- iOS Emulator for PlayBook Gets More Video Proof
We told you earlier this week about reports of an iOS emulator running iOS apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook and the video proof that accompanied it. Kevin over @CrackBerry was rightfully skeptical of the developer, businesscat2000, and asked for some more evidence. Well now Kevin has the evidence and he is also convinced that it is real. The developer has even explained how he managed to get it to work and answered many of the more technical questions about the implementation. Businesscat2000 has even made the challenge asking any dev to send him an iOS app (within certain specs) and he will run it in the emulator. Check out the video at the end of this article to see the app Kevin sent him to test.
The one question I am dying to know the answer too is one that businesscat2000 has yet to answer. What are his goals with this emulator? I really hope he releases it to the public since there are quite a few interesting things that could come out of it beyond simply running iOS apps. Here is to hoping RIM hires Businesscat2000 to work on BlackBerry 10.

Переслать - ESPN Launches Six New LIVE Slacker Radio Stations
Slacker just further reaffirmed their commitment to sports radio with a new offering from ESPN radio. They announced that they are releasing six new national, regional, and Spanish language ESPN stations dedicated to live streaming of ESPN shows and sporting events. That is all now accessible on their website and through the Slacker BlackBerry app. The live ESPN Radio stations on Slacker include the ESPN Radio and ESPN Deportes Radio networks, which stream sporting events and hosted programs, as well as four regional stations featuring programming for New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas.
According to the announcement:
For the next 30 days, all six live ESPN stations will be available to all Slacker Radio listeners. After this period these stations will be available to all Slacker Radio Plus and Slacker Premium Radio subscribers. The previously released interactive ESPN Radio station will remain free and available to all Slacker listeners.
This seems like another way Slacker is trying to convince users to jump on the Plus or Premium bandwagon. Personally I am loving the Premium subscription. Check out the stations at www.slacker.com or download the app from the same link.

Переслать - Read It Offline RSS reader & Readability Client for the PlayBook
I have been looking for a solid offline content reader for my PlayBook and have been toying with possible solutions. The latest one I have found (thanks Peter) is called Read It Offline by The Pumping Lemma Company. The app lets you save articles and their images to read offline later on your PlayBook. With a hookup to the awesome Readability service it will also save articles that span multiple pages along with summarized feeds.
Features include:
- Downloads your RSS feed articles and images to your PlayBook for offline viewing
- Grabs the entire article – not just the one paragraph summary typically found in an RSS feed – so you won’t be left with only half of the story
- Handles multiple page articles by retrieving all pages and saving them as one long piece of content on your PlayBook
- Full offline support for images, saving them directly to your PlayBook
- It’s a Readability client, too! Save articles to your PlayBook directly from your PC or Mac’s browser
- A full screen reader mode for maximum reading comfort
- Add and remove articles from your list of Favourites with one easy tap of an icon
Check out the app homepage at www.readitoffline.com along with the Readability service. You can purchase Read It Offline for $1.99 in App World.

Переслать - Apple's Slightly Modified iOS 6 Features Are a Blessing for RIM
The tech world got hit with a flood of announcements yesterday with the Apple WWDC going on in San Francisco. Apple announced a load of new product improvements but most people were interested in iOS 6 which is coming this fall. Apple detailed many of the 200 improvements coming in iOS 6 for the iPad and iPhone but most were let down. Most of the announcements Apple made for iOS were all refinements of a legacy platform rather than game changers (Bla1ze @CrackBerry has a good breakdown).
One of the main factors that analysts have been hammering RIM for is that BlackBerry 10 will not be able to compete with iOS 6 and Android 4.0/5.0. Now we know that on the software front the bar has not really been raised though we will have to wait for later this year to see about the hardware. In other words RIM's competition is not exactly standing still but they have not moved far or unveiled anything that should change RIM's plans.
Many of the features that were announced during Apple's press conference seem laughable to BlackBerry users though it clearly reminds me of RIM back around BlackBerry OS 4.5 through 6.0. For example, here are a couple of features that iOS 6 is finally going to bring:
- Different email signatures for different email accounts
- Setting a song as your alarm clock sound
- Customizing the vibration for alerts
- A do not disturb feature
- You can now finally attach images and videos to emails from the compose screen (Seriously this is a new feature!)
- Uploading images from web forms on websites (I was shocked this was not possible previously)
Don't get me wrong there are some cool improvements like Facetime over cellular connections, more Siri flexibility, and synced tabs in Safari but none of these are really game changers but merely refinements of current features. In other words RIM can breath a sigh of relief that Apple is just bringing a slightly modified (but highly successful) iOS to compete head to head with BlackBerry 10 this fall. BlackBerry 10 on the other hand is packing some revolutionary technology and software that goes back to the roots of what made BlackBerry the perfect tool for "those who DO" in the first place.
Let us know what you thought of iOS 6 and what it means for RIM and BlackBerry 10!

