This update brings some much needed refinements and inclusions and highly recommend checking out the release notes. This is really just another stop gap before the gold SDK's launch on December 11th, 2012. This update also includes support for installing the BlackBerry 10 IDE on Mac OSX, an update for the Visual Studio Plugin Beta, forward compatibility for BlackBerry WebWorks HTML5 apps along with sensor and orientation API's for WebWorks.

Переслать - RIM Renames BlackBerry App World to Just BlackBerry World
With the expanded capabilities of BlackBerry App World I was wondering what RIM was going to call it. We were already stretching the definition of Apps in App World and now RIM has addressed the issue by rebranding BlackBerry App World to simply BlackBerry World. This will include the music, videos, and possibly the other available content in
App WorldBlackBerry World. That might get a bit confusing with BlackBerry World still being RIM's flagship conference but I still like the name…If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha OS v10.0.9.1103 Update Released
For those lucky developers with BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha A or B devices here is some good news. RIM has released a new OS v10.0.9.1103 for the devices that brings some nice changes though a bit of lag that I don't like. This opens a bit of the BlackBerry Hub for developers to play with and brings the new UI icons and changes. There are also some improvements to BlackBerry App World which is now called BlackBerry World along with support for paying for apps.
Check it out by doing an OTA update or plugging your Dev Alpha into Desktop Manager. You can find the full release notes here or excerpted below:
- BlackBerry App World storefront has been re-branded as BlackBerry World
- BlackBerry World now supports payments for apps and games, and in-app payments
- BlackBerry Hub placeholder is now available
- When you turn on Development mode on the device, a notification is sent to the Hub and an indicator light flashes
- Various updates have been made to the look and feel of UI components and the standard size for application icons. For more information, see the UI guidelines

Переслать - Appcelerator Opens Early Release of Titanium Mobile for BlackBerry – Win a Dev Alpha!
RIM has mentioned that they are working with Appcelerator to bring their popular Titanium Mobile cross platform environment to the PlayBook and BlackBerry 10. Today's announcement from RIM and Appcelerator brings that one step closer to fruition. Appcelerator has made public the Github repository for the current preliminary build of Titanium Mobile for BlackBerry. They plan on having an official prerelease in December in prep for BlackBerry 10's launch. No word on a gold release.
Appcelerator and RIM have a promotion going for the first 1000 developers who port over their Titanium Mobile app to BlackBerry 10. Those first 1000 developers will receive one free year of Appcelerator Cloud Services and Analytics (worth $4500) along with a free BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha. You do not need to actually publish the app to make it available but rather only need to get your app draft in App World. I am sure RIM is doing this because they want to get Titanium developers on board as fast as possible even though the final version to iron out bugs may not be available.
Check out more details on Appcelerator's website here

Переслать - BlackBerry App Generator Gold Launches For Anyone to Easily Create Apps
RIM started opening the doors to the BlackBerry App Generator powered by Mippin earlier this year. The service was in beta and let you create apps for BlackBerry phones and PlayBook easily. Now RIM has announced that the BlackBerry App Generator has gone gold. This means anyone can create a BlackBerry 10, PlayBook, or BlackBerry OS 5/6/7 app through a simple web interface. You just need an RSS, Facebook page, Blog, online gallery, or anything with an RSS feed as content and Mippin handles the rest. You can also use the App Generator to make current App Generator Apps ready for BlackBerry 10. While RIM's announcement doesn't clearly state it the App Generator website says that:
Currently the App Generator builds dedicated apps for Blackberry OS5/OS6, OS7 and BlackBerry PlayBook™. BlackBerry® 10 support will be added in January 2013. Every app submitted prior to then will have a BlackBerry® 10 version added and published to App World™ automatically.

