- New Curve 9220 commercial shows a new advertising style
To go along with the launch of the new Curve 9220 in India, RIM released a new commercial to focus on the new device in India. In my opinion the style of this ad is much different than the Be Bold campaign and gets right to the point of the device which is messaging.
Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link
As you can see the ad is right to the point, hits a target demographic and focuses 100% on messaging. It ends with 4 focus points of OS 7.1, Social Apps, FM Radio and BBM.
Its this straight to the point advertising that RIM needs to stick to. No glowing bikes or DJ’s or fruit vendors.
This is what our device does well.. boom. Buy it

Переслать - BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Celebrates its First Birthday!
It is hard to believe it has been a year since RIM launched the BlackBerry PlayBook right before BlackBerry World. Now a year later we know that a refresh is soon upon us with improvements like a 1.5Ghz processor and LTE. Still the PlayBook has come a far way and is really laying the groundwork for BlackBerry 10. I am really enjoying the improvements RIM has made in PlayBook OS 2.0 but what I am really waiting for is when RIM brings it all together with BlackBerry 10. We will start seeing this shortly with Cascades and other developments until we get the features and APIs necessary for SuperApps.
Congrats to the RIM team and we hope the PlayBook's second birthday will be when it truly shines!
PS: Thanks to everyone who reminded us about the launch day. That picture above is actually from the PlayBook launch party.

Переслать - Free Wikipedia PlayBook App Now in App World
We told you before that one of RIM's employees, @gordtanner, that came from their TinyHippos acquisition was working on a Wikipedia app. Specifically he was porting their HTML5 open source app to work on the PlayBook through PhoneGap. Now that app is officially in App World directly from the Wikimedia Foundation and is totally free.
The font size is a bit small for my taste but definitely makes browsing Wikipedia much easier.Update: You can change the font size in the settings to be easier to read.Check out Wikipedia for the PlayBook free in App World

Переслать - Kayak.com Releases PlayBook Travel Search App (Android Port)
It seems like RIM is using the Android player in PlayBook OS 2.0 to bring some companies to the BlackBerry 10 platform. Kayak stopped developing their BlackBerry smartphone app but now @AlexKinsella at RIM pointed out that Kayak has ported their Android app to the PlayBook. The app is definitely not a native app but this is all part of RIM's onboarding strategy for developers and apps on BlackBerry 10. I personally feel like all of these content portal apps will be HTML5 shortly so bringing them natively to the PlayBook will be even easier then.

Переслать - RIM Asks Attendies to Vote for BlackBerry 10 Jam "Unconference" Topics
RIM made a appeal to developers a bit back asking them to suggest topics for their first "unconference" at BlackBerry 10 Jam in May. Now they have compiled the most requested topics and set them up into a poll that you can use to vote for your favorite topic. There are 8 available topics and 5 of them will be covered so cast your votes!
Personally I am voting for "All things Cascades, bring your questions." Cast your own vote here on Twtpoll

Переслать - Get a Quick Laugh With the Free Moron Finder App
I feel bad mentioning this one since I am usually all about productivity on my BlackBerry but this one had me rolling. The Moron Finder by SRID Games is true to its name with its unscientific Moron Radar and Moron Meter. I am not sure how much I need to stress that this app cannot actually identify morons but you can definitely make it more effective by pointing it in the right direction. Just make sure your boss does not see you doing it…

Переслать - PlayBook OS Takes Current & Development Tablet Browser Crown at HTML5Test.com
We have told you quite a few times that RIM is really pushing for making the PlayBook browser a desktop class Browser. Bill pointed out to us that HTML5Test.com now has both the PlayBook OS 2.0 and OS 2.1 taking the top spots for tablet browsers in both the current and beta/development categories. It has a heavy lead in both categories. RIM is now working on improving the ancilliary features of the browser so hopefully it keeps on getting better!
Check out the stats here. Its also interesting to note that RIM is making some great headway in pushing their WebKit port back upstream so that development is even faster.

Переслать - RIM Splitting Off Beta Zone for Business Into New Sub-Site
I am not sure what the main purpose of this split is but RIM claims it is necessary. RIM sent out an email to many beta zone participants saying that they are creating a new sub-site called BlackBerry Beta Zone for Business specifically for business software and services. These programs were already in the regular all encompassing beta zone but RIM seems to want to focus them.
The two sites will soon be:
- BlackBerry Beta Zone – Business: www.blackberry.com/businessbeta
- BlackBerry Beta Zone – Consumer: www.blackberry.com/beta
Here is the email RIM sent out:
BlackBerry Beta Zone has grown significantly since its launch nearly three years ago and we are pleased to inform you that it will be evolving soon to better suit both consumers and business members who participate regularly in BlackBerry beta programs. BlackBerry Beta Zone will soon have a brand new sub-site, BlackBerry Beta Zone for Business, focusing on beta programs for business software and services. BlackBerry Beta Zone for Business will offer:
- Business specific beta programs and content
- An improved mobile browsing experience
- Updated community features
The update is expected to occur in the coming weeks and requires no action on your part. While logged into BlackBerry Beta Zone for Business, you will be able to access all your business beta programs on behalf of your organization. Your existing BlackBerry Beta Zone account remains valid for consumer beta programs as well.
After the update, the URLs for BlackBerry Beta Zone will be as follows:
- BlackBerry Beta Zone – Business: www.blackberry.com/businessbeta
- BlackBerry Beta Zone – Consumer: www.blackberry.com/beta
Once logged in to either site, switching between business and consumer is simple, seamless, and will not require another login.
We are very excited for the changes coming to BlackBerry Beta Zone and we look forward to your continued participation in BlackBerry beta programs.
Should you have any questions, please reply or contact us at enterprisebeta@rim.com.
Best regards,
BlackBerry Beta Programs

