- Bloom Defender Tower Defense Game for the PlayBook
I truly enjoy playing tower defense style games which is why I had to try Bloom Defender. The game is quite entertaining on my PlayBook where you try to setup a defense of trees to protect the mother tree from elemental spirits. There are 36 levels to bust through and multiple different baddies and spells your protective trees can cast. It does not seem to have the performance of a native game but that does not seem to really hamper the gameplay.

Переслать - AMC Releases Very Simple Mad Men Job Interview App for PlayBook
Its nice to see AMC releasing apps for the PlayBook at the same time as their Android and Kindle counterparts but it does make me wish they would try harder. Donny from RIM pointed out that AMC has posted up their Mad Men Job Interview app for the PlayBook along with other devices. The interview is really just 7 questions and based on your answer they tell you what role you would have in the show. You don't even need the app to take the quiz since it is available in Flash on their website. Here is how AMC describes the cross platform launch on their blog:
With new copywriter Michael Ginsberg and Don’s new secretary Dawn joining the SCDP staff, it seems Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce is hiring once again. Want to apply for a (virtual) job yourself? You can now do so now for free via Mad Men‘s Job Interview app on your smartphone or tablet.
You’ll be interviewed by everyone from Peggy to Lane to Don as your future bosses look to learn whether you’ve got what it takes to be the next copywriter, the next graphic artist or even the next senior partner. Download the FREE App now on your Android, Kindle Fire or Blackberry PlayBook.
Check out the Mad Men Job Interview app free in App World. Now I just need Hulu on the PlayBook to stream it!

Переслать - Remote Spark Ports VNC & Remote Desktop RDP Apps to PlayBook (Android)
Do you remember how hard it was to find an RDP (Remote Desktop) or VNC client when the PlayBook first came out? Now there are multiple options in App World with the latest coming from Remote Spark. Personally I hope they realize the demand and develop native versions of the apps.

Переслать - PlayStation Emulator Ported to the PlayBook (PCSX-ReARMed-PB)
I have to give a big shout out to Catalystg for releasing a Playstation emulator for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The PCSX-ReARMed-PB lets you play (legal!) Playstation v1 games on your PlayBook. There are a few incompatibilities that users are running into but Catalystg has a great thread going on CrackBerry forums about the release. They actually used RIM's TouchControlOverlay port to create the controls interface for the emulator.
Check out all the instructions here (not for the faint of heart) and you can download the emulator zipped from GitHub. Credit also goes to Notaz for providing the original emulator and assisting with the port and Jtokarchuk for his assistance. Kudos to UrbanGlowCam for the screenshot.

Переслать - Have a Cute Monkey Mimic You With Talking Monkey
The team at MMMOOO has decided to take on the cute animal meme with Talking Monkey. It reminds me of the Talking Tom app that took a life of its own on iOS. Now Talking monkey lets you have him repeat anything you say from his 3D animated monkey body. You need to download the animations once you pick up the app and will make you laugh if you enjoy cute things. Just hit the microphone button on the bottom right and then press again when you are done to have him mimic you.

Переслать - BlackBerry Beta Zone Redesigned & New Business Beta Zone Launches
RIM has been gathering feedback for awhile now on how to improve the BlackBerry Beta Zone and they have now executed. They have redesigned it along with improving things like the mobile experience and a more user friendly interface. They have also launched the new clearly separated Business Beta section of the Beta Zone which they explain here. It thankfully uses the same credentials but separates the two.
The new Beta Zone improvements include:
- A more user friendly interface – We've redesigned the site from top to bottom. It's more engaging to use, has more interactive elements, and offers a more intuitive user experience to make sure you can find what you're looking for quickly and easily.
- A clearer division between Business and Consumer beta programs – We've also now separated BlackBerry Beta Zone into two distinct sites: BlackBerry Beta Zone and BlackBerry Beta Zone for Business. BlackBerry Beta Zone for Business now has its own dedicated URL so users can more easily access enterprise programs, while consumers only see content and programs that are of interest to them.
- More opportunities to get involved – We know BlackBerry Beta Zone members have a lot to say, so we've added a blog-style newsfeed to provide the latest site news and allow you to comment and share in the conversation. We'll also be posting more frequent polls and surveys, ensuring that there are more opportunities than ever to get your feedback.
- Improved mobile experience – BlackBerry beta testers are always on the move, so we've optimized our mobile site to make it easier to provide your feedback on the go. We've revised the mobile layout, simplified the download process, and added access to a number of new features – all to improve your mobile beta testing experience.
Check out the new design at www.blackberry.com/beta!

