- Pacemaker v1.1.1 Release Brings Stability & Removes Time Bomb
Pacemaker did an awesome job with their music DJ app for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Both the lite and full version of the app were updated this week to v1.1.1 and address one of the main weaknesses in the app. According to the official @pacemaker Twitter account it adds stability updates along with the removal of a nasty bug that was left from the beta version. You should update because if you don't that beta bug will disable the app on July 1st.
Also worth noting is the fact that Pacemaker has answered about the differences between the full and lite version and clarified that there is no way to upgrade between the two.

Переслать - RIM Lists APIs Coming to BlackBerry 10 SDK Betas On the Road to Gold
I am really loving the openness RIM has provided into the development of BlackBerry 10 and the tools for developers. The latest in this vein is an article by Tim Neil detailing what to expect in the current "First Beta" of the BlackBerry 10 SDK tools that are available now. On top of that he makes it very clear that this is only the first of many beta's in the cycle to a Gold release for BlackBerry 10 development tools. They are trying to minimize any changes that may require you to change functionality supported in a previous beta for compatibility.
What I found most interesting was Tim reiterating that:
RIM has a strong heritage in delivering fantastic deep integration into the core BlackBerry experience and providing a differentiating factor for your application on the platform, and this will continue with BlackBerry 10. As we evolve the BlackBerry 10 SDKs, these deep integration APIs will be made available, but they aren't quite ready for 3rd party consumption yet.
He then went on to list some of the APIs coming:
These APIs are still seeing refactoring as we move through all the use cases of our core applications. We want to ensure that both our core apps are using the same APIs as 3rd party developers and that the APIs see minimal changes after they are made available in a Beta.
I won't list all of the APIs that are coming, but I'll list the hot topics where I usually get inquiries:
- BBM™
- PIM (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Notes)
- Messages/Email
- NFC
- Share/Invoke Framework
- Adding your menu item to an existing app
- Invoking and being invoked by another app
- String pattern registry
- Geocoding & reverse geocoding
- Bluetooth®
All these and more will be coming in follow-up Beta releases, so make sure you grab the SDKs and start building the core of your application to ensure that you're ready to integrate these features as soon as they're available!
I am really waiting for the PIM and Messages API integration since that will start the super app craze. Anyone else excited!

Переслать - App World 3.1.4.20 FINALLY Adds Upgrade All Option in Beta Zone
Since App World launched I have been waiting for this feature and it is finally here. Until now you had to update each app in App World separately. Now RIM has finally added the ability to "Upgrade All" using the new "Upgrade All" button. You can also share your list of installed apps over NFC and view lists of installed apps from friends.
The full change log includes:
- Download all app updates with the new "Upgrade All" button
- Share your list of installed apps using NFC technology
- View lists of installed apps from multiple friends using NFC technology
- Connect BlackBerry App World to BBM to display a variety of new BlackBerry App World actions in your BBM personal message
- Finnish language support
- Various bug fixes
Kudos to the App World team for getting this out in the Beta Zone here. Hopefully they are working day and night on coupon and promo code support…

Переслать - BlackBerry Joins the App Alliance & Encourages Devs to Follow
The Application Developers Alliance (ADA) nonprofit started out at CES 2012 this January and has since signed on some nice partners. The ADA was designed to help developers organize while generating revenue for their services from sponsors and membership fees. Their main industry backer seems to have been AT&T but now RIM has added themselves to that list.
RIM sent out an email to registered developers letting them know RIM has joined the ADA. They sum it up by saying that:
The Application Developers Alliance is the voice of the development industry. We’ve joined the Alliance as a corporate partner, and invite you to join for free adding yourself to the network of nearly 7,000 independent developers who are coming together to help define our industry. Start benefiting from your free membership with discounts, event calendars, job postings and more!