Переслать - BlackBerry Curve 9220 Now Official for India Launching April 19th
I think this is the first time RIM has released a phone specifically for India but it seems like the Curve 9220 is exactly that. RIM calls it the easy to use and easy to own BlackBerry Smartphone for India. It is packing OS 7.1 along with its new dedicated BBM key. This is also the first BlackBerry to ship with a built in FM Radio which is being touted as a way to listen to the radio without a data plan or services. It offers up 7 hours of talk time and up to 28 hours of music playback or FM radio listening.
RIM is also throwing in some goodies in the form of free applications for the BlackBerry Curve 9220:
As part of the launch in India, BlackBerry Curve 9220 customers can download a selection of apps from BlackBerry App World worth 2500 Rupees, for free(i). The offer is valid until June 30, 2012 and includes a wide range of apps that will roll out in a phased manner, including utilities, games and other apps. Pencil Camera, Photo Studio Pro, Horoscope Oracle – Follow Your Lucky Stars, Drive Safely Pro and Ultimate Cricket are just a few of the popular apps that will be available through this promotional offer.
The BlackBerry Curve 9220 is set to launch April 19th at authorized retailers and distributors across India. Other markets are expected to get it "in the coming weeks." More info can be found at: in.blackberry.com/Curve

Переслать - BlackBerry Mobile Voice System 5.1 SP1 MR1 Released With Siemens OpenScape Voice Support
RIM has released another update for their BlackBerry Mobile Voice System (MVS) to v5.1 Service Pack 1 Maintenance Release 1. This new update "includes a subset of the fixes to enhance the MVS experience as well as support for Siemens Enterprise Communications customers." Check out the details at www.blackberry.com/mvs.
RIM announces BlackBerry Mobile Voice System Support for OpenScape Voice from Siemens Enterprise Communications
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM–(Marketwire – April 17, 2012) – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced that BlackBerry(R) Mobile Voice System (MVS) 5.1 now supports OpenScape Voice V6 from Siemens Enterprise Communications. The solution allows customers to access desk phone functionality on their BlackBerry(R) smartphone.
BlackBerry MVS, together with OpenScape Voice, can be used to provide a comprehensive Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) solution for BlackBerry smartphone users. Siemens Enterprise Communications customers will now be able to place and receive desk phone calls on their BlackBerry smartphones and enjoy the convenience of single number reach, extension dialing and phone features such as hold, transfer and ad-hoc conferencing.
For connection with OpenScape Voice, customers can use AudioCodes Mediant Gateway, which will allow BlackBerry MVS to be used with mobile as well as Wi-Fi(R) networks, such as the Enterasys Wireless solution from Enterasys Networks, a Siemens Enterprise Communications company. With BlackBerry MVS, calls are routed through the company’s phone system, and administrators can set IT policies and controls to take advantage of least-cost routing and save on long-distance and international roaming charges. Call routing through the corporate phone system can also help with adherence to company policies and regulatory compliance requirements.
Alan Panezic, VP, Enterprise Product Management & Marketing at RIM, said, "Mobile and flexible working is now commonplace around the world and BlackBerry MVS gives companies the means to further leverage their corporate phone system and better support employees while they are away from their desks. Giving users a wireless extension of the corporate phone system via their BlackBerry smartphones can improve workforce productivity, save costs on long-distance and international roaming charges and reduce employee cell minute usage by allowing Wi-Fi-based phone calls from work, public hotspots and at home."
Rick Puskar, Senior Vice President, Global Portfolio Management at Siemens Enterprise Communications, said, "Siemens Enterprise Communications is pleased to add BlackBerry MVS support to our rich OpenScape UC portfolio. Mobility continues to be an area of innovation for us, and BlackBerry MVS will help our joint customers increase their mobile productivity and simultaneously drive overall cost-efficiencies. This solution provides a simplified communications experience which ultimately benefits both IT departments and their end-users."
In addition to support for Siemens Enterprise Communications, BlackBerry MVS supports corporate phone systems from Mitel, Avaya, Nortel and Cisco. For more information about BlackBerry MVS, please visit www.blackberry.com/mvs.If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
