- Free Ninja Breakout BrickBreaker Clone for BlackBerry Smartphones
It has been awhile since I played BrickBreaker but I recently saw a friend of mine playing Ninja Breakout and it brought it all back. XIMAD released Ninja Breakout under the radar a bit back but the game is definitely worth pointing out. It takes the classic Arkanoid game which BrickBreaker hails from and throws in some new twists and Ninja themed gameplay. That means 40 new levels of your favorite BrickBreaker style gaming.
You can pick up the free ad supported Ninja Breakout in App World. You can pay to remove the ads if you wish.

Переслать - RIM Details Android In-App Billing API Support in PlayBook OS 2.1 & BlackBerry 10
Its interesting to see RIM supporting more and more Android functionality to make it more enticing for developers to port their apps to the PlayBook and eventually BlackBerry 10. The most notable API support added in the latest PlayBook OS 2.1.0 developer beta build is the ability to use the In App Billing API. This allows developers to sell digital goods inside their PlayBook Ported Android app using App World. There are some limitations and minimal code changes required but most are minimal compromises.

Переслать - Meebo Shutting Down Mobile Clients – Download Your Chat Logs
When I first heard about Google acquiring Meebo I was curious what they were going to do with Meebo's current products. It turns out that Google is shutting down many if not most of them including their mobile instant messaging clients (BlackBerry, Android, iOS). ShvartzBerry pointed out that the Meebo BlackBerry client will no longer work after July 11th, 2012. Also worth noting is that your chat logs from Meebo will only be available until July 11th, 2012 so if you want to download them I highly recommend doing it pronto.

Переслать - Former AT&T Exec Admits Leaking BlackBerry & iPhone Sales Stats to Traders
Ever felt like the stock market is rigged so that you never come ahead? The latest in the governments insider trading crackdown is a former AT&T sales executive, Alnoor Ebrahim, who admitted this week to leaking data on BlackBerry and iPhone sales for AT&T to traders. Ebrahim was part of an expert network who was paid to get insider secrets to traders as consultants. Reuters quotes Ebrahim saying:
"I provided insider information concerning AT&T’s sales of Apple’s iPhone and RIM’s (Research In Motion Ltd (RIM.TO)) Blackberry products, as well as other handset set devices sold through AT&T distribution channels," Ebrahim told U.S. District Judge Paul Oetken in Manhattan.

Переслать - Luhu Streams Hulu From Your PC to Your PlayBook
The idiotic user agent based restrictions put in place by Hulu are annoying and have led to some creative solutions. The most common involves using your PC to act as a go between Hulu and your device. While there are more expensive solutions using Splashtop, PlayOn, or others Daniel Bingham has created his own take. Luhu performs the same function by streaming videos onto your Windows Vista or Windows 7 PC and then transcoding it to your PlayBook. There are quite a few caveats such as needing a fast PC and no video controls but it is a start.
You can find Luhu in App World for $1.99. I highly recommend reading Daniels post on the limitations of Luhu on his website along with the video below that shows how it works:

Переслать - RIM Consolidates BlackBerrys Manufacturers Starting With Celestica
RIM mentioned during their last earnings call that they were making changes to their supply chain to lower cost along with other cost cutting measures. As further proof of that fact Celestica has announced that they will no longer be manufacturing BlackBerry products. They have been focused on making Curve and Bold models for North American in Mexico. According to Reuters that brings RIM's manufacturers to Flextronics International Ltd, Jabil Circuit Inc, and Quanta Computer Inc. The first two are expected to win the contract to take over from Calestica since Quanta just builds the PlayBook.
Wall Street seems to be spinning this as more bad news for RIM but mostly it is expected. RIM is starting a new with the BlackBerry 10 line and the lower sales figures for legacy BlackBerry devices will continue to go down as they are replaced by the new generation. I am just hoping this also means that RIM will have two, max three, lines of BlackBerry 10 devices instead of the multitude of form factors we currently have.

Переслать - Dave Balmer Joins RIM Developer Relations Team from WebOS
It is nice to see RIM's Developer Relations Team getting some great cross pollination from other platforms with the latest coming from WebOS. Dave Balmer previously worked as a developer evangelist for WebOS and HTML5 and is now bringing that expertise to RIM. What is most interesting is his reasoning for doing so and why he thinks RIM is picking up the torch WebOS dropped in terms of leadership in HTML development.
I highly recommend checking out his "Leaving WebOS but not the Web!" write up but most of all you should read his three reasons for why he thinks RIM will succeed where WebOS failed:
Monday is my first day at RIM. You know, the BlackBerry folks. Like Palm, RIM has received some negative press of late. Some layoffs and restructuring are looming, and some of the tech media are skeptical of RIM's future. While some of that sounds familiar, here are just a few important differences to me:
1. While webOS fell behind the market leaders in HTML5 support, RIM has pushed forward. In fact, the early BlackBerry 10 (BB10) browser looks to be top dog. Today, HTML5 Test gives it a whopping score of 447. This is a higher score than iOS 5 (324), higher still than Android 4 (273), and even slightly higher than the top desktop browser score (Chrome Canary with 442). Source:http://html5test.com/results/mobile.html
2. RIM gets that web developers can and should be equal citizens with native developers. For the past two years, they've been steadily moving towards complete system access parity between c/c++, Adobe Air, and Java (Android flavor). In other words, they support more tools for developers to make great apps than anyone else in the mobile space today.
3. As a user, BB10 itself is damn awesome. It has some of goodies I liked from webOS, iOS and even Win7; but all streamlined and more functional. Plus, there are even more unique features and slick interactions which help put it way over the top in my book…. and it's not even released yet. I haven't been this excited about a mobile platform in a long while, and judging from meeting a ton of other excited developers at a BlackBerry 10 Jam, I'm not the only one.