Переслать - StereoTube and Animated Weather HD On Sale! 33% Off!
Andrei Avram let us know that both of his apps for PlayBook are currently on sale. He has knocked 33% off the regular price so you can now pick up Stereotube and Animate Weather HD for $1.99 each! We have covered both of Andrei's apps before (StereoTube and Weather) and I can confidently recommend both as solid additions to your collection.
As you can see above, Andrei has paid attention to the details. Animated Weather HD looks awesome and it has everything you need right in front of you. A great feature is the ability to change the map type that is displayed on the right side. The default google map with weather overlay is great for checking current conditions if you're traveling. I also like the animated radar map which is useful for predicting precipitation. Yup, more snow on the way!
StereoTube is one of those apps I wish I had thought of. It fills a need for many people out there (like Ronen) who use YouTube to stream music. I honestly hadn't used YouTube for music much until I picked up StereoTube. The app is laid out very well and there is a tutorial when you first fire it up that walks you through the basics. I got a great start to my Christmas playlist for the many gatherings coming up in the next month. Any suggestions?
Andrei is deeply committed to BlackBerry and even delivered a presentation recently in Romania for Android and iOS developers about BB10 and his success story with Animated Weather HD. He's hoping to convince them of the the benefits of developing for BB10.
So go pick up Animated Weather and StereoTube from App World! They're priced very well at $1.99 and its a great way to support a fellow BB10Believer!
Andrei is working on what he calls a proper radio app for PlayBook. It is called Radio Player for SHOUTcast and will be available very soon. Sneak peek screenshots below.
Any thoughts or suggestions for Andrei? He is committed to supporting his apps and I'm sure he would welcome any feedback.

