- Spotify for BlackBerry Comes Out of Beta for Certain BlackBerry Devices
Spotify has been running a public beta of their BlackBerry app for awhile now and Deb let us know that it is now out of beta. The app lets you listen to your Spotify music but is sadly only supporting certain BlackBerry models on GSM networks. Specifically it claims to support the 9900 Bold, 9780 Bold, 9700 Bold, 9300 Curve, 9000 Bold, 8520 Curve and specifically says that Torch models or CDMA phones are currently supported.
You can download the Spotify app now in App World as long as you live in a country where Spotify is available.

Переслать - Smart Lock Combines Slide to Unlock Screen With Profile Switcher
A friend of mine showed me Smart Lock on his BlackBerry Torch 9860 and I was impressed. It combines the overdone Slide to Lock/Unlock replacement screen with a few twists. First of all it adds a slide to change profile option which is especially useful on the 9860 that does not have a keyboard for you to hold down the Q button. It will also show you BBM, SMS, and email notifications along with the senders name.
Features include:
- BlackBerry® Messenger, SMS and Email notifications even see senders name for SMS and Email!
- Switch between any two profiles with the swipe of a finger
- Fully customize screen with custom backgrounds, font colors and icon colors
- Lock on call, on device start, on lock key, or after a timeout
- Allow emergency calls to any number while locked
- Add to System Menu for quick locking
- Optional sounds on unlock
- Option of choosing in which apps you want to disable this app.
Check out Smart Lock in App World for $0.99. Let us know if you spot any other apps that do something similar.

Переслать - More Confirmation That RIM Will Disable & Replace Dev Alpha's After Launch
While we were at BlackBerry 10 Jam 2012 in Orlando RIM mentioned that they will be replacing the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices they were distributing. The catch was you had to submit a BlackBerry 10 app to App World and then you were eligible for a special edition BlackBerry 10 device at launch. Lucas @N4BB received confirmation from RIM again that they will be disabling the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices after the launch of BlackBerry 10 when it will automatically brick itself. As RIM promised before you can then send it in for your replacement BlackBerry 10 Special Edition device if you have an app accepted in App World.
Lucas did hear that the BlackBerry London is an earlier revision of the BlackBerry 10 final hardware and is what RIM will be giving out as a working special edition BlackBerry 10 device. I Think that would be a pretty sweet deal though personally I like the softer edges of current BlackBerry devices.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour New York Recap
Over a hundred people gathered in the Millennium Broadway Hotel in Midtown Manhattan this Tuesday as RIM brought its BlackBerry 10 Jam Tour to New York. The tour, which was making its seventh stop (out of a scheduled 23), was designed to acquaint developers with the new BlackBerry 10 (due out later this year) so as to help them in their goals of creating useful applications for BlackBerry users. As RIM VP Martyn Mallick said (and as the proceedings confirmed), RIM is committed to developers, which ultimately leads to being committed to end users.
(Enterprise and Native track sessions)Coming out as committed to its developers and end users was a shrewd move by RIM, as various speakers were clearly aware of the negative public perception which certainly helped cause its recent stock dive. (RIM's stock value of 10.33 is less than half of what it was a year ago.)
Mallick even took the interesting angle of bringing up myths about Blackberry development so as to debunk them – his counter-arguments were convincing, but it was extremely telling that at this gathering of BlackBerry app developers an RIM VP had to convince the developers that developing for BlackBerry is neither very confusing nor a shrinking field. Somewhat similarly defensive sentiments were expressed by Gary Klasset who said that the BB 10 was RIM's opportunity to correct its mistakes and build and extend on its past experiences.
While there may have been something of a thread of re-branding sewn in different speeches, it was hardly the theme of the morning. The theme, perhaps, was the user-friendliness of both the new BlackBerry 10 and its app development.
The user-friendliness of the product was demonstrated by showing off some of its really cool features. Supreme among these (and the precipitator of the greatest round of applause of the morning) was the ability to roll back in time a portion of a picture in which different people had themselves readied at different moments. Another compelling feature showed was the touch screen keyboard which anticipates the user's next words (i.e. suggesting words like "tomorrow" and "later" after you've typed in "Let's meet"). This feature seemed to be both helpful and easy to use. Simpler but important things like a user interface with much fewer buttons than previous models (allowing greater room for content) and what seemed to be an incredibly easy flow from inbox to email to attachment were also demonstrated.
The ease of development for the new BlackBerry 10 will be real, as RIM has already set up developer sites to help its app-builders construct their apps. Ease of use is also, of course, an inherent benefit of BlackBerry 10's support of development in C++, Adobe Air, Android Runtime as well other SDKs.
The buzzwords of the morning session were clearly "Flow, Connect and Extend." "Flow" is the goal of the BlackBerry 10 – to seamlessly integrate the user experience with other devices and life as a whole. "Connect," on a more basic level, is what essentially all mobile devices are for – connectivity. BlackBerry 10's social media integration as well as its incredibly popular BBM (56 million active users) are designed to help its users connect and interact with other Blackberry users as well as users of other devices. "Extend" represents the integration with other facets of life – beyond the smartphone.
Before the lunch break, various developers pitched their ideas to the whole audience in what were referred to as "lightning pitches." I was personally interested in an app that one gentleman created which, utilizing GPS signals, would sound an alarm at a pre-determined distance from a train stop to prevent over-sleeping. (I’m not sure if this app is really geared for the drowsy or the intoxicated.) The other interesting pitched apps included two stock apps (one which researched the prices of stocks at given times, the other which would tell you what, say, a 100-year-old $50 investment in Coca-Cola would be worth today) as well as apps for photo-lovers and even the segment of app-users which is attracted to horticulture.
All in all, the event was informative and exciting, displaying an array of awesome features on the stunning new BlackBerry 10 device as well as providing important information for the enrichment of developers. As RIM's video introduction stated at the beginning of the event "The waiting is the hardest part!"

