Переслать - Free Sadistic puZZed App Forces You to Solve Puzzles to Snooze Your Alarm
I have long been a fan of crazy alarm clocks. I even owned one once that shot puzzle pieces in the air and helped my brother get a sonic boom alarm clock. While some of you may have turned to more traditional alarm clocks that only shoot puzzle pieces in the air or shock you when you hit the snooze button qbotron has created puZZed to do even better with your BlackBerry. The puZZed app is an alarm clock that requires you to solve a puzzle before turning off the alart clock or snoozing it.
Keep in mind these puzzles are not easy and will essentially require you to wake up. Sadly they do not offer any warranty that your spouse will not kill you when your alarm continues to blare but it will solve your oversleeping problem… hopefully.
Check out puZZed free in App World. Thanks Jeff for pointing it out via CrackBerry.

Переслать - RIM Reaffirms Commitment to Consumer Market With Renewed Focus
The media stirred up quite a bit of confusion about RIM from statements made during RIM's Q4 earnings call. I was listening in to the call and it was clear that many of the reports of RIM abandoning the consumer market were misinterpretations. We told you what RIM really meant and now RIM has gone on record themselves to clarify the confusion.
Check out their comments below from their blog:
Coming out of yesterday's Q4 Fiscal 2012 Earnings Call, we've received comments and questions from our customers about RIM's commitment to the consumer market. To be really clear, we are fully committed to the consumer market. In fact, we are aggressively focusing on delivering a unique and compelling user experience to all of our customers to enhance the way people engage, produce content, and manage data via mobile computing.
The consumer market is vast, so rather than trying to be all things to all people, RIM will focus its talent base and homegrown software and services on specific areas of the consumer market where BlackBerry® excels — which includes delivering a great mobile social and productivity experience – and we will look to existing and new partnerships to provide additional compelling apps and services that customers want and love.
We understand that buying patterns are rapidly changing for both consumers and enterprise customers. Smartphones are now just as likely to be purchased by consumers and taken into work to be used as their go-to work phone, as they are to be supplied by employers and used by employees on the weekend. We feel we are uniquely positioned to deliver a smartphone that consumers will be excited to use both personally and professionally that will also satisfy their employer's needs for security and data management.
BlackBerry® 7 was a big step forward in this journey. BlackBerry® PlayBook™ OS 2.0 is another strong example of our commitment to delivering a powerful mobile computing experience. As part of the lead up to BlackBerry® 10, we will continue to seek partnerships with application and service providers to deliver consumer features and content that are central to the BlackBerry value proposition. We believe these partnerships, combined with our core product offerings, will provide an extremely attractive experience to both consumers and our enterprise customers.
We are excited about our renewed company focus and hope our partners and customers are excited as well.
If you have questions or comments, please share them with us. We promise to read them all and come back and answer as many as we can.

Переслать - RIM announces Partnership with Coleman Outdoors
Well this one was unexpected, but, makes perfect sense when you look at the big picture. RIM CEO Thorsten Heins strongly indicated that Blackberry would be seeking and attempting to enter into strategic partnerships in the future and this would seem to be the first. Coleman is an industry leading company that specializes in outdoor camping and hunting gear. RIM sees a unique and untapped market and plans on targeting it with customized smartphones aimed the camping/outdoor/hunting person. Mr. Hein’s commented “this is a market segment that has not been focused on by any of our competitors and we believe there is a strong need for phones specialized to address the needs of the the outdoors community.” William Coleman, president and CEO of Coleman, indicated that “we have been looking into entering the smartphone market for several years now and we feel that Blackberry offers us a unique value proposition that our fans and equipment users can take advantage of.”
The future phones will be based on the current OS 7.1 software and will offer customized phones and software additions aimed at the markets outlined above. These additions have been developed by Coleman with Blackberry.
The new Blackberry Coleman phones, modified 9850 seen above, will feature customized apps and hardware developed by Coleman including:
- GPS tracking of deer, moose, buffalo and other game
- Geo thermal location software developed by Coleman to track the migration of game
- Customized “Game Attraction System” using industry leading “Echo Hunting Game Sytems” voice calling
- 5 MP camera capable of night vision and heat tracking
- Coleman developed software that will determine height, weight and age of any game captured on camera
- Bluetooth tracking of ammo levels
- Rugged exterior that has been tested to survive falls from over 1000 feet
- Waterproof to 100 meters
- Capable of sustaining heat temperatures of 752F
- Patented Coleman multipurpose “thinset” knife that is retractable from the rear battery door
- Custom battery with 3 times the battery life of regular BB7 models
- Coleman patented “Buck Glass” that is two times the strength of Gorilla Glass II
The Blackberry Coleman phones will come in 3 styles that are modified versions of the Bold 9900, Torch 9850 and Torch 9810
Blackberry and Coleman have entered into agreements with leading Outdoors retailer, Bass Pro, to sell the new smartphones. The new Blackberry Coleman series will be available at most providers coming this summer and pricing will be announced in the next couple weeks

Переслать - RIM is NOT Abandoning The Consumer Market, Despite What You've Heard
All those Chicken Littles out there doing the Muppet Run in frantic circles about how RIM is “abandoning the consumer market” need to calm down and have some dip. That is NOT what was said, nor was it implied. Financial earnings calls are open to a lot of interpretation, and it seems like a lot of doom-seeking RIM bashers are leaping to two hugely-mistaken conclusions. Let’s address them, shall we?
Mistaken conclusion #1: RIM is abandoning the consumer market.
Simply not true. Thorsten stated that BlackBerry cannot succeed and be everything to all people. Their customer base still tends to prioritize security, efficiency, and productivity over more “mainstream” consumer needs like media consumption and entertainment, and it makes sense for RIM to refocus on winning back the ground they’ve lost in their strongest market. RIM makes their money primarily from their infrastructure and service offerings, not handset sales. The business world has become very media-centric and mobile-minded, people. The lines between the “traditional” BlackBerry business user’s needs and the “average” consumer’s needs has become quite narrow and blurred. They are much more closely-related now than they were even just 4 years ago.
That being said, RIM will also be focusing on bringing current feature-phone users into the smartphone age by releasing more entry-level BB7 devices in the coming months. This will expand the BlackBerry brand’s market presence and boost consumer brand awareness worldwide. Indonesia has been a key market for RIM the past few years, and RIM continues to perform well in that market. RIM’s goal is to get these new users to increase their tech savvy and become advanced users who want to upgrade to a top-tier device. (“PSSST. Hey. Kid. Want a BlackBerry? The first one’s free cuz I like ya….”) Hey – it worked on me. I started on an 8300, went to the 9700, and now I’m on the 9900. Flagship all the way, baby!
Heins admitted in his address that RIM was late to the “Bring Your Own Device” game, having depended on corporate IT departments to require the use of BlackBerries as their employees’ only option. They aim to regain ground in this area by making BB10 devices the devices people WANT to bring. The point that many panic-mongers are completely missing is that BYOD sits squarely astride the fence between the enterprise and individual consumer markets. People want to to carry a single device, be it for work or personal use. RIM wants BB10 to make people choose BlackBerry as their daily driver at work and at play. Service solutions like BlackBerry Balance make it an easier choice for both employees and IT departments to choose BlackBerry, and Mobile Fusion makes it easier for companies to support iOS and Android devices while still retaining their BES infrastructure (and keep paying RIM for the pleasure).
Heins also understands that RIM cannot do this alone; it needs help from major partners to offer the consumer and supplemental enterprise applications and services customers are clamoring for. *COUGH*COUGH*NETFLIX*SKYPE*COUGH* RIM is making a lot of progress getting developers to sign up, giving out BB10 development alpha devices and free PlayBooks to encourage participation. Over 6,000 new devs had signed on recently when Thorsten spoke at DevCon Asia, and RIM is going to focus on bringing more major partners on board with BB10.
How anyone gets “RIM is abandoning consumers” from this I can’t quite figure. People hear what they want to hear, I guess, and it seems like lots of people just want RIM to fail.
Mistaken conclusion #2: Thorsten Heins is considering selling RIM.
Thorsten Heins is in his tenth week as the new RIM CEO, and it is pretty clear that the “new office” smell has faded. Thor has ordered an extensive review of the company, and is not pleased with some of the things he’s found so far. Lack of accountability for poor performance, especially at the management level, grossly inefficient processes and behaviors, to name a few, have opened Thorsten’s eyes to the true scope of the vision quest he has embarked upon. “We are committed to turning the company around”, he stated, in direct response to the question of selling company. He went on to say that should the review process point towards that as the best option for the company, all options will be considered, “but that’s not the direction we’re going.”He hasn’t ruled it out completely, but neither has he posted a “For Sale” sign on the lawn. Heins admitted that the company “was on the road to fragmentation”. He understands that RIM has a lot of work to do before they get to that point, and they’re going to give it everything they’ve got.
“We will leave no stone unturned and make the best decision for RIM and stakeholders.” Watch your back, people; Thor’s cleaning house. Expect the bad elements in RIM’s workforce and processes to be scurrying away like roaches when the lights come on.
So, for the nonce, RIM is not for sale. It’s a “charming little fixer-upper” in dire need of some TLC from TH.