Переслать - BlackBerry 10 Mini Jam in Maribor Attended by 200 Developers
One of BlackBerrys long time quality theme and app developer Hedone Hawker let us know about a BlackBerry 10 Mini Jam they organized together with Branko Nikolić in Maribor, Slovenia on November 24th. RIM has been pushing events like these around the world and EMEA is a key focus point for them. This Mini Jam was attended by over 200 developers from all the Balkan countries which is impressive and they have more planned for Macedonia, Serbia and Croatia. I was not there myself but I thought it would be worth sharing Hedone's recap below. Let us know if you were there!
BLACKBERRY 10 MINI JAM – 24. NOVEMBER – MARIBOR / FERI
Developers show great interest and expectation of BB 10 evolutionThe BlackBerry 10 Mini Jam developer conference held by BlackBerry Developer Group Balkan at the Maribor Faculty Of Electrical Engineering And Computer Science was attended by more than 200 developers who only wanted to know one thing – how to develop excellent applications for the great new BlackBerry 10 platform as easy as possible and as soon as possible, and how to market them to the users.
The excellently organised event was first of its kind in the region and the organiser Branko Nikolić promised it was not the last. Until the end of the year the organisation will be active in Macedonia, Serbia and Croatia as well. The participants were shown all the mysteries of the new BB OS 10 by four specialists/evangelist of Research in Motion.
QNX: great fundament
Aaron Ardiri, Principal Developer Evangelist, first introduced the BlackBerry 10 Experience. He emphasized that BB always satisfied the needs of users who strive for top productivity, have great connections and love their networks, who are multitaskers – but most of all they always seek new ways to connect with others. For them the user experience trumps hardware specifications. These are the people that will love the new platform by RIM.Luca Filigheddu, highly experienced BlackBerry Developer Evangelist EMEA, Dennis Reumer, external developer and manager of developer group of Netherlands, and Lukasz Dzierzak, a student, blogger and BlackBerry WebWorks developer, BlackBerry Developer Evangelist, have explained extensively the approaches to develop applications and implement various concepts.
BlackBerry 10 will make use of the numerous newly acquired technologies (the most prominent is for sure QNX, the maker of the fundament for the new OS). The new BB OS 10 will offer an exceptionally HD-cinematic touch user experience where everything is smoothly animated. Great attention has been given to the power of content – RIM emphasizes that content is king at all times. It is because of the various content types and the connectivity that much effort has been put into the smooth operation of the system and applications, which are masterfully crafted with visual details. And the QNX is super by itself – that is why it is used in space missions also, where reliability and security are required without compromise.
The user interface is elegant and functional – in the applications the status and navigation bar have been removed, because all functionality and information is accessible through cascades, with gestures, at the command of users. A new peek gesture enables them to have a quick look into the communication centre where all messages are accessible so there is no need to check routinely various messaging and social applications.
Integrated, social, beautiful applications
Of course these charming details mean a lot to the daily user – the revolutionary simple alarm clock, calendar and other details will spoil even the most spoiled users. After all – the whole user interface for running applications and navigating the device is designed highly attractively. And there is the fresh breeze from the new virtual keyboard which enables the user to type whole words with a simple move of a finger. A small revolution is on its way from the photography department as well – users can choose the nicest smiles for all the faces in the photos, which are then smoothly merged into the photo.Aaron Ardiri went on to outline the anatomy of a typical BB 10 application. The apps should conform to the standards set as universal proportions for various devices, avoiding hardware specific code, and relative user interface setup and welcome/splash screens. RIM points out the quality of user experience which is sometimes even more important than the app functionality itself.
Aaron Ardiri paid special attention to the lifecycle of applications and pointed out basic app marketing principles. The advertisers who support the application expect greater ROI – therefore RIM includes a highly integrated advertising in the BB 10 platform for anybody who chooses to use it. He outlined what cannot be sold through applications (virtual moneys, physical goods and services) and has shown some real numbers. BB is active in 160 markets, supports 26 currencies, 90 % of 80 millions of users access app stores, monthly download 200 million copies of apps, which amounts to more than 2 billion up to date. There are almost 100.000 apps in the store at the moment.
Application and game development bonanza
Aaron Ardiri was thorough in presenting the new platform architecture. Applications and games can be developed in any of the following frameworks and SDKs – C++/Qt Cascades, HTML5 BlackBerry WebWorks, C/C++ native SDK, Adobe AIR ActionScript and Java Android Runtime. He outlined tools such as Cascades Builder, Ripple HTML5 Emulator and the Microsoft Visual Studio Plugin. The SDKs are accompanied by the web portal developer.blackberry.com where developers find all the necessary documentation, and the BlackBerry 10 Foundations framework enables development of integrated, social and beautiful apps for BB OS 10. The APIs and core functionalities make development a breeze. Much interest was given to the Android Runtime which enables the use of applications prepared for the Google Android OS.
Web technologies have a special place in the new BB 10 – the HTML5 compatibility testers gave the new browser 484 out of 500 available points, which makes it better even compared to the desktop browsers, and other mobile platforms got a score 280 and 360. jQuery mobile will help in providing excellent mobile web experience. The HTML5 browsing capability is important for providing a uniform mobile web application platforms to enable fast, cheaper and universal app development approach. Two faces of one device
New BB 10 devices will enable the users to switch between their corporate and personal/consumer profiles. This will not only bring benefits to them by changing the working environment, but also to the managers of ICT solutions in organisations – this way they will have better control of the working environment and management possibilities.VIP BlackBerry Party – the new approach
After the conference the BlackBerry VIP party was held at the renowned club PlusMinus. Fans and users of "blackberries" partied all night long to the music of the musical virtuoso DJ T-Jay, who used his PlayBook tablet and the Pacemaker app to run music into the system. The organisers of the event with Branko Nikolić at the forefront, took special care of rebranding the club and there were 20 tablets and 10 alpha BB 10 development devices given to the developers to make use of the new technologies that are yet to come on 30 January 2013. The next VIP BlackBerry party will be held in Belgrade, Serbia.

Переслать - Molome Shows Off Their Upcoming BlackBerry 10 Photo Sharing App
We already know that Instagram is coming to BlackBerry 10 but Molome has long been available to BlackBerry OS phones so I was curious where they stood. Molome let us know in September that they were working on a BlackBerry 10 version of their popular and free cross platform photo filter and sharing app. Now Nerdberry noticed that they have put up a picture of Molome working on a Dev Alpha. You can check out Molome on your BlackBerry phone now and it is reassuring that they are continuing on to BlackBerry 10. Переслать - Yacktman Mutual Fund Doubles Investment in RIM to 4.5% by Buying 12.2 Million Shares
We usually do not mention investments but this one is significant. Bloomberg broke the news this morning that Donald Yacktman, head of Yacktman Asset Management $19 Billion fund, doubled their investment in RIM this past quarter. They bought 12.2 million more shares bringing their stake in RIM to $252 million which is 4.5%. This makes them RIM's 5th largest investor after Prem Watsa, Mike Lazaridis, Jim Balsillie, and Primecap Management Co.
Check out the details over at Bloomberg. These large investors betting on RIM right before their financial announcements next month is interesting. Most predict that RIM will not announce great results for the past quarter since they will only be releasing new products in the following quarter. Either way it makes me wonder what Yacktman and Watsa know…