Переслать - Nokia Confirms Scalado Camera Commitment to RIM But No Others
Recently Nokia acquired Scalado which is behind many photo technologies including the cool time warp feature RIM showed off in the BlackBerry 10 camera. After RIM showed off this feature at BlackBerry World it was confirmed that RIM licensed this technology/IP from Scalado for BlackBerry 10. After Nokia's acquisition of Scalado some were worried what this would mean for RIM and BlackBerry 10. While the obvious answer was that the license would remain intact others needed more. Well now we have it. The Verge has confirmed with Nokia that :
"We’re doing it in such a way that Scalado can…fully deliver on commitments they’ve made to all of their partners, that includes RIM,"
On the other hand Nokia said that they have no plans to license the technology further especially to their Windows Phone competitors. That actually turns out to be good news for RIM since now that IP will be a more differentiating feature with limited use beyond BlackBerry 10 and Nokia phones.

Right after we mentioned TalkBox's updated public beta of their app yesterday they released a new version 0.930. At that time we did not have the change log for that recently released update so we asked the developer. Переслать - RIM Confirms Current Layoffs
We have been hearing rumors about RIM doing a large scale layoff as part of their strategy. Thorsten Heins confirmed as much during their last earnings call where he said that it is part of RIM's initiative to cut down operating costs by a billion dollars by the end of fiscal 2013. Now RIM has confirmed that these headcount reductions are part of this initiative. The Record and other sources claim that these layoffs are mainly going to hit sales and manufacturing which makes sense as RIM winds down the current lines of BlackBerry devices during the ramp up of BlackBerry 10 up to its launch. Here is what RIM said in confirming the layoffs:
"RIM has committed to achieving significant efficiencies and operating cost reductions over the course of this fiscal year. Headcount reductions are part of this initiative." – Tenille Kennedy (RIM Spokesperson)
The count for this layoff round is rumored to be around 2,000 employees bringing RIM to about 14,500 or so but some rumors have RIM lowering that even further. This is all conjecture for now but we are hearing from some RIM sources about the current layoffs though morale still seems to be positive with some serious pride in BlackBerry 10. To all of you who are leaving RIM we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and we are sad to see you go.

Jason let me know that TalkBox has updated their recently launched public beta of their BlackBerry smartphone client. - Better battery management for BIS push notification service.
- Added hot-keys for easy and convenient use: To Top(T), To Bottom(B), Scroll Down(X), Scroll Up(E), Change Page( P), Refresh(R ), Search(S), Reconnect(Z), Quit(Q)

The BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour has been hitting cities across the world and it is definitely catching developer interest. RIM announced that they have opened up registration for the events in Dubai and Cape Town this week. That means you just need to head to www.blackberryjamworldtour.com to register. They also supposedly still have a few seats left for Sydney on July 12th and other locations.

Переслать - More Hands On Video of BlackBerry 10 Features on the Dev Alpha
Since RIM first showed off some sweet features of BlackBerry 10 at BlackBerry World they have not really been allowing the press to take any videos of it in action. They have allowed the press (specifically in London) to play with the device and take pictures but not video. David pointed out to me that they seem to have allowed CNET along with The Verge and Engadget to actually take a video of the BlackBerry 10 features we saw previously but with a slightly different context. The items shown in the video, flow/peek/keyboard, are the same but its worth checking out:
