They are a leading company in the food and beverage industry in Venezuela for what it is worth. If Fairfax is taking BlackBerry private to focus on enterprise this is the kind of company they want on their roster. Check out the details below:

Empresas POLAR S.A. Upgrades to BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10

CARACAS, VENEZUELA–(Marketwired – Sept. 23, 2013) – BlackBerry(R) (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSX:BB) today announced that Empresas POLAR S.A. ("POLAR"), a leading company in the food and beverage industry in Venezuela, is upgrading to the latest version of BlackBerry’s Enterprise Mobility Management solution (EMM), BlackBerry(R) Enterprise Service 10 (version10.1), to improve mobile productivity across the business. In addition, POLAR’s decision to use BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 is based on the flexibility and security that the solution provides for managing BlackBerry smartphones and other platforms.

For Empresas POLAR, BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 streamlines communications and collaboration by enabling employees to be more productive on the go and enabling business decision makers to access information quickly. In addition, the company can deploy key applications to help increase productivity while maintaining the high level of security they need.

"The demand for real-time mobility is revolutionizing business communications. We have a highly dynamic workforce, and need mobile devices that can adapt to the way our employees work and provide them with tools that support remote collaboration," said Alejandro Yabrudy, Personal Computing Manager, Systems Management, Empresas POLAR.

"The fact that we can efficiently and securely manage our all mobile devices with such a robust solution as BlackBerry Enterprise Service, which gives us the flexibility to manage multiple smartphone platforms, has been one of the main reasons why we chose to adopt the BlackBerry solution," explained Yabrudy.

"BlackBerry is excited to announce that Empresas POLAR has chosen BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 to manage its mobile fleet, giving employees secure mobile access to the information and resources that can improve productivity," said Marco Osio, Enterprise Sales Director for Venezuela at BlackBerry. "With BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 customers can get the industry’s most secure mobile enterprise solution, with multiplatform support and a single convenient console that makes managing complex mobile environments very easy."

BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 represents a consolidation of BlackBerry’s Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) product portfolio, which includes Mobile Device Management (MDM), security, infrastructure and app management, all conveniently accessible from a single console. Following a simple installation process, customers can upgrade from BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5 to the new EMM solution with no firewall changes.

  • BlackBerry Touts UK Enterprises Using BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10

    BES

Since Fairfax financial is buying into BlackBerry for what looks like their enterprise business its interesting to see a slew of press releases about it today. The latest is some stats for how UK enterprises are taking up or testing BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. Obviously there is a big difference between testing and actually deploying but hopefully BlackBerry can capitalize on the opportunity. Check out the details below:

UK Enterprises Embrace BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10

    - More than 25,000 BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 commercial and test servers have been installed globally

    - More than one-third (34) of FTSE 100 companies have installed BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 for either commercial or test purposes

    - Major carriers EE, Vodafone and O2 are all now supporting BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM–(Marketwired – Sept. 24, 2013) – From the FTSE 100 to football’s Premier League and many other organisations, BlackBerry(R) Enterprise Service 10 is being embraced by enterprises across the UK.

BlackBerry(R) (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSX:BB) today announced that 34 of the FTSE 100 companies have already installed BlackBerry(R) Enterprise Service 10, BlackBerry’s enterprise mobility management (EMM) solution, for either commercial or test purposes. Reflecting the clear need for companies to have a cross platform EMMsolution that delivers a strong level of security, control and management at the device and app level, the uptake amongst the UK’s largest companies follows the response in North America, where the majority of Fortune 500 companies have BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10.

In addition, with major UK carriers Vodafone, EE and O2 now supporting BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, many organisations across both the public and private sector are also making the move to the new BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 EMM solution:

-- Rocco Forte, a luxury hotel group, is using Secure Work Space for iOS(R) and Android(TM) to manage 60 tablets deployed to enable employees to access business-critical apps and information on-the-go. In addition, the company has deployed 200 new BlackBerry(R) 10 smartphones. With BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 and Secure Work Space, the company is now able to simply and securely manage all devices in the organisation. -- Clyde & Co., a global law firm with over 1,400 employees, has deployed BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 and plans to migrate its existing 1,200 BlackBerry smartphone users to BlackBerry 10 smartphones. -- The Premier League, the organizing body for the Barclays Premier League, is using BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 to manage its existing portfolio of BlackBerry smartphones, as well as a number of iOS devices. An additional 60 BlackBerry Q10 smartphones are also being rolled out across the organisation. -- Hogg Robinson, an international corporate services provider specialising in travel, expense and data management has deployed BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 to manage its existing suite of 800 BlackBerry smartphones, which now also includes newly deployed BlackBerry(R) Z10 and BlackBerry(R) Q10 smartphones. -- Public sector body NHS Education Scotland, a health board responsible for developing and delivering education and training to NHS Scotland employees, has deployed BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 and begun the rollout of 200 BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

In the May 2013 Forrester Research, Inc. report entitled: "Build A Road Map For Workforce Computing", Christian Kane wrote about the ever-growing need for an EMM platform in a mixed device environment. "To support the increasing diversity of mobile devices and platforms, Infrastructure & Operations pros are investing heavily in management solutions to monitor and secure devices across a broad ecosystem of operating systems and form factors. These solutions allow IT to proactively support multiple platforms and device types, extend management and security policies to both corporate-liable and employee-owned devices, and automate service desk support."(i)

"BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 is a multi-platform mobile solution that can securely manage and control an organisation’s mobile fleet, irrespective of device or platform," said Stephen Bates, Head of the Enterprise Business Unit at BlackBerry. "As more organisations are pressured to provide employees with various mobile device options, it becomes even more critical to have a simple-to-use EMM solution that can secure any device, including BlackBerry, iOS and Android."

BlackBerry has always provided security at the device, server and network level. The recently launched Secure Work Space solution leverages the same trusted behind-the-firewall connection available for BlackBerry smartphones and extends BlackBerry security capabilities for data-at-rest and data-in-transit to iOS and Android devices. The Secure Work Space container is managed through BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, making it easy and convenient to manage all devices from its single console.

With the added bonus of BlackBerry Balance technology on the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10 smartphones we have deployed, our employees can enjoy all the benefits of a cutting-edge smartphone while we can rest assured that all corporate information is kept completely separate and secure." – Neil Kirk, Head of Unified Communications, Europe, Hogg Robinson Group PLC

"BlackBerry has a long history as the mobile solution of choice for the broader public sector. The new BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 platform enables us to securely manage and control existing BlackBerry smartphones and the new BlackBerry 10 smartphones from one single console." – Paul Donnelly, Senior Network Administrator, NHS Education Scotland

    (i) According to a May 2013 report by Forrester Research, Inc. entitled: "Build A Road Map For Workforce Computing". Many enterprises are deploying bring-your-own-device (BYOD) programs to enable employees to use personal smartphones or tablets for work activities. In fact, 42% of IT hardware decision-makers have piloted, implemented, expanded, or upgraded BYOD programs for smartphones. In addition, 24% of these firms are in the same stages of implementing BYOD programs for tablets. Officially supporting these BYOD programs poses challenges for security and IT personnel tasked with managing corporate risk."

  • BlackBerry Confirms BBM for iPhone & Android Not Coming For At Least Another Week

    leaking-house

BlackBerry really screwed the pooch when it comes to their launch of BBM on iPhone and Android. This was supposed to be a hallmark week for BlackBerry bringing the BBM addiction to the masses and instead it has been a fiasco. First they paused the rollout and then delayed the launch for Android and then iPhone. Now Andrew Bocking, Head of BBM at BlackBerry, has once again blamed an unreleased older version of BBM for Android that leaked and "resulted in volumes of data traffic orders of magnitude higher than normal."

It seems like BlackBerry was really not ready for what seems like a predictable event (their Android app leaking). I assumed they would have a system to block the leak the second it came out due to the high probability of it happening. Sadly that does not seem to be the case. BlackBerry is still reeling from the leak that has sadly really screwed up what would have otherwise been a win for them. Damn shame if you ask me especially since they should have been ready for this completely predictable event.

    Check out the details below:

    Hi Android and iPhone users,

This is Andrew Bocking, head of BBM at BlackBerry. As a follow up to our first blog post on Saturday, I want to take a moment to provide you with an update on the rollout of BBM on Android and iPhone.

Last week, an unreleased, older version of the BBM for Android app was posted on numerous file sharing sites. We were aware of an issue with this unreleased version of the BBM for Android app. This older version resulted in volumes of data traffic orders of magnitude higher than normal for each active user and impacted the system in abnormal ways. The version we were planning to release on Saturday addressed these issues, however we could not block users of the unreleased version if we went ahead with the launch.

We attempted to address the problems caused by the unreleased version throughout the day on Saturday, but as active users of the unreleased app neared a million – and accelerated – it became clear that the only way to address the issue was to pause the rollout for both Android and iPhone.