Переслать - Verizon Launches "Shared Everything" Shared Data & Unlimited Voice Plans
I was really excited when I first heard carriers were working on shared data plans but Verizon's new "Shared Everything" plan has me wary. There are some nice perks like no longer getting charged extra to use a phone as a mobile hotspot and throwing in unlimited voice and messaging. The thing is it seems like Verizon still wants to fleece customers by charging them a different price for the up to 10 devices you can add to a shared plan.
To hook up a smartphone it will cost you $40 compared to a basic phone at $30. Jetpacks/USBs/notebooks/netbooks will cost you $20 and tablets are $10 extra. You then have to fork over $50 for 1GB of shared data then it goes up to 2GB for $60, 4GB for $70, and 6GB for $80. New customers will be forced to use the new plans when they go into effect on June 28th though old customers do not have to change plans. There is the possibility to save some money but some customers may end up paying more for less.
Check out all the details in the press release or try their online tool at www.verizonwireless.com/ShareEverything.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour Exciting Developers Of All Ages
I have been hearing reports from developers after each stop of the BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour and the reviews have been pretty solid. It seems like RIM is finally getting their messaging right to developers along with having the tools they need to develop BlackBerry 10 apps. RIM is hitting hard with HTML5 and Cascades/NDK development for BlackBerry 10. One dev in Milan told me that he was shocked to see developers embracing RIM tools when compared to RIM's previous history.
What really impressed me was the latest recap RIM posted from their World Tour stop in Santa Clara. This was their second stop in the US which is right near the tech heartbeat of California and it was packed out. They even had one group of two boys ages 10 and 14 who created a chess app with very few rules. That just gives you a taste of how easy it now is to develop for BlackBerry compared to the previous school of hard knocks.
Please share your story with us if you made it to one of the BlackBerry 10 Jam events. We will hopefully be attending the one in NYC to get a feel for how it is going.

Переслать - Hexage Releases EVAC & Free Robotek Game for the PlayBook
Earlier this month Hexage committed to bringing their whole game library to the PlayBook. They started with two games, Radiant and Radiant Defense, and now they have brought two more. This time we have the free Robotek strategy game that is very engaging though it does not have a specific genre I can pin on it. EVAC on the other hand is an arcade style puzzle game that has you avoiding the enemies and completing the 32 levels as you set traps for your enemies.
Check out both in App World:
You can find video demos of both below:

Переслать - iOS Emulator for the PlayBook Demoed on Video (Brine)
When Todd first sent us this video yesterday (via BBin) I had my doubts about its authenticity but it looks like there may be something to it. In the videos the developer, Bubble Wrap, shows off some free iOS apps running on the BlackBerry PlayBook in an emulator of the iOS environment. It is an iOS player that he has been working on for awhile and running on Windows with an emulated ARM core that he simply ported to the PlayBook to remove the need to emulate the ARM core.
My buddy Shane from BBOS did some digging since he was also originally skeptical and also heard that this might be legit. We may never actually see this released one of the developers of Dingleberry confirmed that the developer behind Brine contacted him last year. Supposedly Bubble Wrap ported the missing libraries between the PlayBook and iOS to make the apps able to run on both platforms. Hell even Chris Wade, another dev from Dingleberry, is working on porting his iOS emulator iEmu to the PlayBook.
I am not sure what the probability is of this ever hitting public release but it is great to see the developer interest in the platform and the strength of the QNX platform. Check it out in the videos and let us know what you think!