Переслать - Another Leaked BlackBerry 10 Slide Shows Augmented QWERTY+Touch Keyboard
The designs in this strung along leak for the N-Series and L-Series BlackBerry 10 devices seem primitive for this stage of the game but may give us some insight into RIM's plans. Many users have been wondering what will happen to the BlackBerry classic trackball since it is missing on the BlackBerry 10 devices. According to this slide scored by N4BB the N-Series QWERTY keyboard packing BlackBerry 10 device will combine the touchscreen with the keyboard. It will offer an augmented touch section of the extended keyboard commands for things like word completion and umlat selection overlay.
This might cramp things a bit on the 720×720 pixel screen but I do like the idea. Still one of my favorite parts about the trackpad is the ability to use the phone with one hand. Hopefully RIM manages to incorporate that in BlackBerry 10.

Переслать - WordPress for BlackBerry PlayBook v2.1.3 Squashes Some Bugs
I have been using WordPress for BlackBerry PlayBook since it launched in February. The app is really an Android port but it works quite well especially in the latest PlayBook dev beta. They just updated the BlackBerry PlayBook version together with the Android source to v2.1.3. Digging through the change log this release includes:
- Fixed account setup connection issues for certain self-hosted blogs.
- New Account button added to the action bar’s blog selector.
- Reliability improvements.
You can check out the details in the 2.1.3 ticket milestone but either way I recommend downloading the updated WordPress for BlackBerry PlayBook.

Переслать - Leaked Slides Show BBM on BlackBerry 10 Concepts
After being treated to some leaked data yesterday on the rumored L-Series (full touchscreen) and N-Series (QWERTY keyboard) devices we have another set of slides. This time N4BB has scored some mockup's of what could be BBM on BlackBerry 10. Nothing shown contradicts the wireframes and details Shiladitya Sircar, Director of R&D BBM at RIM, showed off at BlackBerry 10 Jam 2012 which is good to see. The mockups seem to use the similar shout out boxes and design of the current BBM chats with some Cascades tweaks.
Another thing noted in the slides is the fact that RIM has opened up BBM to themes to save battery life by using a darker theme and colors. The slides claim that with a black theme battery use can be lowered 25% especially with OLED screens that are naturally black. Check the slides out for yourself and let us know what you think!

Переслать - Slacker Adds New Personalize Lifestyle Stations with ABC Content
Slacker let us know about their latest effort to further differentiate themselves from competitors such as Pandora. They just announced a new partnership with ABC to bring personalized lifestyle stations to Slacker with content from sources including Esquire, Car & Driver, Consumer Reports, Popular Mechanics, Complex Magazine and GQ. Topics include Style & Fashion, Cars & Gear, Travel & Adventure, Entertainment, Money, Relationships, Green Living, Parenting and Home Improvement.
The most interesting part is that Slacker is letting you customize the lifestyle content just like you can using their ESPN sports station. You can prioritize topics or even narrow it down with stereotypical "male centric" or "female centric" content.
Definitely worth checking out at www.Slacker.com. The content should be available as you read this including through their free BlackBerry app and is available to all levels of Slacker subscribers.

Переслать - RIM's Senior VP of Design Todd Wood Speaks Out
Starting last year Todd Wood, SVP Design at RIM, has shared sporadic details about the design process at RIM. His latest addition is a short interview with Donny from the official BlackBerry blog. In it Todd discusses the design process from RIM's 3Ds of design (Definition, Development and Delivery) to consumer panels. One of Wood's personal inspiration sources is the Milan Furniture Fair in April where designers show off their designs from around the world.
One of the other interesting facts shared by Wood was that recent customer feedback has shown the importance of design up top with the fundamentals of internet access on smartphones. It is followed by the importance of the display and keyboard choice.

Переслать - T-Mobile Swapping Spectrum With Verizon for LTE Rollout
T-Mobile and Verizon came out today announcing that they have come to an agreement for swapping spectrum on the secondary market. This is all contingent based on Verizon's dealings with SpectrumCo, Leap Wireless, and Cox and is dependent on those sales being approved. It gives T-Mobile some much needed AWS spectrum that they use and will incorporate into their LTE rollout next year. This AWS spectrum also benefits Verizon which will help them cover 22 million people and net them some cash in the end.
All in all both carriers are touting the benefits (Verizon/T-Mobile) of the secondary market to gain spectrum. It should be interesting to see how they use it since T-Mobile desperately needs a 4G LTE network.