The team is now focused on adjusting the system to completely block this unreleased version of the Android app when we go live with the official BBM for Android app. We are also making sure that the system is reinforced to handle this kind of scenario in the future. While this may sound like a simple task – it's not. This will take some time and I do not anticipate launching this week.

Thank you for your patience while we take the time needed to deliver the experience you expect from BBM. We will continue to provide you with updates here on InsideBlackBerry.com and through @BBM on Twitter. We will notify everyone who has pre-registered on BBM.com when BBM is available on Android and iPhone.

    Andrew Bocking
    EVP, BBM

  • What Does Fairfax Taking BlackBerry Private Mean For Consumers?

    Prem Watsa

After the absolutely brutal announcements this Friday and debacle of a cross platform BBM launch this weekend we now have BlackBerry pulling another rabbit out of the hat. A consortium lead by Fairfax Financial has put in a letter of intent to acquire all of BlackBerry for $4.7 billion or about $9 per share of the battered BlackBerry stock. The deal still has another 6 weeks to get finalized during due diligence with other suitors possibly making a bid but this seems the most likely route. This huge piece of news has many wondering what direction Fairfax Financial and Prem Watsa have in mind for BlackBerry in the future. The only idea we currently have is a cryptic message in the press release by Fairfax CEO Prem Watsa:

"We believe this transaction will open an exciting new private chapter for BlackBerry, its customers, carriers and employees. We can deliver immediate value to shareholders, while we continue the execution of a long-term strategy in a private company with a focus on delivering superior and secure enterprise solutions to BlackBerry customers around the world."

That seems to be a strong hint that BlackBerry's consumer focused days are coming to an end with a heavy focus on enterprise solutions. This means BES 10 and its cross platform MDM along with the enterprise BlackBerry 10 users. What will be very interesting is what Fairfax does with the other parts of BlackBerry. Most of BlackBerry's customers currently are consumers according to the last count I saw. On top of that BlackBerry is in the middle of some very consumer focused initiatives including cross platform BBM and new BlackBerry 10 devices like the consumer media friendly Z30. Will Fairfax possibly spin off the hardware and BBM platform pieces into separate entities?

Another interesting angle is what BlackBerry will do with their QNX acquisition and their heavy focus into car entertainment systems. QNX is the basis for BlackBerry 10 and that tight integration is the only reason we have BlackBerry 10 where it is today. If Fairfax spins off that piece then BlackBerry 10 as a platform may suffer even if they continue to license QNX. This really has me wondering what Prem Watsa has as a long term strategy for BlackBerry. Now that the company has chopped yet another 40% off their headcount they are contracting into what could be a laser focused company. The problem is that BlackBerry learned in the past that the consumer market is slowly taking over the enterprise market in a grassroots effort.

I think that Fairfax should double down on BlackBerry 10 and the combination of corporate and consumer market that appreciated the rock solid communication platform it offered. This means an end to the “me too” additions of features to BlackBerry 10 and instead appealing to the market that made BlackBerry take off. Right now the holes in the BlackBerry 10 platform are something that any hardcore BlackBerry user could point out to you within a few minutes. Going private may finally give BlackBerry that ability to refocus on its core values and actually deliver the product they should have delivered three years ago.

Let me know what you think Fairfax has in mind for BlackBerry if this deal goes through. It should be interesting to see if BlackBerry gets other offers.

PS: The conspiracy theorists are having a field day with the fact that BlackBerry announced their terrible preliminary results on Triple Witching Friday and then the fiasco of this weekend leading into a bid by insider Prem Watsa today.

  • Huge! BlackBerry Enters into Letter of Intent with Consortium led by Fairfax Financial

    BlackBerry Canada

Big news today. Check out the details below. Seems like this is pretty much a done deal for $9  a share at U.S. $4.7 billion.

BlackBerry Enters into Letter of Intent with Consortium led by Fairfax Financial
    - BlackBerry shareholders would receive U.S. $9 per share in cash

    - Transaction valued at approximately U.S. $4.7 billion

    - Consortium permitted 6 weeks to conduct due diligence

    - BlackBerry entitled to go-shop during due diligence period, subject to payment of a termination fee in the event alternative offer accepted
WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwired – Sept. 23, 2013) – BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSX:BB) today announced it has signed a letter of intent agreement (“LOI”) under which a consortium to be led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (“Fairfax”) has offered to acquire the company subject to due diligence.

