Automattic has updated their WordPress for BlackBerry smartphones app. The new version brings us to v1.6.5 which is a small jump from v1.6.3. They were kind enough to include a change log for the update which lists:
- Fixed an issue where stats could not be loaded on some Jetpack sites.
- The app now remembers the previously opened blog.
- Removed the support for the AtomPub protocol since it will be removed in WordPress 3.5.
- Performance and reliability improvements.
Kodos to Danilo for the continued hard work! You can find the update here in App World.

Переслать - RIM Acquired NewBay a Year Ago – Will It Power BlackBerry 10 Cloud Services?
One of RIM's acquisitions that I have been following closely is when they purchased NewBay in Ireland back in October 2011. @BB10VW pointed out on Twitter that RIM actually made the acquisition official on October 26th, 2011 which makes it almost 1 year to the day. When RIM announced the acquisition they said that "NewBay team will be bringing their expertise in cloud-based digital content services to the BlackBerry platform." We saw a small peek of what RIM may be doing with NewBay at BlackBerry World earlier this year but then there were rumors that RIM was considering selling off NewBay.
I am really curious to see what sort of cloud connectivity RIM adds to BlackBerry 10 since they have been mum on that front. Let us know what you think NewBay will power in BlackBerry 10 and what they have been working on for the last year.

Переслать - Halloween + BlackBerry = Awesome Pumpkin!
Yesterday we posted a list of apps RIM recommended for to get into the Halloween spirit and I thought I did a pretty good job with the accompanying image our writer Dave as the Joker. RIM's Carrier Product Manager, Scott Deckers (@ScottDeckers), clearly outdid me by replying with a pumpkin he created to combine his @BlackBerry and Halloween celebrations! Kudos Scott on some awesome work. I am sort of curious to see what you have planned for December…

Переслать - Free Light Bulbs Flow Puzzle Game for BlackBerry Smartphones
Eric introduced me to this latest hit game from Spice that I have been hooked on. It is called Light Bulbs and is dubbed as a Flow Game. In short it has you connecting the bulbs with the same color on the grid. There are 4 levels with 20 games in each level that are quite fun to play. On the other hand I do with the puzzles were a little more difficult.
Either way you can download Light Bulbs free in App World

Переслать - Devs: RIM Opens The Door for Building BlackBerry 10 WebWorks Directly from Github
While this will not change how most WebWorks developers work this is a nice step forward for RIM. They have promised to allow us to build WebWorks from Github for awhile now and they have come through as promised. This means if a developer sees a new update, improvement, or feature addition in the WebWorks source on Github they can simply pull down that branch and build it into their app.
If that sounds like something you are interested in I would recommend reading @nukulb's post about it on the DevBlog

Переслать - BlackBerry Desktop Software Works on Windows 8 – Enhanced Support Coming
I was waiting for some official word on this now that Windows 8 is coming out in a few days. RIM has put up a new knowledge base article today about support of BlackBerry Desktop Manager 7.1 on Windows 8. The good news is that BlackBerry Desktop Manager will function on Windows 8 BUT .NET Framework 3.5 must be installed (Available here) and enabled prior to the install. RIM also promises that a new release of BlackBerry Desktop software will be released in the coming weeks to "provide enhanced support for Windows 8 users."

Переслать - BlackBerry Print to Go Desktop Software Updated to v1.0.161
RIM has updated the desktop side of their popular PlayBook Print to Go app this week. The new update spotted by Nerdberry brings the desktop client to v1.0.161. We have been trying to find a change log but sadly there does not seem to be one. Let us know if you spot anything different. You can find the updated desktop Print to Go app here.
Personally I am really hoping RIM expands Print to Go in BlackBerry 10. It would also be slick if the printing worked both ways. What do you think?

Переслать - More Confirmation That BlackBerry 10 is Packing Bluetooth 4.0
RIM has already spelled out in the developer documentation and roadmap that BlackBerry 10 will have Bluetooth 4.0 but its nice to have more confirmation. Bla1ze noticed that a BlackBerry 10 device labeled "RFH121LW" has received official Bluetooth 4.0 certification from the Bluetooth SIG. The OS it was running for the test is a bit old at v10.0.9.341 which is older than the current Dev Alpha beta and the internal builds.