Переслать - The Economist Comes to the BlackBerry PlayBook
The Economist website looks really sharp in the PlayBook browser but now they have taken things one step further with a PlayBook App. The app is really just a teaser app unless you have an Economist subscription (Digital or Print) though there is some free content available (Editor Highlights). Caching is also nice though I have not had a chance to test it out yet.
Features include:
- Each week’s issue available from 9pm London time on Thursday
- Download up to four issues to your BlackBerry PlayBook to read without an internet connection (if enabled in Settings)
- Switch easily between reading and streaming The Economist in audio (when connected to the internet)
- Subscribe from within the app and receive full access to The Economist on BlackBerry PlayBook, Android, iPhone and iPad and The Economist online

Переслать - Sources Close to RIM Say Splitting RIM In Two is a 'Silly Fantasy'
I have been trying to avoid that recent rumor started by the Sunday Times of London that we mentioned earlier today. It went against many of the firm statements that Thorsten Heins made when taking the reins at RIM including them dedicated to keep services and hardware together. Now the Globe and Mail's long time RIM correspondent Ian Marlow mentioned that he heard from several sources close to RIM who:
dismissed the news as "a silly fantasy," and "one of the most ridiculous ideas I have heard in a while."
That more or less sums up what we have been hearing for awhile along with Ian hearing on Sunday from two former RIM executive that:
…top managers do not currently take the idea seriously, and one said that "splitting the two would accomplish nothing." According to one of these people, RIM’s current CEO Thorsten Heins remains committed to the idea of RIM as an integrated company and RIM co-founder and vice-chairman Mike Lazaridis doesn’t believe the idea of breaking apart the company would work either.
My take is that there may be some truth in this rumor in the fact that RIM may consider some partnership for hardware manufacturing or for licensing certain devices though this is nothing new. Heins has mentioned the possibility of RIM moving in that direction before though he has clearly said that one of RIM's main strengths is the combination of the RIM software designed for the RIM hardware.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 L-Series and N-Series Specs Leak
Lucas over at N4BB has made monday morning a bit better for us. He has posted an article entailing the specs of both the L-Series (all touch ) and N-Series (QWERTY BB) BlackBerry 10 devices. Now these specs are only really about the screen, and the device dimension, but it lets us know what we are looking at size wise. Keep reading after the break for more details.
The first rumoured devices were to be the London and the Nevada, and it seems that they have just shortened it to be L-Series and N-Series. We all know that the all touch L-Series will launch first, and here are what we can see for specs.
BlackBerry L-series:
- 768×1280 screen resolution
- 55mm wide
- 356 PPI
Essentially it is the same screen as the Developer Alpha that some of us were lucky enough to receive, and mainly all that’s going to be changing is the form factor, and the styling of the device. One of the great things to me is that the screen on the L-Series will actually be a better screen than the iPhone 4/4s. Another detail you can get from the picture above is the UI structure of the screen. It lets us see where and how big some of the UI items will be on screen.
The Nevada, now known as the N-Series is what a lot of die hard QWERTY users are waiting for, and it seems that the first release will be sporting an OLED display. From the looks of the specs for size, it could be a great device, while using all of the screen for BB10 greatness.
BlackBerry N-series:
- 720×720 screen resolution
- 52 – 53mm wide
- 330 PPI
I know we are all waiting to see actual production units specs and pics, but this information is enough to keep us for a little while.

Переслать - Rumor has RIM Splitting Off Handset Manufacturing Division
You have to love the rumor mill of late. The latest RIM rumor has unnamed sources telling The Sunday Times (Reuters) that RIM is considering splitting their business in two. That would separate the handset manufacturing division from the rest of the company. There really is nothing much substantiating this rumor but I felt we had to mention it since it has taken over the web this weekend. Potential named buyers are Amazon and Facebook who may also be interested in RIM's wireless network. Another possibility is opening the company to selling a large stake to a bigger company such as Microsoft.
RIM has already said that they have hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital to investigate strategic options so this is probably just one of the many options on the table. RIM did provide a comment stating exactly that:
RIM has hired advisers to help the company examine ways to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities, and strategic business model alternatives. We believe the best way to drive value for our stakeholders is to execute on our plan to turn the company around. This remains true.
Either way we should find out some updates this week during RIM's earnings call on June 28th.