The letter of intent contemplates a transaction in which BlackBerry shareholders would receive U.S. $9 in cash for each share of BlackBerry share they hold, in a transaction valued at approximately U.S. $4.7 billion. The consortium would acquire for cash all of the outstanding shares of BlackBerry not held by Fairfax. Fairfax, which owns approximately 10 percent of BlackBerry’s common shares, intends to contribute the shares of BlackBerry it currently holds into the transaction.

The BlackBerry Board of Directors, acting on the recommendation of a special committee of the board of directors (the “Special Committee”), approved the terms of the LOI under which the consortium, which is seeking financing from BofA Merrill Lynch and BMO Capital Markets, would acquire BlackBerry and take the company private subject to a number of conditions, including due diligence, negotiation and execution of a definitive agreement (the “Definitive Agreement”) and customary regulatory approvals.

The Special Committee, chaired by Director Tim Dattels, was formed in August 2013 to review strategic alternatives for the company. J.P. Morgan and Perella Weinberg are acting as financial advisors and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Torys LLP are acting as legal advisors.

Diligence is expected to be complete by November 4, 2013 (“Diligence Period”). The parties’ intention is to negotiate and execute a definitive transaction agreement by such date. During such period, BlackBerry is permitted to actively solicit, receive, evaluate and potentially enter into negotiations with parties that offer alternative proposals (“Alternative Transactions”).

If (A) during the Diligence Period (i) BlackBerry enters into any letter of intent or definitive agreement providing for an Alternative Transaction, (ii) BlackBerry ceases to negotiate with the consortium in good faith with a view to entering into the Definitive Agreement by the end of the Diligence Period, or (iii) an Alternative Transaction is publicly proposed or publicly announced and is consummated within 6 months following the end of the Diligence Period, or (B) during the 3 month period following the end of the Diligence Period, BlackBerry enters into any agreement providing for an Alternative Transaction with a person with whom discussions were held before or during the Diligence Period, then BlackBerry shall pay Fairfax a fee of U.S. $0.30 per BlackBerry share, provided, however, that no such fee shall be payable if the consortium shall have reduced the price offered below U.S. $9.00 per share without the approval of the board of directors of BlackBerry. In the event that a definitive agreement is signed with Fairfax the termination fee will increase to U.S. $ 0.50 per share.

Barbara Stymiest, Chair of BlackBerry’s Board of Directors, said: “The Special Committee is seeking the best available outcome for the Company’s constituents, including for shareholders. Importantly, the go-shop process provides an opportunity to determine if there are alternatives superior to the present proposal from the Fairfax consortium.”

Prem Watsa, Chairman and CEO of Fairfax, said: “We believe this transaction will open an exciting new private chapter for BlackBerry, its customers, carriers and employees. We can deliver immediate value to shareholders, while we continue the execution of a long-term strategy in a private company with a focus on delivering superior and secure enterprise solutions to BlackBerry customers around the world.”

In addition to the consortium and its lenders being satisfied with all aspects of the due diligence to be carried out by them during the Diligence Period and the negotiation and execution of a binding definitive agreement approved by the board of BlackBerry, completion of the transaction will be subject to other customary conditions, including receipt of required regulatory approvals. There can be no assurance that due diligence will be satisfactory, that financing will be obtained, that a definitive agreement will be entered into or that the transaction will be consummated.

BDT & Company, LLC, BofA Merrill Lynch and BMO Capital Markets are acting as financial advisors, and Shearman & Sterling LLP and McCarthy Tetrault LLP are acting as legal advisors to Fairfax in connection with the transaction.

  • CONTEST: MIME USA Ghost Glass for the BlackBerry Z10 Review and Giveaway!

DSCN1829When I first heard of a tempered glass screen protector, I was kinda worried.  How would a piece of glass on top of the regular screen look and feel?  I had always been a classic plastic film screen protector user.  Well, was I taken back by surprise.  The Ghost Glass screen protector for the BlackBerry Z10 is made of premium tempered glass, and I would say elevates the touch screen experience.  It went on really easy.  Because it was simply a piece of glass there was NO AIR BUBBLES.  It was a seamless install, MIME USA thought ahead.  They give you a piece of plastic film to to put on your screen first, that you peel off, removing all dust or lint that may be on the device.  Once on,there is no waiting. You can start using the device right away, and within 10 minutes I knew I was never going to be using a generic plastic film protector again.