Переслать - Nokia Trying to Block Sale of BlackBerry Phones With Wi-Fi in the US
Every time I hear about these patent cases I cannot help but shake my head at how far the patent system has come from its purpose. The latest example was spotted by CIO.com where Nokia is petitioning a California court to enforce the terms of an arbitration award completed in Stockholm, Sweden. According to Nokia, RIM "is not entitled to manufacture or sell products compatible with the WLAN standard without first agreeing with Nokia on the royalty to be paid for its manufacture and/or sale of subscriber terminals compatible with such standards." In other words Nokia claims that RIM agreed to not sell any of their current phones or tablets.
This whole disagreement stems from a deal RIM made with Nokia in 2003 licensing Nokia's patents related to wireless devices. Nokia then performed a crafty move together with Sony creating a new company, MobileMedia Ideas LLC to manage certain patents from both companies. This MMI company then proceeded to sue RIM with Nokias patents. In the arbitration RIM argued that these patents were covered in previous agreement though the arbitration tribunal did not find in their favor.
CIO.com was kind enough to list the US patents that Nokia/MMI is suing over:
- 5,479,476, which covers user-adjustable modes for phones
- 5,845,219, which covers call alert during silent mode
- 6,049,796, which covers real-time search on a personal digital assistant
- 6,055,439, which covers a cellphone user interface
- 6,253,075, which covers call rejection
- 6,427,078, which covers a small, handheld workstation.
All of those seem like wireless patents to me still it blows my mind what companies can get patents for. We will let you know how this one plays out.

Переслать - See How Easy it is to Add Words to BlackBerry 10's Dictionary
I have seen quite a few demos of BlackBerry 10 already but the thing that I have been most excited about is when I see RIM starting to add their classic refinements. One of the things that first drew me to the BlackBerry OS was that things were thought out. For example, if you are in an email and hit the menu button it will default on "Reply" and if you hit it again on the next screen it will default to "Send." In short it is intuitive.
Dave pointed out this video spotted by nerdberry that shows how these refinements are coming to BlackBerry 10. This very short video below shows how you double tap on an unrecognized underlined word and you can easily add it to your dictionary or correct it.

Переслать - RIM Details BlackBerry 10 Qt Support Details for Developers
I have been refreshing some of my Qt knowledge now that BlackBerry 10 is close to launch. A few other Qt developers have reached out to us to try and get a feel of what it would take to make a Qt app on BlackBerry 10 and what this "Cascades" thing is. Eun-Kyung Choi and Kizito Kasengulu just published a really good resource for Qt developers that details what will and wont work with Qt on the PlayBook. For example, Qt on the PlayBook supports all of the standard Qt 4.8 API's except for QtWebKit for obvious reasons.
Well worth a read if you are working on a Qt project for BlackBerry 10 or are considering one. Check out it out at Writing Qt apps for the BlackBerry 10 platform. Also worth checking out is RIM's getting started guide for building your first game using the open source NME framework.

Переслать - BlackBerry Patagonia 9620 Going to Nextel Mexico Next Month
It looks like there is another BlackBerry 7.1 device in the pipeline for international markets. We have been seeing a UAProf listing for the BlackBerry 9620 for awhile but didn't know what it is. CrackBerry scored a spec sheet for the device headed for Nextel Mexico and you can find it listed on their website. Release is set for November and it seems like it is coming in as a low cost Curve device.

Переслать - Latest BlackBerry 10 London Photos Show Us A Bit More of What RIM is Building
The BlackBerry 10 London has not really bee camera shy but as it gets closer to launch we are seeing more and more refinements show up in the leaked images. TechSuplex (via CrackBerry) scored some pictures of a newer version of the OS with the new homescreen icons. We also see some refinements in the camera, browser, and more. I feel bad that the person who took the shots still has an AMD laptop but hey I am still jealous of them!