Переслать - Is RIM Really Serious About Licensing BlackBerry 10?
It's been interesting to watch RIM go through its transition to BB10. But one comment that always raises my eyebrow is all this talk about licensing BB10 to other OEM. Is RIM really serious about licensing BB10 to the likes of HTC, Samsung, or LG? Well, maybe but it's certainly not their primary goal.
Licensing to me is nothing more than a smoke screen for investors. Shareholders have seen their investment lose value over the last couple of years and RIM not only needed to market to consumers but also needed to market to shareholders. In order to do that you can’t be telling investors you’re not going to consider all available options to bring value back to their investments.
To me, licensing only becomes a real option if BB10 does fair as well as we all hope, I don’t believe that will be the case for RIM. Licensing BB10 would make the branding and marketing message extremely difficult for RIM. For years RIM has been known as a complete solution for companies and consumers, it controls its hardware and operating system. When this control is gone it creates problems for the brand and unlike Google, RIM’s in the smartphone business not advertising.
Licensing creates three major problems that are not good for RIM; reduced brand loyalty, increased competition, and fragmentation. The reduce brand loyalty is probably the biggest reason why I believe RIM has this as a last option. Like team BlackBerry? Well what team are you when HTC, Samsung, or LG are producing BB10. Is it team BB10 or team BlackBerry? I don’t know but it's a mess if it gets to that point. RIM needs to reduce competition and licensing does the exact opposite. Essentially, it would give other smartphone manufacturers another OS to delight consumers with while leaving RIM with only one option. As for fragmentation, just look at all the fun Android is having right now.
There's no doubt that licensing is a possible option for RIM, it's just not in the way everyone thinks. RIM wants to create new revenue streams and I think it's looking at QNX and the auto industry and other verticals for these licensing opportunities. At the end of the day licensing BB10 is like the talk of opening BBM to all platforms, sounds nice for consumers but ultimately it would be a bad business move.

Переслать - Apple Eats 7" of "Magical" Foot With Revolutionary iPad Mini
In case you have been hiding under a rock for the last few hours you probably have heard that Apple has announced a (insert superfluous adjectives) iPad Mini with a 7.9" screen. While Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, stated that this new device is "not just a smaller iPad" I find it hard to think of a single feature that does not fit that bill. This makes me wonder how this all fits in with Steve Jobs and his famous statements on why Apple will never make 7" tablets while it derided the 7" Android and upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablets. Thanks to The Register we have a transcript from the financial results conference call from October 2010. Here is what Jobs had to say:
Almost all [Android-based tablets] use 7-inch screens as opposed to iPads near 10-inch screen. Let’s start there.
One naturally thinks that a 7-inch screen would offer 70 per cent of the benefits of the 10-inch screen. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. The screen measurements are diagonal, so that a 7-inch screen is only 45 per cent as large as iPad’s 10-inch screen. You heard me right. Just 45 per cent as large.
If you take an iPad and hold it upright in portrait view and draw an imaginary horizontal line halfway down the screen, the screens on a 7-inch tablet are a bit smaller than the bottom half of the iPad’s display. The size isn’t sufficient to create great tablet apps, in our opinion.
While one could increase the resolution of the display to make up for some of the difference, it is meaningless unless your tablet also includes sandpaper so that the user can sand down their fingers to around one quarter of their present size.
Apple has done extensive user testing on touch interfaces over many years, and we really understand this stuff. There are clear limits of how close you can physically place elements on a touchscreen before users cannot reliably tap, flick, or pinch them. This one of the key reasons, we think, the 10-inch screen size is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps.
Or better yet:
The reason that we wouldn’t make a 7-inch tablet isn’t because we don’t want to hit a price point. It’s because we don’t think you can make a great tablet with a 7-inch screen. We think it’s too small to express the software that people want to put on these things. And we think – as a software driven company – we think about the software strategies first.
While Apple is famous for their reality distortion field I am loving how iOS lovers have backpedalled since the iPad Mini rumors started creeping up. Apple is essentially admitting to the world that they were wrong and there is actually a market for 7" devices. Hell Apple is going to make a killing selling millions of their iPad Mini's to their loyal fan base. This is not the first time Apple has backpedalled on their "extensive user testing" and I doubt it will be the last. Remember how the 3.5" iPhone screen was the largest size Apple would produce for cell phones because any larger and it would require 2 hands? Guess they were working on the iPhone 5's 4" screen when they said that.
While many of you may be wondering what the iPad Mini means for RIM I don't think it is a huge market changer. Apple essentially FOLLOWED the market to 7" devices instead of leading with their iPad Mini. What the iPad Mini has really done is raise the bar for build quality and for a $329 price point. Hopefully RIM comes packing with some of their own legendary engineering in BlackBerry 10.
PS: Thanks Ronen for inspiring this post along with "you know who" and his sanctimonious defense of iPad's being better because Steve Jobs said Apple would never make a 7" tablet…
PPS: Before some of you start to defend how the iPad Mini’s 7.9″ is different than 7″ lets just try not to split hairs

Переслать - Leaked Slides Show Off BlackBerry 10 Cinnamon & French Toast Notifications
We have seen previous slides showing off how RIM is planning on differentiating "Toasts" on BlackBerry 10. In case you don't know "Toasts" usually refer to simple notifications in a small popup that usually goes away. In BlackBerry 10 RIM is extending this idea to give more interactive access to notifications and dialog boxes. N4BB scored two slides showing off how RIM is implementing this on BlackBerry 10. The two different types of toasts and dialogs are Cinnamon Toast and French Toast.
Cinnamon Toast allows users to preview messages from the lock screen. It progressively discloses more information based on the angle you hold the device. So say the LED on your BlackBerry 10 device starts lighting up. You just pick up the phone and when you start tilting the device towards you it shows you the message. At 45 degrees you will see the full message preview of the header, subject and three rows of text.
French Toast on the other hand is to undo a delete operation. This slide describes a delete operation that does not require a confirmation but rather uses a "Toast" to offer an undelete option.
I know of a few other tweaks coming to the OS but hopefully we will get some more leaked slides describing them!