The clean glass feeling, and the clarity of the screen shine through right away.  I have ‘accidentally’ dropped the device a few times and the glass did not chip or crack.  I also took a small screwdriver and repeatedly tapped the glass all over numerous times with varied degrees of strength, and the Ghost Glass didn’t even chip!  Now many of you might be thinking if it will increase the depth of the glass, or get in the way of the bezel gestures…. well it doesn’t.  The screen protector is less than 1 mm thick, and the edges are beveled, so it almost seamlessly blends in to the edges of the Z10.  The one thing that I did notice though, that some of my full protection cases fit a little too snug for my liking, because I swap batteries 2-3 times a day, I had to leave them off and go with classic soft case.

Now 3 weeks in to using the Ghost Glass on my Z10 I do have one little chip on the edge.  I was in a hurry and threw my pocket knife, keys, and Z10 in one pocket.  After running errands for a few hours, I pulled out the device and have the most minute chip off the edge.  It never spread or got worse.  It just really shows how much engineering goes in to the development of the glass.

I would recommend the Ghost Glass to anyone looking to get maximum coverage on their device.  MIME USA makes them for many different devices, and are reasonably priced.  They also have a really good lifetime  warranty, if you crack your glass simply send it back and purchase a new one at 40% MSRP.  Now it isn’t FREE, but still a 60% discount is great. Grab one for yourself today for low price of $24.95, and they are offering FREE shipping on all USA orders right now!

But WAIT, don’t feel like buying one? Tell us a story in the comments section where you wished you would have had the Ghost Glass on your device. We will pick the best one and send you a MIME USA Ghost Glass screen protector for your Z10!

Now you are wondering why no device pic? I was unable to capture the beauty of the screen protector in the lighting of my home with my point and shoot camera, so I just have pictures of the protector pre install.

    DSCN1830

Disclaimer:  Contest ends 31/10/2013, shipping is ground shipping anywhere in the world.  The decision of who wins will be decided by the BerryReview team, fabricated stories will be omitted. Please enter only once by sharing your story in the comments section.  Please remember to be REGISTERED so we can contact you if you are chosen.  Good luck to all!  The one you receive will be BRAND NEW and the package was only opened to take pictures for this post.

  • Still No Update from BlackBerry or @BBM on Cross Platform BBM Delay

    BBM Update

After BlackBerry salvaged a fiasco of a launch for cross platform BBM this weekend they promised to give us some updates on progress. We have readers constantly asking us about updates so I decided we should cover the latest lack of news. Sadly it has been almost 24 hours since the last update on Twitter and longer since their blog post about the delay. Until they cut off the rollout BlackBerry managed to rack up 1.1 million downloads from iPhone users and those who downloaded the leaked Android BBM file. Sadly even the iPhone version now seems to be running all wonky for those that have it.

This extended delay and lack of communication seems to point towards a fix coming later rather than sooner. Most of what I am hearing is pointing towards an issue on the BBM infrastructure side requiring more work than just a quick bug fix. BlackBerry is officially blaming a leaked version of BBM for Android but that might just be a cover story. Either way BlackBerry HAS to get the launch right this time so I hope they have EVERYONE working on making this relaunch go off without a hitch.

BlackBerry really needed a win with this launch and so far they do not seem to be actively doing damage control. I was hoping BlackBerry learned their lesson on lack of communication from their outages in the past.

  • USB Host Coming to BlackBerry Z30 With OS 10.2

    Clewley USB Host

It looks like the BlackBerry Z30 will be the first BlackBerry 10 device with USB host support. Current BlackBerry models can still connect to peripherals over USB but on the PlayBook and Z30 were given the correct hardware to allow you to plug USB drives like flash drives into the phone and view the files. This is a great way to add storage to a device but its a real shame that its not available on older devices due to them not having the right hardware.

What do you think about USB Host? Is it a critical feature?

  • Lower Priced BlackBerry 10 Device Will Slip Below the Q5 – Caught on Camera

    blackberry-kopi

I am not sure what to make of this latest leaked BlackBerry device. The BGR is hearing from a source that sent them a picture of an upcoming lower end device in the BlackBerry 10 model lineup codenamed Kopi. This model is set to be even cheaper than the Q5 and will have a faster processer but no LTE and will include a removable battery. I am not sure why BlackBerry wants so many devices when they finally simplified their lineup but hopefully someone has a plan. You would think they would just make the Q5 cheaper… If anything we needed a higher end flagship model than the Z30.

What do you think of this new model rumor?
