output, but various features of the device provide additional variants that are not based solely on frequency and rather are provided by various logic structures resident on the device. The device enables editing during text entry and also provides a learning function that allows the disambiguation function to adapt to provide a customized experience for the user. The disambiguation function can be selectively disabled and an alternate keystroke interpretation system provided. Additionally, the device can facilitate the selection of variants by displaying a graphic of a special <NEXT> key of the keypad that enables a user to progressively select variants generally without changing the position of the user’s hands on the device.
The whole patent application actually seems quite interesting and makes me wonder what it will mean for alternate keyboards like Swype and SwiftKey on Android and other platforms. Check out the full patent filing here at the USPTO.

Переслать - Dumb Phones Become "Drunk Phones"?
As I wrote recently, many smartphone users don’t relish the idea of losing their devices. As I also mentioned, some of the more popular places for smartphones to be lost include bars and nightclubs. Well, it seems as though these two facts are combining to form a new tech consumption phenonemon.
According to this article on CNET, many young’uns who are concerned about the possibility of spilling drinks on their smartphones or losing them in a drunken stupor have begun carrying lower-end phones with them for their alcohol adventures. So dumb phones, which in these circumstances have been dubbed “drunk phones”, give the youngsters the ability to access integral phone features on their nights out without the risk of their losing an expensive piece of technology.
Who says kids these days can’t think for themselves?

Переслать - easyDial Touchscreen Dialpad for the BlackBerry Bold 9900
I know this might sound a bit odd but I have actually had a couple people asking me for such an app so I thought it might be worth mentioning. With the touchscreen on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 some users have wanted to be able to dial phone numbers using the touchscreen instead of the smaller keyboard buttons. I cannot fathom why you would want to do this but the people who asked were willing to pay for the pleasure.
If you were looking for such a solution you need look no further. easyDial will pop up a dialpad on your BlackBerry Bold 9900s screen for you to punch in numbers. You can find easyDial for $0.99 in App World.

I am not sure what they are waiting for but it looks like T-Mobile will be getting the low cost introductory smartphone BlackBerry Curve 9320 in September. Переслать - Devs: Restore or Unbrick your BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Now Possible
Some developers who went to BlackBerry 10 Jam or the World Tour and did a security wipe of their BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha realized a big pain point of the device. If you wiped it then you would lose apps like the Camera and such along with a few other features. Shane over @OSBB noticed that RIM confirmed in the Beta Zone forums that they have made the OS unbricking process possible. For now that means offering the original OS 10.0.4.187 (some people were running 10.0.4.197) for users to update from the dev alpha.
The trick is you need the new BlackBerry Desktop Manager Software from the Beta Zone to restore your Dev Alpha. The devices are still scheduled to hopefully get a new OS update this month so hopefully this the first step of that happening.

Переслать - Twitter v3.1.0.20 Comes Out of Beta and Lands in App World
RIM set the stage for this update in the Beta Zone by stating that v3.1.0.17 was the Gold Release and would hopefully be released publicly if all went well. It seems like that is the case since we have received multiple reports from readers that App World is now pushing v3.1.0.20.
If the original v3.1 Beta release notes hold true this update brings:
- Updated Tweet Details Screen – Clicking a Tweet now brings you to a content-rich Tweet details screen, designed to give you more information around the Tweet. Geotagged Tweets will show mini maps, Tweeted photos will appear larger, and Twitter conversations will be easier to follow. In addition, you will be able to see who's Retweeted a Tweet, and by whom it has been Retweeted. To see a person's profile screen, just click the profile picture again.
- Undo Retweet - You can now undo a Retweet that you may have mistakenly Retweeted. You can undo a Retweet by using familiar actions used to delete a Tweet. In addition, the new Tweet details screen allows you to select the Retweet button to undo a Retweet.
- Right to Left Language Support
- Additional Languages – Finnish, Arabic & Hebrew
You can find the latest version of Twitter in App World

Переслать - RIM's CMO Frank Boulben Shares His Thoughts in New Interview
We have all be waiting for years for RIM to get a new CMO who will revamp RIM's marketing strategy. The position has been left more of less vacant for a few years but Thorsten Heins recently named Frank Boulben as the man who will spearhead BlackBerry 10's resurgence. Kevin over @CrackBerry had a chance to sit down with Boulben and get his answers on 12 key questions about Boulben's strategy for BlackBerry 10. It is a very insightful read though it does not contain any headliners. It is starting to become apparent that Boulben is definitely the man for the job and now we just have to wait for him to deliver!
I recommend checking out the full interview over @CrackBerry for all the details. Let us know what you think of Boulben and what he should do for RIM's marketing message in the future!