Переслать - iMazing Adds SMS & Color Label Support to its Notification System
Matthias Marquart has pushed the envelope a bit further with iMazing this week. We mentioned iMazing when it launched as a utility that let you easily handle incoming messages by simply swiping. I love the app because some of its features were developed when I asked for them so I am a bit biased. Now Matthias has also added in basic SMS support to iMazing. The issue with SMS support is that due to BlackBerry API limitations it is not possible for developers to delete, mark as save, or mark as read a SMS message. For now you can read and dismiss them.
Also added in the latest iMazing v1.4.2.2 from the change log:
- Added additional customizable actions for swipe left, swipe right and double tap:
- Reply
- Forward
- SMS-Support (OFF by default – need to be enabled in the Options)
Unfortunately cause of API-limitations there is no support for some core functionality of iMazing for SMS Messages – for example DELETE, ‘MARK as SAVE‘ or ‘MARK AS READ‘ can’t be supported cause of the restrictions of the APIs available to 3′rd party developers.
So please don’t expect too much from the SMS-Integration of iMazing there are not much available options and functions. - Configure for each of your eMail accounts an additional color code that will be displayed in front of the message in the popup list – you can select from ten different color squares: none, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, White, Aqua, Violet or Pink
- Added new Option ‘No Popup in Clock/Bedside Mode’
Enabling this option will disable the iMazing popup while the clock is active. Use this option when you do not like to see any incoming messages while in bedside mode. - Added new Option ‘Turn LED off on Close’
Select if iMazing should automatically turn off the LED when the popup list window will be closed. - Switched default actions for Swipe-Right and Double-tap (just effecting new users)
What’s Fixed
- ‘Enable Backlight on new eMail’ should not unlock your device any longer.
Pick up the latest version of iMazing in App World. It has a free trial that shows you one message at a time and you can upgrade to the full version through in app purchase.

Переслать - Google Drive Already Works With Files & Folders on the PlayBook
Many of you may have heard that Google launched their new cloud storage solution Google Drive today with 5GB free for all users. The Innovatology crew let us know on Twitter that they tested their Files & Folders PlayBook file manager app with the new service and preliminary testing shows that it works like a charm. It seems like Google has simply extended the Google Docs standard and API to also encompass the larger Google Drive.

Переслать - Free Tomb Escape Mimics Temple Run Gameplay on BlackBerry 7 Devices!
You may have noticed iOS users addicted to the game Temple Run recently. SolverLabs has decided to capitalize on that success by releasing a very similar 3D game called Tomb Escape that runs on some BlackBerry 7 devices. My guess is it needs the latest BlackBerry 7 devices for the 3D graphics and tilting game action but who knows. The game is totally free and runs nicely on my 9900. It is also compatible with the Bold 9930, Porsche P’9981, and Torch 9810. I am not sure why the 9850/9860 is not getting some love but hopefully it will soon.