Its nice to see some decent Android ports coming to PlayBook OS 2.0. The latest brought to my attention is All In One Remote by Hisham Hassan Bakr. He ported the media controlling app that works for Windows, Mac, and even Linux to the PlayBook and works over Wi-Fi and supposedly Bluetooth too. It offers you a touchscreen mouse to control your PC and keyboard along with things like a gamepad and other perks. It is not the most refined app and it is a port but it is also free which is a nice break!

Well the earnings call just ended and I have to say that Mr. Heins seems very very focused and knows what he wants. What does Mr. Heins want? Partnerships. Over half Q&A was talking about Partnerships. It seems very very likely that we will be seeing BB10 on superphones made by another manufacturer…. like Samsung.
Here are some highlights:
- Will not give up control of hardware; however, that doesn’t mean they need to make it themselves, it could mean they give another company spec benchmarks and that company makes the phone
- Heins seems very in favour of partnerships to push BB10
- RIM will not be sold, its not on the table (para phrased)
- Stronger investment in enterprise
- They want Blackberry to be the next Apple basically, they want people to lust for a Blackberry
- Heins impression of RIM at day 2 of being CEO is very different than his position 10 weeks in today, partnerships focus is evidence of that change
- Heins says he has a clear focus on the next 1-2 years of rim
- Heins feels that with BB10 RIM can grown into new consumer markets (CARS!!!)
Overall Heins said all the write things and then some. RIM is going to be a very lean, mean fighting machine and he wants to make it more enjoyable to work at RIM (Ice Cream Lunches?)
He noted in his opening speech that the structure of the company is changing to allow, among other things, the talented people in the company to bring out positive change themselves and to foster innovative ideas within the company.
In the end though, it all comes down to execution and I for one have faith in Thor
*** Upon further thought, I wanted to ad that these Partnerships that Mr. Heins is looking for, could also take the form of software partnerships ala Amazon taking over the Music/Movie stores *****

Переслать - Over 1 Million BlackBerry PlayBook Users – BlackBerry 10 Carrier Acceptance Starts in Summer
Thorsten Heins confirmed on the call today that there are now over 1 million BlackBerry PlayBook owners out there. RIM says they have shipped another half a million PlayBooks in the last quarter. That sets the record straight on that for now. It is also pretty impressive if you think about that compared to how many app sales the PlayBook drives.
Another interesting update by Thorsten is that BlackBerry 10 devices are still scheduled for later this year. On top of that the BlackBerry 10 devices are scheduled to go the carrier acceptance this summer. Thorsten also said that he has seen the latest BlackBerry 10 builds and he was very impressed with what the engineers have done since he started.

Переслать - Former Co-CEO Jim Balsillie Resigns & CTO David Yach Retiring
It looks like RIM's is shaking up upper management. Former Co-CEO Jim Balsillie has left RIM's board. Also David Yach is retiring as CTO after 13 years. Jim Rowan, COO of Global Operations at RIM, has decided to pursue other interests and RIM is searching to hire a single COO to replace both Thorsten and Jim Rowan.
Thorsten is talking now about how RIM is working on reducing complexity in the organization. (Finally!) They are also adding an increased focus on accountability that crippled certain organizations from innovating. (Hopefully RIM legal gets the message) Finally RIM is planning on letting the employees drive growth. RIM is also interviewing many possible CMOs for managing their marketing efforts with a decision hopefully coming shortly.
Also of interest is Thorsten mentioned that Dan Dodge, CEO of QNX, is driving BlackBerry 10 development and growth in the company. I wonder if Thorsten will make him the CTO.
Developing…

Revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2012 was $4.2 billion, down 19% from $5.2 billion in the previous quarter and down 25% from $5.6 billion in the same quarter of fiscal 2011. The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 68% for hardware, 27% for service and 5% for software and other revenue. During the quarter, RIM shipped approximately 11.1 million BlackBerry smartphones and over 500,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets.
“I have assessed many aspects of RIM’s business during my first 10 weeks as CEO. I have confirmed that the Company has substantial strengths that can be further leveraged to improve our financial performance, including RIM’s global network infrastructure, a strong enterprise offering and a large and growing base of more than 77 million subscribers. I’m very excited about the prospects for the BlackBerry 10 platform, which is on track for the latter part of calendar 2012. Notwithstanding these strengths and opportunities, the business challenges we face over the next several quarters are significant and I am taking the necessary steps to address them,” said Thorsten Heins, President & CEO of Research In Motion. “In addition to delivering the BlackBerry 10 platform and refocusing resources on RIM’s key opportunities, such as BlackBerry Mobile Fusion and new integrated service offerings, we will also drive greater operational performance through a variety of initiatives including increased management accountability and process discipline. In parallel, we are undertaking a comprehensive review of strategic opportunities including partnerships and joint ventures, licensing, and other ways to leverage RIM’s assets and maximize value for our stakeholders.”
The Company’s GAAP net loss for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2012 was $125 million, or $0.24 per share diluted, compared with GAAP net income of $265 million, or $0.51 per share diluted, in the prior quarter and GAAP net income of $934 million, or $1.78 per share diluted, in the same quarter of fiscal 2011. Adjusted net income for the fourth quarter was $418 million, or $0.80 per share diluted. Adjusted net income and adjusted diluted earnings per share for the fourth quarter exclude the impact of pre-tax charges of $355 million which are predominantly non-cash ($346 million after tax) for the impairment of goodwill and $267 million ($197 million after-tax) for an inventory provision taken primarily on certain BlackBerry7 products. These charges and their related impacts on GAAP net income and diluted earnings per share are summarized in the tables below.

Investors should consider these non-GAAP measures in the context of RIM’s GAAP results.
(1) During fiscal 2012, the Company reported GAAP gross margin of $6.6 billion, or 35.7% of revenue. Excluding the impact of charges related to the PlayBook Inventory Provision, the Cost Optimization Program, the Q3 Service Interruption and the Inventory Provision, the adjusted gross margin was $7.4 billion, or 40.0% of revenue.

(5) Subsequent to fiscal 2012, the Company performed a goodwill impairment test and based on the results of that test, the Company recorded a non-cash pre-tax goodwill impairment charge of approximately $355 million, approximately $346 after tax.
(6) In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2012, the Company recorded a pre-tax provision of approximately $267 million, $197 million after tax, which was mostly non-cash, primarily related to its inventory valuation of certain BlackBerry 7 products.Change to Guidance Practices and Outlook:
The company expects continued pressure on revenue and earnings throughout fiscal 2013. Due to a desire to focus on long term value creation and the current business environment, RIM will no longer provide specific quantitative guidance. Some of the factors contributing to this include, ongoing weakness in the Company’s U.S. smartphone business, an increased focus on selling BlackBerry 7 smartphones to grow the subscriber base in advance of the BlackBerry 10 launch, increasing competitive pressure in the Company’s international markets and the introduction of certain new lower tier service pricing initiatives and a higher mix of sales coming from entry level products.
Organizational and Board of Directors Update:
Jim Balsillie, former Co-CEO of the Company, has resigned as a Director on the Company’s Board.
“As I complete my retirement from RIM, I’m grateful for this remarkable experience and for the opportunity to have worked with outstanding professionals who helped turn a Canadian idea into a global success,” said Jim Balsillie.
“On behalf of the Board and everyone at RIM, I would like to thank Jim for his 20 years of service to RIM,” said Barb Stymiest, Chair of RIM’s Board of Directors. “His energy, drive and enthusiasm helped build one of the most successful technology companies of our time.”
In addition, David Yach will be retiring from his role as CTO, Software after 13 years with the Company and after 4 years with the company and following an open dialogue on the future of global operations, Jim Rowan, COO, Global Operations, has decided to pursue other interests. The Company is currently undertaking a search to hire a single COO with responsibilities to run the Company’s operations.
“RIM would like to thank David Yach and Jim Rowan for their years of service and many contributions to RIM,” said Thorsten Heins, President and CEO. “We wish them well in their future pursuits.”

Переслать - RIM continues to shed excess weight – Reports indicate High level execs given the axe
News has already started to trickle out and its looking like RIM is about to shake things up. News out of the Globe and Mail suggests that many VP’s and SVP’s have been given pink slips today. Globe and Mail suggest the cuts are focused on Sales and Marketing which is very very interesting news as this is clearly one of RIM’s weak points.