Переслать - Scrubly Cleans & Backs Up Your Gmail & Outlook Contacts
I have been going through the painful process of merging and cleaning up my contacts from Gmail, two Google Apps accounts, Outlook, and a few other sources. I have managed to get them all into Gmail but it has been a real pain to keep them in sync and merged and disseminated to my BlackBerry and PlayBook. Jason told me to check out Scrubly as a solution for removing duplicate contacts and merging contacts along with backing it up into a central location.
I am currently trying out their free plan for up to 250 contacts which seems to work nicely. They have two plans for those serious about cleaning up their contacts. For $19.99 you can do a one time clean up for an unlimited number of contacts. For $39.95/year you get unlimited contacts and unlimited scrubs per year.

Переслать - RIM Shares Some BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour Stats
The BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour has been making a whirlwind journey around the world. They are about to kick off this week in my hometown of NYC and based on previous events this should be another hit event. RIM was kind enough to send us over some details about the events with both Toronto and NYC starting this week at fully booked events with more than 250 developers at each.
They shared some solid stats about the whole roadshow along with quotes from some developers who attended the first events in the North America tour:
- 23 BlackBerry Jam Cities in 12 Weeks
- Over 5,000 Developer Attendees Anticipated Worldwide
- Over 5,000 BlackBerry Dev Alpha test devices seeded
- Over 300 apps to be presented as lightning pitches (whereby select registrants pitch their apps to fellow attendees. Attendees vote for a winner)
- Fully booked events in Paris, London, Jakarta, Barcelona, Berlin, Toronto, New York, Santa Clara and Bangalore
Here's what developers are saying coming out of the BlackBerry Jam events:
"With BlackBerry 10, RIM is providing developers with a wider selection of first-party tools than any other mobile platform available and is evolving them based on developers’ direct input. The result is that RIM is delivering high-quality tools which meet developers’ actual needs, enabling us to focus on what we do best instead of fighting with our tools."
- Matt Lewandowsky, developer, Greenviolet
"BlackBerry more than ever before is invested in developers. The tools are better than ever before, the support is there as well. I’m very excited for the future of BlackBerry."
- Arthur Phillips, Developer, GadgetNerdly
"I've seen without a doubt that RIM knows what they are doing and they are empowering their developers by providing all the right tools. It was encouraging seeing the BlackBerry team readily and openly answering questions of the crowd at a recent event and candidly making themselves available to developers. When a developer asked when to expect the BlackBerry 10 tools to be ready, the reply came, 'It will be ready when you tell us its ready.'"
- Mikel Calderon, teacher and new developer
"With BlackBerry 10 and its suite of developer tools, RIM enables a wide array of developers, ranging from web programmers to C/C++ hackers, to rapidly build fast, secure, and graphics-rich mobile apps. Impressive tool kit and an engaging user experience!"
- Vikram Davar, Principal at Tezlane Inc.

Переслать - Easily Change The Snooze Time From the BlackBerry Reminder Popup!
I have been looking for a solution for being able to easily change the snooze time for a reminder or alarm on my BlackBerry for years. Somehow Kevin @CrackBerry found about this easter egg hidden in the BlackBerry calendar that allows you to do just this. By entering in a certain code in the calendar options screen you will not have the ability to change the snooze time in 5 minute increments from 1 minute to 60 minutes by scrolling left or right. The best part is that it works in both the Alarm Clock and Calendar reminders.
To enable this awesome feature that should be enabled by default simply:
- Open the Calendar application
- Press the menu button and select options
- In the options type the letters acsz
NOTE: if "acsz" does not work then try "ALT+acsz" - As confirmation of it being enabled you should immediately see a popup stating "Now allowing user to change snooze from dialog"
If you ever want to disable this feature just perform the same process again. I am just shocked that RIM does not have this as a menu option even though it seems like it has been there since OS 5.0. I really hope RIM publicizes it more and enables it by default. This is one of those features that I cannot imagine anyone turning off… Kudos to Kevin for figuring it out.
PS: Anyone figure out what ACSZ stands for? I feel like we need to start typing in Konami style codes into all the native apps until we find more easter eggs…