I am still trying to wrap my head around why you would want this but based on two friends recommending it I decided to mention it. Переслать - Devs: RIM Releases Gameplay 3D Opensource Cross Platform C++ Game Framework
RIM's Gaming division is really putting on the full court press when it comes to attracting game developers. Now Sean Paul Taylor, Team Lead for Gaming R&D at RIM, announced that they have released their new v1.2 of their open source cross platform C++ game development framework Gameplay. I am not sure if this development is coming to RIM via an acquisition but its pretty cool that RIM is pushing their own totally opensource 3D gaming framework. I thought at first that it might have come from RIM's Scoreloop acquisition but this version does not have Scoreloop integration yet… Check out a demo of one of their games in development made using Gameplay:
Either way Sean let all devs know that together with Steve Grenier he is trying to make sure gaming on BlackBerry 10 is at the top of the game. His team has been porting all of the leading open source technologies to BlackBerry 10 and this is just one more prong in that effort. According to him:
The gameplay project is a contribution that is directly targeting the indie game developer ecosystem. We realize developers want to easily target as many platforms as they can to monetize and we want to help you do this… If you are familiar with other popular open-source 2D game engines like cocos2d-x and now want a high-quality 3D solution, then gameplay might be exactly what you are looking for!
Current features in gameplay
- Written completely in C++ and well documented using doxygen.
- Solution and workspaces for Visual Studio 2010, XCode 3.2.1 and Momentics IDE's.
- Platform-Game abstraction layer separating all operating system code from game engine code.
- Input system support for Mouse, Keyboard and Touch.
- Full vector math library with classes for Vector2/3/4, Matrix, Quaternion, Ray, Plane. Also Frustum and BoundingBox/BoundingSphere classes for object culling.
- Solid OpenGL 3.2+ (for Desktop) and OpenGL ES 2.0 (for Mobile) based rendering system with classes for RenderState, FrameBuffer, Mesh, Material, Effect, Pass and Techniques.
- Easy-to-use and efficient Font and Sprite classes.
- Scene-graph components such as Scene, Node, Light, Camera and Model.
- Binary encoding tool for creating optimized bundles for loading TTF fonts and 3D game assets supporting both COLLADA and FBX formats.
- Extensible animation system with classes for Animation, AnimationClip and Curve with built-in AnimationTarget's on Transform and MaterialParameter's classes.
- Complete 3D audio system with additional support for compressed audio using OGG and supporting HDMI gaming.
New features in gameplay v1.2
- Newplatforms now supporting:
- BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0 and BlackBerry 10 ready!
- Apple iOS 5.1 for iPhone and iPad
- Google Android 2.3+
- Microsoft Windows 7

Переслать - Words in Bed PlayBook Game Offers Both Online & Offline Play
Jimmy let us know about his first PlayBook game Words in Bed and I have to say I am impressed. I downloaded it on a friends PlayBook who is a word game nut and he loved it. The game has letters falling down and you have to keep on making words out of the available letters before they fill the screen. There are also four other variants of the game that offer different gameplay including:
- Original mode: With letters constantly falling from the sky, it’s your job to make words fast enough to stop them from filling the screen. This is a fast paced mode that will demand the most of your word finding skills. Create long words to earn coins which you can spend on powerups which will either find a word for you or clear a portion of the game board.
- Word search mode: A word is shown to you and it’s your job to find the letters on the board. This is a fast paced mode that will help expand your vocabulary.
- Kids mode: Words are chosen from limited subset of child appropriate words for you to find. This mode has no end, so take your time, learn new words and practice spelling(or letter recognition for the really little ones).
- Online multiplayer mode: Take on the world in a mode that gives everyone the same puzzle to solve at the same time. Your goal is to get the most points you can using 36 letters to form words within the time limit. A new game starts every 5 minutes. Challenge your friends on global leaderboards.
- Puzzle mode: Over 40 hand-crafted puzzles to solve, each containing one or more words that follow a certain theme. Will you find the perfect words to maximize your points or just enough to clear the board?
The online mode is quite fun since it is real time and you have less than 5 minutes to complete the board to get ranked. This is because both players get the same exact letters so they see who gets the highest score. The PlayBook is the first version out but he will also be rolling out iOS and Android clients for multiplayer games. Check out Words in Bed for $1.99 in App World.
PS: I have asked the developer to release some form of limited free trial so hopefully we will get one.
